Jacinto Benavente, known as the creator of the modern drama of Spain, has been the subject of controversial opinions. One reason may be that he has continued to write after his own manner and ideas despite the initial reception accorded him by Spanish critics and audiences. Another cause may conceivably be that his theatre differs strikingly in outward appearance from that of the Golden Age. A third reason is undoubtedly that Benavente has come to be popular with his own people after a patient struggle against their indignation, and he has been recognized as a writer of first importance.

It is not the purpose of this study to consider the influence of Don Quixote on World Literature in general, but rather to describe the imitations of Don Quixote in the works of three famous authors. These authors have each created a pair similar to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and each shows in his creation the influence of Cervantes' characters. These authors represent three different national literatures and three successive centuries. They are: Henry Fielding of eighteenth-century England; Alphonse Daudet of nineteenth-century France; and Jacinto Benavente of twentieth-century Spain. At the time of Pope’s birth and during the early Eighteenth Century, many anti-Catholic laws were put into practice. It was a period of liberal thought on religion and attacks on revelation were discussed in the tavern, coffee¬ house and drawing room of the day. Men of letters and men high in religious circles gave their views in a liberal way. A certain group turned to Deistic beliefs. They were not fanatics, opposed to Christianity, but liked the conceit of challenging their neo-philosophic views against revelation. The problem consists of an evaluation of tests of musical ability to discover which tests are most reliable and useful for elementary school purposes.

In a review of the literature related to the problem an attempt was made to present different viewpoints fairly, to summarize evidence of outstanding tests, to analyze contradictory evidences for possible solution of the questions involved, and to set up criteria for the selection of the best tests.

For further evidence, four selected batteries of comparatively new tests were given to over one thousand children in grades two to six in the schools of Parsons, Kansas. …
