A Study Of Two Early Theologians At Drew Theological Seminary: Randolph S. Foster And John Miley, Paul Gerhardt Hvidding May 1950

A Study Of Two Early Theologians At Drew Theological Seminary: Randolph S. Foster And John Miley, Paul Gerhardt Hvidding

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In all branches of learning there is a perennial need to check-up on material to determine if progress is being made and to note where a dead-end has been reached or actual retrogression has taken place. In no field is this check-up more necessary than in the field of theology and philosophy.

The problem of this study has been to determine if Arminian theology in America, as represented by two of her most influential theologians, has been true to the philosophy and theology of John Wesley and, also, to determine if they have advanced this thought in any significant manner. …

The Function Of The Minister In The Religious Education Program Of The Local Church, Lyman L. Myers May 1950

The Function Of The Minister In The Religious Education Program Of The Local Church, Lyman L. Myers

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Man today is pragmatically minded. The subject which relates itself to current human need is one which gains attention. The contemporary unrest of the world is a result of the uncertainty of religious faith. Man is striving to arrive at basic truths which will be acceptable to all men everywhere. However, there is abundant evidence that the solution of man's problems lies in his religious faith. The question is, how can religious faith be made real and active in the lives of people? How can it be so rooted that the monuments of skepticism, humanism and rationalism will not overthrow …

A Study Of The Relation Of Christian Conduct To Christian Experience In The Light Of Biblical Truth And Selected Biographical And Autobiographical Data, Kenneth K. Koth May 1950

A Study Of The Relation Of Christian Conduct To Christian Experience In The Light Of Biblical Truth And Selected Biographical And Autobiographical Data, Kenneth K. Koth

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Man's experiences of salvation, both the first experience (initial salvation) and the second experience (entire sanctification) are for the most part individual and personal. The manifestations of these personal experiences, however, are seen in one's conduct in relation to other people. Thus, it is through conduct that the reality of the personal experience is seen and known by others. Jesus affirmed this fact when he said: By their fruits ye shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. …

Humor In George Duhamel's Chroniques Des Pasquier, William Henry Adamson May 1950

Humor In George Duhamel's Chroniques Des Pasquier, William Henry Adamson

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the nature and extent of the humor in Georges Duhamel's ten-volume saga, "Chroniques des Pasquier," and to offer a suggested classification of it. There is no intent to make detailed comparisons with other works, or to attempt to fit the present analysis into any aesthetic or philosophical system other than the relatively simple classification into which the subject seemed rather naturally to divide itself, the writer disclaiming any pretension to the technical knowledge necessary to any of numerous other modes of inquiry. It was thought best to limit the study to this …

The Theme Of Ecclesiastes, Frederick W. Danker

Bachelor of Divinity

A brief survey of the critical methods employed by interpreters of the book of Ecclesiastes from the time of the compilers of the Midrashim down to the present day reveals that theological orientation and intellectual disciplines have largely determined the evaluation and interpretation of the book either in its parts or as a whole.

Washington Ellsworth Lindsey, Third Governor Of New Mexico, Ira C. Ihde Apr 1950

Washington Ellsworth Lindsey, Third Governor Of New Mexico, Ira C. Ihde

Washington Ellsworth Lindsey exemplified the spirit of a pioneering and progressive family. The third governor of the state of New Mexico was born on December 20, 1862, near Armstrong Mills in Belmont County, Ohio. His great grandfather, Robert Lindsey, was the founder of the family in America. Emigrating from Scotland before the American Revolution, this Scotsman settled first in New England, and later he moved to Maryland and then to Virginia. The Public Campaign Of The 1949 Virginia Democratic Gubernatorial Primary, William O. Hester Apr 1950

The Public Campaign Of The 1949 Virginia Democratic Gubernatorial Primary, William O. Hester

Master's Theses

That the South possesses a one-party system of choosing its state and national representatives is an axiom of Anericnn politics . On only three occasions since 1880 have Southern presidential electors cast their votes for any nominee other than that of the Democratic Party. On only four occasions in this period has a Governor of a Southern State been elected on any but a Democratic ticket. This record is convincing testimony that in the States of the late Confederacy the nominees of the Democratic Party are in reality the only candidates having any probability of election.

It would therefore behoove …

From Limbo To The World Of Light : An Examination Of The Novels Of Aldous Huxley, Walter A. Bass Apr 1950

From Limbo To The World Of Light : An Examination Of The Novels Of Aldous Huxley, Walter A. Bass

Master's Theses

The line between literature and philosophy is not sharply defined, and it is never quite certain where one leaves off end the other begins. It is possible to avoid the problem altogether, if it is a problem. The Critique of Pure Reason is convincing proof that literary considerations may be avoided entirely in philosophic writing. Poe championed the other extreme, but the isolation of literature has not often been successful, and on the whole, it is perhaps justifiable to claim that literature must be a criticism of life; that is, it must have philosophic content.

