A Graphic Interpretation Of Four Pueblo Indian Corn Dances, Robert L. Smith Aug 1950

A Graphic Interpretation Of Four Pueblo Indian Corn Dances, Robert L. Smith

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to supplement what the author has already attempted to express in terms of paint. Therein he gives a personal interpretation of four Pueblo Indian Corn Dances; here he presents such factual data and explanation as he feels pertinent to his emotional appreciation of the dances. It is perhaps equally important to state not only what is the intent in this paper but also what is not intended. The writer does not attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of the subject-- geographical, ethnological, or archaeological. As any student of Indian culture knows it would be …

Character Portrayal In The Works Of Miguel De Unamuno, Barbara Brooks Aug 1950

Character Portrayal In The Works Of Miguel De Unamuno, Barbara Brooks

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Unamuno, therefore, had a twofold purpose in writing novels. He wanted to delve into the soul of the person to find out what struggle caused his personality, and then he wanted to see how this struggle effected the individual's attitude towards death and eternal life.

The purpose of this study is to see how well Unamuno succeeded in carrying out these two central themes, first, intimately, in his own character; second, remotely, in the character of his reader; and third, creatively, in the characters of his novels.

The University Of Richmond And Her War Effort, 1939-1945, Robert Richard Shotzberger Aug 1950

The University Of Richmond And Her War Effort, 1939-1945, Robert Richard Shotzberger

Master's Theses

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese made their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and the United States was at war. This marked the second time within a quarter of a century, and the fifth time in the history of the University, that war clouds hovered over the United States. During World War I, the University vacated its new campus (the present site) in favor of the United States War Department. The campus and all of the buildings were used for hospital purposes. Thousands of soldiers, wounded on the Western Front, were hospitalized in the buildings on the new campus. These …

Hezekiah Niles And The British, 1811-1815, Marian V. Cochran Jul 1950

Hezekiah Niles And The British, 1811-1815, Marian V. Cochran

History ETDs

Hezekiah Niles was born in 1777 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where his parents had fled for safety before the Battle of Brandywine. After the period of danger passed, the Niles family once more took up their residence in Wilmington, Delaware. Niles spent his boyhood days here and apparently received most of his education in the Friends School. The fact that his father had been disowned by the Quaker congregation casts some doubt upon the place of the youth's education. His course of study was typical of the best in that time -- a thorough knowledge of the "three R's" and …

The Sod House In Western Kansas, Isabelle Q. Neyer Jul 1950

The Sod House In Western Kansas, Isabelle Q. Neyer

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purposes of this study are to show the importance of the sod house in the settlement of the High Plains Region of Western Kansas and how the early settlers adapted themselves to a changed environment and used the materials at hand to supply their everyday needs. Some of the events concerning the settlement of the country exist, mostly, in the memories of the old settlers. Among these are the construction of the sod buildings, and the purposes for which they were used. It is important that the knowledge of this form of architecture should be written down while men …

A History Of The Cattle Pools In Barber County, Kansas, Charles C. Forsyth Jul 1950

A History Of The Cattle Pools In Barber County, Kansas, Charles C. Forsyth

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

For a period during and following the Civil War there was a great demand for beef in the United States and in Europe. The building of the railroads across the nation was of great value in the transportation of cattle to meet this demand. From Texas the cattlemen began to make the long drive to the nearest rail head. Much has been written about the so called "cow towns" of Kansas and the part they played in the development of the state, but a point that has been overlooked for the most part is the association of cattlemen into groups …

An Evaluation And Interpretation Of The Principal Characters In The Novels Of W. Somerset Maugham, Leo L. Van Scoyc Jul 1950

An Evaluation And Interpretation Of The Principal Characters In The Novels Of W. Somerset Maugham, Leo L. Van Scoyc

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of this study is to appraise, or evaluate, the ability of a popular modern writer, W. Somerset Maugham., to develop fictional characters. Some critics of his novels have questioned Maugham's skill of character development, but have stated few reasons for their conclusions. When we consider that Maugham has been, and continues to be, one of the leading popular writers of our time, some conclusions regarding the development of his characters seem in order. This study of character development involves an interpretation of the beliefs and personalities of the types of people presented in his novels. This interpretation is …
