This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1932, traces the revival of Catholic spirit in modern English poetry following its suppression after the Protestant Reformation. Lacaze argues that this revival began with the Oxford Movement of the nineteenth century and its leader, John Henry Newman, whose conversion to Catholicism and subsequent writing exercised a lasting influence on English literary and religious culture.

In this thesis the author has undertaken an intensive study of the several cases between 1916 and 1930 in which, serious opposition developed to the confirmation of Supreme Court appointments. Certain waxes when solidified in a strong electric field exhibit unusual electrical properties. Several days after formation there is a polarization in the direction of the field which seems to persist for an indefinite length of time. The surface that was in contact with the anode during formation first ass a negative charge and then obtains a positive charge, which under proper conditions is practically permanent. The surface that was in contact with the cathode first has a positive charge and then obtains a negative charge which is the permanent charge.

The genus Polygonum belongs to the family of plants, the Polygonaceae, which includes about forty genera and seven hundred and fifty species. About two hundred end seventy-five of these belong within Polygonum. Scientists have also found distinctly recognizable fossil Polygonums which date from prehistoric ages. Dr. F. H. Knowlton¹ of the U. S. National Museum has listed twelve species which have been found in fossil form. While studying collection of Colorado fossil plants in the Geological Tunes et Columbia College, Small discovered a remarkably distinct Polygonum belonging to the subgenus Persicaria.

The problem of' the Japanese in California has been prominent since the opening of the twentieth century. Much has been written in an attempt to help solve the problem. Yet the general trends of the writings prior to the Johnson Immigration Law of 1924 were to deal with the Japanese just coming into California rather than with those who were born here or had established permanent residence. Yet after the Immigration Law went into effect the problem of preventing undesirable Japanese from entering California became extinct. The study is organized chronologically across eight sections. The introduction defines key mathematical terms including calculus, variable, and limit, and situates the calculus as the most powerful instrument of mathematical investigation.
