In he first half of the nineteenth century, a great revival in the study of the Scripture took place, wherein many minds were drawn to the study of prophecies and the second coming of Christ. In America, William Miller and his associates became the prominent exponents of Christ's eminent return. The artist, whether he was novelist, poet, painter or essayist, was caught in the maelstrom of violence and destruction that was World War I. Conscription was employed in most nations participating in the War and the artist, with his accurate, discerning eye and his sensitivity, was destined to report the War as he actually saw it unfold before him. A great part of the creative activity these artists engaged in was an analysis and reportage of the years from 1914, to 1918. Before the Armistice had been signed on November 11, 1918, Henri Barbusse had published his indictment of war, …

Milton's Religious Attitude In Samson Agonistes., Milton Gerald Miller

The criticism of Milton's Samson Agonistes has generally centered about interpretation of its autobiographical content and the interpretation of its classical form. The aim of this thesis is to show the relation of the inner, psychological form to the Puritan tradition. The biblical story from which Samson was derived, Judges 13-16, offers little to the scholar in understanding the psychological impetus of Samson. It is mainly a treatment of a pagan narrative demonstrating the snares inherent in trusting a woman with secrets. Samson finally regains his strength and pulls down the temple at Gaza and the narrative ends.

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development of autobiographical writing in Kentucky; to analyze the literary and philosophical characteristics of these works and, by this means, to divide these writings into several categories; and, finally, to reveal by an interpretation of these autobiographies, certain cultural aspects of Kentucky life and society. As thus stated, the intentions of this study are several; but, actually, all these aims are inseparably related part. of a single general problem which is to investigate Kentucky autobiographical writing as a whole in order to better understand the individual works in that literature.

The general purpose of this thesis is to determine the literary value of Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophel and Stella. First of all, an analysis of the sonnet cycle as such is undertaken to evaluate these lyrics with respect to the unity and logical development of theme. Secondly, a close study of the content material is proposed with the aim of reflecting the poet's ability to personalize and adapt conventionalized modes of expression and of portraying his excellence as a poet-courtier and literary craftsman. This study was made to preserve the story of the Joplin & Pittsburg Railway Company, a transportation pioneer in the Pittsburg, Kansas, district. The study begins with the founding of Pittsburg, cursorily discusses the coming of steam trunk lines, and treats of the electric lines which were merged in 1910 to form the Joplin & Pittsburg Railway Company. From this juncture the study deals with the progress of the line until its end in 1929. We have learned that the greatest difference between the Middle Ages and Renaissance times was the tremendous cultural upheaval that developed a rather complete change of attitudes and values. Life itself was the objective and not a mere preparation for another life. To the Medieval person the ego and the objective of living are idealized. One must enjoy everything. Much more importance was attached to physical existence. In this, the Renaissance contradicts flatly the attitude of the Middle Ages. The history of the port of Hull during the thirteenth century has presented a problem for historians in which has never been completely solved. This problem is centered around the traditional building of Hull in 1293 by Edward I. According to this tradition, Hull did not exist until this time. Evidence in the chronicle of the monastery of Meaux and those close and patent rolls, however, indicates that Hull was a port of some importance in the thirteenth century.
