The Changing Status Of Women In The Philippines, Soledad Oriel Soriano
The Changing Status Of Women In The Philippines, Soledad Oriel Soriano
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Among many peoples in the Far East, masuline domination has been flagrantly exhibited. Women have been, until lately, relegated to the background in social, economic, and political affairs. By their customs, traditions, and laws, most women have been held in utter subjection to the men.
That women in the Philippines are on an equal footing with the men socially, economically, and politically would seem incredible to people in the Wast who grow up with the conception that Oriental women lead secluded and downtrodden lives and are generally slaves to the man. In their opinion, the Philippines, being in the Far …

A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen
A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen
Theses and Dissertations
An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.
From outside of the church criticisms have arisen concerning certain changes, additions, and omissions made in the revelations as first written by Joseph Smith. When confronted …
The Juarez Stake Academy, Dale M. Valentine
The Juarez Stake Academy, Dale M. Valentine
Theses and Dissertations
While the history of the Latter-day Saints who colonized in Mexico is probably not generally known by the majority of Latter-day Saints living throughout the world today, it nevertheless comprises an exceptionally colorful and exciting chapter of the history of Mormonism. The Latter-day Saints who went to Mexico created there a culture and society which has never been duplicated. Probably one of the chief concerns of the Mormon Colonists in Mexico was to establish in their society a culture which would be lastingly enduring and which would progressively improve. Secondly, it is also probable that they were passionately desirous of …
The Origin And History Of The Fast Day In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, A. Dean Wengreen
The Origin And History Of The Fast Day In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, A. Dean Wengreen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is two fold: first, to review the historical sources pertaining to the observance of fasting from the time of the establishment of the church in 1830 until 1896, when the last essential change in its observance occurred; and second, as the payment of fast offerings is so closely related to an analysis of the subject, to trace its development out of the Church's policy to provide for its poor.
Mormon-Indian Relations As Viewed Through The Walker War, H. Bartley Heiner
Mormon-Indian Relations As Viewed Through The Walker War, H. Bartley Heiner
Theses and Dissertations
Early Utah history involved many adjustments of differences between the pioneers and the Indians. This thesis is a study of the differences and of the policies adopted to alleviate them, particularly in the background, setting, and events of the Walker War.
The Mormons came into a territory inhabited by the aggressive Ute Indians. However, the niggardness of nature and the white man's oppression had reduced them to a condition of destitution. They had descended to trading, begging, and stealing. Possibly, with the idea of exploiting the Mormons, the Indians invited them to settle in various sections of the territory. The …

Abraham Owen Smoot: Pioneer Mormon Leader, C. Elliott Berlin

The origin of the Smoot family is traced to thirteenth century Holland when a vassal of the Count of Holland chose the name Smout. The family, after conspicuous service, entered the ranks of the nobility and gained a coat of arms. William Smoot contracted to perform fifty days service in the Colony of Virginia in 1633. Impressed by the new land, he settled in America.

A Study And Evaluation Of The Textbooks Used In Typewriting And Junior Business Training, Alice H. Harbers
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
he progress of man through the ages has been definitely marked by the various means he has employed in putting his thoughts into visible form. There are defnite milestones in the progress of the written word. History teaches us of the early Babylonian scripts, the strange and unusual characters of the Egyptians, and the writing of other ancient people. After the first early writings of stone carvings came the ancient development of papyrus in Egypt, the wax tables and atylus of the Romans, and the parchment of the Middle Ages. Then in the early days of that wondrous new era …
A Rhetorical Criticism Of The Campaign Speeches Of Adlai E. Stevenson, Max C. Norton
A Rhetorical Criticism Of The Campaign Speeches Of Adlai E. Stevenson, Max C. Norton
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The 1952 Presidential campaign ushered into national prominence the Democratic nominee, Adlai Ewing Stevenson.
His sudden and dramatic emergence as an important factor in world politics was due in part to his unique oratory. Dynamic in style and content, his speeches commanded the rapt attention of the American people for three intense months during which he delivered over two hundred and fifty. Of interest and importance is the new insight into national problems that he gave to the American voter as a result of these orations.
The problem is to analyze, through his public addresses before and during the 1952 …

Grace And Legalism In The Pauline Writings, Clarence A. Stanke
Graduate Thesis Collection
Therefore, our procedure will be to examine the various Pauline writings to determine Paul's advocacy of grace and the implications of this in three areas. We will introduce our study with an examination of the background for the problem of Jewish legalism in the early church. This will include a brief appraisal of the constituency of the early church, expansion to the Gentiles, Paul's missionary labors and resultant opposition from the Judaistic party, and a brief preliminary view of Paul's effort to deal with this problem.

Catholic Church And Catholic Figures In Novels Of The Southwest From 1850-1950, Brother Francis Gremillion F.S.C.
Catholic Church And Catholic Figures In Novels Of The Southwest From 1850-1950, Brother Francis Gremillion F.S.C.
History ETDs
Acknowledging [the Southwest's] Catholic heritage, all artists who portrayed this land could not fail to show the influence and importance of the Catholic Church. In search of a subject for this thesis, my curiosity was aroused to find out just how the Church was portrayed in the fiction of the Southwest; no such study had been done before on that subject. Upon investigation, another point of interest developed: of all of the fiction writers studied for that particular area, only Paul Horgan is Catholic. Hence, it was of great interest of the writer of this monograph to discover how the …

The Popularity And Influence Of Shakespeare's English And Roman Historical Plays In America From The Beginnings To 1950, Ruth Warren
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Poetry and romance in Shakespeare's non-historical plays have come into their own again with revivals of The Tempest directed by Margaret Webster and with the production of As You Like It, which features Katherine Hepburn. Unfortunately, the time limit of this paper has been set for the end of 1950, so it is only possible to mentin in passing Laurence Oliver's and Vivian Leigh's exciting and unique idea of presenting Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra on alternate nights. In spite of early curtains, which make it necessary for the theatre-goer to eat his dinner in a …

A History Of The E.B. Crocker Art Gallery And Its Founders, Donald Clyde Ball
A History Of The E.B. Crocker Art Gallery And Its Founders, Donald Clyde Ball
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The E. B. Crocker Art Gallery of Sacramento is the oldest public art museum in the West. The author of this study, a Sacramentan, has long been interested in the history of this institution, how was the collection assembled? What is its value? How did it come to Sacramento? What is the nature of the California museum Association which is the custodian of the collection, This paper is an attempt to answer these questions. The answers are not as complete as the author might wish, but they are as complete as extant records and accounts allow. This study provides a …
A Study Of The Four Roman Sketches Of Charles T. Griffes, John Louis Hoberg
A Study Of The Four Roman Sketches Of Charles T. Griffes, John Louis Hoberg
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Charles Tomlinson Griffes becomes a remarkable figure in American music when one considers the musical influences which surrounded him. The first of these influences, and the one of longest tenure, was that of his piano teacher, a Miss Mary Selena Broughton. An eccentric woman and, considering the times, an extremely unorthodox teacher, she instructed Griffes in piano for twelve years. In addition to giving him thorough technical training and sound musicianship, she allowed his imagination free rein. This freedom of expression was to be the biggest factor in the next and last phase of his musical training - the four …
