During class discussions in the years 1932 and 1933 the questions were often advanced as to whether the common or elementary form of arithmetic as taught in American schools and expressed by the use of numerals was not stressed unduly, in view of its importance or influence on the future life of the student. It seemed to the writer that the answer to at least a part of this question might be found in a survey of the actual usage or occurrence of arithmetical forms as expressed in numerals.

About a hundred years after the appearance of Cartier, missionaries, traders and trappers began to see the possibilities of approaching the center of the continent by an entire water route. In 1679 LaSalle built the "Griffin" on Lake Erie and sailed as far as the Detroit River. Progress on the Great Lakes was hindered by the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution in the Eighteenth Century.

According to consensus of critical opinion, it was Schiller's ardent love of freedom which motivated practically all of his plays. In the actual world about him, in the society of his times, he found little that seemed to him to make for his ideal of inner harmony.
