Historical Analysis Of The German American Singing Societies In California, With An Evaluation, Anton Hubert Dorndorf Jan 1955

Historical Analysis Of The German American Singing Societies In California, With An Evaluation, Anton Hubert Dorndorf

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Throughout Germany the singing society (usually a Maennerchor), is an important institution in the cultural life of every, hamlet, town, and city. During the middle of the nineteenth century, many such societies sprang up throughout America. California had a liberal share of these during the pioneer days. Some of these organizations have persisted until the present day. The function which they performed in enriching the lives of their members, and the contribution which they made to the life of the community seems to the investigator a valid reason for investigation into their background and history.

As far as the investigator …

Metaphysic And Distorted Analogies, Pierre Grimes Jan 1955

Metaphysic And Distorted Analogies, Pierre Grimes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A philosophical analysis of the thesis of the metaphysic of the non-dual that "the world we are confronted with is nothing but words, words, words" is a difficult one upon which to embark. The difficulty does not lie in assuming this argument, but in examining it from the opponent's position. It is equivalent to an evaluation of the New York Giants in Brooklyn. If we assume the thesis of the metaphysic of the non-dual, finding the proper arguments and quotations to substantiate its claims, all that we would be doing is claiming a victory for "our side” when, indeed, no …

Svabhava In The Philosophy Of Zen Buddhism, Frances Wesely Milller Jan 1955

Svabhava In The Philosophy Of Zen Buddhism, Frances Wesely Milller

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

When the Zen master asks, "who are you?" a reply as to your name, age, and place of residence would be out of order. The proper answer might be silence. But if silence were consciously resorted to in contrast to sound, this would still be no answer. In fact, the only acceptable answer would lie in your merely being what you are at that very moment, without a second, or reflective, thought. And this amounts to being what you have always been and always will be. The question has to do with your "original nature," that which you were before …

Sound Reproduction In The Field Of Music : A Survey And Analysis, Arthur John Holton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an attempt to make use of as much technical knowledge as seems pertinent to a musician attempting to reproduce music with the utmost of realism and faithfulness to the original sound. The experiments and research that have gone into this thesis cover the years between 1940 and 1955, a period involving a world war and its many technical advancements, including the now commercially practical wire and tape recorders and the first laboratory development of a completely electronic recorder which has no moving parts and uses a film recording that can be reproduced as easily as a large …

A Pre-Elementary Method For Cornet And Clarinet, James Croft Jan 1955

A Pre-Elementary Method For Cornet And Clarinet, James Croft

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Instrumental music teachers are always searching for a published instructional method that satisfies all the criteria they seek to find in the perfect method. However, no one method can satisfy everyone. Each teacher supplements, with his own ideas, the method which he has found to be the most satisfactory. The author's experience indicated that the greatest amount of supplementing had to be done with the beginning pupils in the elementary grades.

The Political Thought Of José María Luis Mora, 1794-1850, Morris L. Simon Sep 1954

The Political Thought Of José María Luis Mora, 1794-1850, Morris L. Simon

Latin American Studies ETDs

This work undertakes a study of some aspects of the thought of one man, Doctor José María Luis Mora, a Mexican liberal of the nineteenth century. Naturally, selection by the writer has narrowed considerably the scope of this study. Two factors have conditioned the choice of material from Dr. Mora's breadbasket of ideas: (1) its relevancy to the Mexico of Mora's day, and (2) its value in revealing Mora as a political thinker.
