An Analysis Of Sovereignty And Its Application To Segregation In Public Schools, Patricia Minor Murphy

Master's Theses

Division of authority between the national goverment and the state governments has been a problem since the origin of the United States and this problem is especially prominent today in so far as it concerns the public schools. In the present situation, both constitutional and emotional difficulties are concerned; for this reason, history, constitutional analysis, and recent developments in trends of thought are all essential parts of a discussion concerning the present problem of segregation in public schools.

Almost three years ago, the Supreme Court rendered its decision in the Segregation Cases, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), in which it held …

An Analysis And Evaluation Of “Heart Of Darkness”, Robert James Dalziel Jan 1957

An Analysis And Evaluation Of “Heart Of Darkness”, Robert James Dalziel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Al though a major part of this thesis is devoted to the analysis and evaluation of a particular work of narrative literature, it is obvious that such an analysis presupposes the existence of a general theory of literature. A critic's theory of literature determines, to some extent, the kind of criteria he may use to evaluate a particular work. In addition, the theory of literature held by the critic may have a direct influence upon his system of analysis. For these reasons, Chapter II has been given over to an elucidation of this writer's views about the nature and function …

The Life And Teaching Of Lin-Chi I-Shuan, Kazumitsu W. Kato

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the tradition of the Zen school, all of the monks are required to study what are called the "seven books of Zen. These books are chosen from the old Zen masters' collections, but the "seven books" are different according to each of the schools of Zen. Therefore, it is not possible to say which are "the seven books," but Lin-chi Lu is always listed as the first one of them in every school of Zen.

Utah Mail Service Before The Coming Of The Railroad, 1869, Ralph L. Mcbride Jan 1957

Utah Mail Service Before The Coming Of The Railroad, 1869, Ralph L. Mcbride

Theses and Dissertations

After making a study of the pre-railroad Utah mail service, I have found it appropriate to categorize certain broad elements. This thesis is divided into eight parts, each part following in chronological order except for the one dealing with the Pony Express and the telegraph. Which covers approximately the same period of time as the chapter entitled "Resumption of the Mail." Though there was a most definite overlapping of time for these two historical phases, it would seem that there was adequate justification for making two chapters.
The initial chapter in this thesis pertains to the unofficial mail, beginning in …

Music History Of The Salt Lake Theatre, The Formative Years: 1862-1870, Alfred S. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to bring to light as much of the music as possible, all the performers that could be recorded, and sufficient audience reaction to indicate the musical preferences of the area in order to provide an accurate, detailed account of the early years in the Salt Lake Theatre, 1862 - 1870. There was also the desire to present these things in such a way that they would be reliable, factual, complete, and still, if possible, interesting. An attempt was made to capture the spirit of the times, to make the characters "live," to transport the …

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace Jan 1957

A Study Of The Speaking Of B. H. Roberts, Utah's Blacksmith Orator, R. Wayne Pace

Theses and Dissertations

The Mormon Church has continued to grow in size and prominence since 1830 when Joseph Smith announced the formation of this new Christian organization.

The struggle to gain recognition for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) among the body of Christian groups has been a vigorous and energetic one. Out of the band of closely knit followers have developed leaders who were particularly gifted at proclaiming and defending the beliefs of this faith.

One of the men who was foremost in advancing the views of the Mormon people during the years 1880 to 1930 was Brigham Henry …

An Early History Of Milford Up To Its Incorporation As A Town, George A. Horton Jr. Jan 1957

An Early History Of Milford Up To Its Incorporation As A Town, George A. Horton Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The first known party of white men who entered the area that became Utah included a Franciscan Friar, Silvestre Velez de Escalante. This expedition passed through the Milford Valley in the fall of 1776 and it was when they were camped at San Brigida, near or on the present site of Milford, that the important decision to turn back to Sante Fe was made.

Near the hot springs which are 15 or 20 miles farther south, Escalante recorded that the territory of the bearded Indians they had first encountered at the Sevier River extended to that point. It is not …

An Inquiry Into The Time Elements Of The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets Of Revelation Nine, Robert Lee Mole Jan 1957

An Inquiry Into The Time Elements Of The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets Of Revelation Nine, Robert Lee Mole

Master's Theses

Statement of the problem

It was the purpose of this investigation, (l) to discover whether the dates as given in the Litch-Smith view of Revelation the ninth chapter, which ends the times of the fifth and sixth trumpets on August 11, 1840, agree with both the Bible and history; and if not, (2) to determine whether a solution is possible that would agree with both factors in view of the criticism presently leveled at the Litch-Smith view. This criticism is based on the seeming inability to find historical facts to support this view, and also on the exegesis of the …

A Study Of The United States-Korea Treaty Of 1882, Rai Won Pak

This study covers not only the cause of Korea’s entry into the world affairs with the United States in 1882, but also it is a study of modern power politics in the Far East, in which Korea played a significant role.

The importance of the Korea position in international affairs has been dimly treated by the Western World - yet, she is a nation populated by approximately thirty millions; the thirteenth largest nation in the world, and Koreans are the most homogenous people in the world; the nation, which is thrust down off the coast of Asia between the thirty-fifth …

George Orwell And The Problems Of The Contemporary Writer, Mary Chappell Sidney Jan 1957

George Orwell And The Problems Of The Contemporary Writer, Mary Chappell Sidney

Graduate Thesis Collection

Orwell is painfully aware of almost all the difficulties under which the present day writer labors. These range from the squalid reality of poverty (espeoially true in his own case) to a serious uncertainty over the nature and purpose of literature. However, four problems seem to stick in his mind and he returns to them continually- They are (1) the difficulty of maintaining one's intellectual and artistiointegrity in a world whioh increasingly threatens personal freedom; (2) the neoessity of finding a balance between the claims of art and those of propaganda in literary works; (3) the steady deterioration of the …