From the critical point of …

Changing Conception Of Sir Gawain In Medieval Chronicles And Romances, Clyde Kathleen Pearce Mar 1950

Changing Conception Of Sir Gawain In Medieval Chronicles And Romances, Clyde Kathleen Pearce

English Language and Literature ETDs

As the title of this thesis indicates, the Gawain Cycle is the subject I have chosen for discussion in the following pages. I feel justified in having chosen this problem, and also in the manner of presenting it, on the grounds that no detailed and integrated survey of the problem has been made.

A Study Of The Influence Of A Church School Upon Its Youth, Esther Jane Deweerd Jan 1950

A Study Of The Influence Of A Church School Upon Its Youth, Esther Jane Deweerd

Masters Theses

First Paragraph:

There is a growing need for more effective religious training for youth today. Educators recognize this and articles appearing in our magazine and papers sense it too. Studies and research into what the young people themselves feel also indicates that they recognize this lack in their training. The problem is receiving much thought and study by educators, church workers, and legislators alike, and valuable suggestions appear in these same periodicals, showing us ways of meeting this need. A few examples will show us what they are saying.

A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson Jan 1950

A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many events of the gold rush have been adequately narrated in numerous books and articles. The succeeding pages in this thesis will recall, historically by topic, important incidents of one phase of that period never before treated as a separate study that phase is the theatre of the Mother Lode region.

The argonauts of the Mother Lode wanted to be entertained and could pay for it. Many preferred the saloon and gamboling hall, but the theatre did not languish because of this, and in fact, developed in some instances directly out of the saloons and fandango halls.

It was the …

By studying his life the growth of his individualistic approach to everything and his reasons for not conforming to the pattern established by tradition will be traced.

A Critique In The Field Of Certain Problems Involved In Relating Missions To The Church, Martin Bailey Clark

Graduate Thesis Collection

Since the beginning of the twentieth century missionary leaders have become aware of the national church as the focal point of their difficulties. The church on the mission field is a victory in itself, but with it comes an awareness of problems both new and old. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss and analyze these problems and draw certain conclusions. The procedure will follow this outline: (1) Definition (2) The Problems Involved (3) Origin of the Problems (4) Efforts Toward Resolution of the Problems.

The College Of The Pacific Seal In Pebble Mosaic, Elaine Brink Stanley Jan 1950

The College Of The Pacific Seal In Pebble Mosaic, Elaine Brink Stanley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Abstract not provided. The following is the introduction.

It has been agreed that a work of art is to augment the usual written thesis and be considered the greater part of the thesis in meeting the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. This paper is submitted as an auxiliary factor--not as the thesis itself. It is understood that the basis of judgment shall rest upon the acceptability of the art work, in this case the College of the Pacific Seal in Pebble Mosaic as seen and as described in this paper. This paper provides a record of the …

A Critical Approach To Homiletic Literature, Winthrop H. Richardson Jan 1950

A Critical Approach To Homiletic Literature, Winthrop H. Richardson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A critical study of the literary values contained in homiletic writing demands at the outset a careful consideration of what differentiates literature from mere language. Following a line of distinction made by Professor Albert Guerard of Stanford, literature may be defined from two points of view: technique and intention.

A more exalted concept is furnished by the philosophy of James Russell Lowell, as it has been paraphrased by Norman Foerster: “Literature is the ideal representation of human nature…”

Recognizing the fact that literature involves “overtones of the soul” (Guerard), or “spiritual imagination” (Foerster), we are forced to depart from the …

An Analysis Of Romain Rolland, Mildred Lagomarsino Jan 1950

An Analysis Of Romain Rolland, Mildred Lagomarsino

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The first fifty years of Romain Rolland’s life were spent in inconspicuous and almost solitary labors. From then on this name became a storm center of European discussion

The significance of his life’s work becomes plain only when it is contemplated as a whole. It was slowly produced, for it had to encounter great dangers; it was a gradual revelation, tardily consummated. The foundations of this splendid structure were deeply dug in the firm ground of knowledge, and were laid upon the hidden masonry of years spent in isolation. Owing to the strength of its foundations, to the solidity of …

The Presidential Campaign Of 1948, Edward John Hallauer Jan 1950

The Presidential Campaign Of 1948, Edward John Hallauer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the sprint of 1948, President Harry S. Truman's chances of being re-elected to the presidency of the United States seemed very dubious. It was uncertain that he would even secure the Democratic nomination for that office.

Truman's pre-convention Western trip. In the early summer of 1948 President Truman left the Capitol on a supposedly non-political Western trip. Although his aids insisted the journey was to be non-political, the fiction deceived no one. However, it enabled the President to charge off the cost of the excursion to his $30,000 a year travel allowance instead of sending the bill to a …

Value In An Age Of Crisis, W H. Werkmeister Jan 1950

Value In An Age Of Crisis, W H. Werkmeister

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

On June 28, 1914, the Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated at Sarajevo. Less than five weeks after his death, the century of peace, which had been interrupted by only eighteen months of open warfare involving major European powers, came abruptly to an end. The searing flames of World War I engulfed the whole of Europe and burned away the last shreds of that complacency which had veiled for all but a few malcontents the forces of die integration which threatened the very existence of Western culture. The October Revolution in Russia, the political and economic collapse of Central Europe, …
