During the 17nth and 18nth centuries in Germany Pietism and Rationalism had been opposing the principles founded in the Reformation, which demanded a separation from error. Thus for a long time the Lutherans had kept themselves separate from the errors of the Reformed. Yet thru Pietism, which stressed the outward life instead of doctrine, and thru Rationalism, which set human reason above the revelation of God, this principle of Lutheranism was being undermined, and the punch was being taken out of Lutheran orthodoxy.

It is to ascertain and set forth Kant's idea of the origin of evil, and then to trace its influence upon recent theology. The problem is complicated by the act that there are contradictory positions set forth by Kant in different ones of his works. The main purpose of this study is to present the political and social ideas which Benjamin Disraeli expressed through his fiction. His novels have been said to be a means whereby Disraeli clarified his ideas in his own mind before he attempted direct political or practical action. Since Disraeli was a statesman as well as a novelist, the question of whether or not, or to what extent, Disraeli's ideas were put into action is a more valid question, perhaps, than in the case of any other English author.

The association of the name of Francis Bacon with that of Niccolo Machiavelli is no novelty to the modern reader. But in most instances this association is brief and fleeting, possessed of a will-o'-the-wisp character that is at once unsatisfying and challenging. The natural conclusion to which one is tempted to leap is that Bacon, since he is the more recent in point of time, was influenced by the great Florentine in matters of philosophy and style.
