In the past decade nationalism has been conceptualized as a cultural artifact, a product of invention and social engineering. Yet despite the flourishing interest in questions of national identity, we still have no theory explaining the reasons why nationalism presents itself in a manifold diversity of forms and aspirations. One way of . accounting for the malleability of modern nationalism is to approach it as a product of dialectical interactions between various national ideals. In this respect, the case of Romanian nationalism is particularly instructive. An exploration of the nature of intercultural communication and the use of English in international business correspondence is the principal aim of this study. Different aspects of intercultural communication in a sample of business correspondence consisting of letters, faxes and telexes in English written by business communicators from varied cultural backgrounds are investigated. These aspects include the deviation of linguistic features and expressions, the rhetorical structure of moves and steps with their linguistic exponents, the exchange structure of interaction and negotiation strategies, the organisation of message or information, and theme and theme structure. Error Treatment Strategies Used By Ns And Nns Esl Writing Teachers, Ruja Pholsward

The paper reports on an exploratory study of error treatment strategies used by NS and NNS ESL writing teachers at four Thai universities. In the study, the researcher investigated two important issues for ESL writing teachers: (a) how and to what extent they should tackle errors in students' work, and (b) how they can make their error treatment strategies sufficient to facilitate students' self-correction while not disparaging the latter with heavy marking or editing. The word 'cheewajit' is unfamiliar to many English language speaking people. As an ESL professor, a number of foreigners, as well as native speakers have asked me what this word means. Cheewajit has become a phenomenon such that one cannot be certain if cheewajit is a fad or faith. Hence, this paper will discuss some of the terminology used in the cheewajit philosophy to help clarify both to foreigners and Thais who would like a clearer understanding of these lexical items. Then they can decide for themselves if cheewajit is a fad or faith.

The number of HIV infections and cases of AIDS reported in the Pacific Island nations is growing steadily. Since many, if not all, of the risk factors for HIV infection are present in the Pacific, without change in behaviors that place people at risk of infection the potential exists for an HIV/AIDS epidemic. This article shows that such an epidemic would considerably increase mortality and slow but not reverse population growth in many Pacific Island countries. The small volcanic islands composing the northern half of the Mariana Archipelago have received little scholarly attention, a situation resulting from their difficult access and small size. Limited archaeological research suggests that these islands, now commonly referred to as the “Northern Islands,” were settled by at least a.d. 1300, and at the time of initial European contact in the early 1500s, all but two had sizable resident populations. During the early mission period, the Northern Islands were the last strongholds of traditional Chamorro culture until their residents were forcibly resettled into church villages on Saipan and Guam in the late …

This article analyzes the emergence in Tahiti of a body of theological and philosophical works written in Tahitian by Duro Raapoto, the leading intellectual of the Protestant Church and one of the best poets of French Polynesia. They constitute a new syncretic and millennialistic rewriting of Tahitian history as well as a rereading of anthropological ideas relative to pre-European society through a reinterpretation of some essential concepts of Polynesian culture. In this thesis, the author explores a novel way of formulating the otherwise old and tired trope of irony. Chapter one begins by examining some common literary critical views of irony. Wayne C. Booth conceives of irony mostly as a very finite operation--the author states something in such a way that the clever reader realizes the author in fact means the opposite of what he says. The reader, then, performs what Booth calls a "reconstruction," and once the reconstruction is finished, so is the irony's "effect." Paul Bove wants to replace irony with what he calls a "destructive poetics." Irony, …

There is an on-going concern among researchers and educators in both the ESL and EFL programs regarding how to balance a focus on form or linguistic properties with a focus on meaning or communication in the target language. A focus on form and a focus on meaning are not a dichotomy. Instead, based on a review of existing research literature and teaching experience, what seems to work best is an integrated teaching approach in which the development of language learners' grammatical knowledge and communicative competence are equally supported.
