The Theological Significance Of Johann Albrecht Bengel, Robert Spieler May 1957

The Theological Significance Of Johann Albrecht Bengel, Robert Spieler

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The position of Johann Albrecht Bengel in the history of Lutheran theology has never been defined in a detailed way for the English-speaking Church. One reason for this is the paucity of available primary sources necessary for such a project.

The Study Of The Problem Of Suffering And Chastening, Lester A. Wetzstein May 1957

The Study Of The Problem Of Suffering And Chastening, Lester A. Wetzstein

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "The mid-week prayer meeting was the setting that provided the first incentive for this study. The mystery of the subject has been in the background of the writer's thinking from his early teens. As the people united in prayer, they would follow much of the usual pattern week after week. Occasionally some particular suffering of unusual severity prompted the people to unite in praying for deliverance. The writer definitely had no thought of questioning their faith. He is confident that they were sincere in the prayer they were offering. Then in the same prayer someone would pray for the …

A Comparison Of The Wesleyan And Keswickian Interpretations Of The Work Of The Holy Spirit In Believers, John Mcclimans May 1957

A Comparison Of The Wesleyan And Keswickian Interpretations Of The Work Of The Holy Spirit In Believers, John Mcclimans

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem of the Christian believer's deliverance from sin is of concern to all traditional Christian theology. That the believer has a root of sin from which he must be delivered before he may enter heaven is generally granted. The point of divergence lies in the answers to those questions; what is original sin, when and how may one expect deliverance from it? Among the various Wesleyan groups a "this-life" solution to the sin problem is stressed, but because there are various answers to the question, "what is original sin?" the nature of the solution will be variously understood. The …

A Study Of The Biblical Basis For Tithing, John W. Anderson May 1957

A Study Of The Biblical Basis For Tithing, John W. Anderson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Tithing is included as a portion of a Christian's obligation to the Church by most Christian groups of today. A considerable amount of material has been written on the subject. These materials vary in approach and interpretation. It was the author's purpose to find the Biblical basis and teaching for tithing, both in the Old and New Testaments.

A Biblical Study Of The Divorce Problem, Nathan Krampitz May 1957

A Biblical Study Of The Divorce Problem, Nathan Krampitz

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The minister has a complex task.. He is a preacher, teacher, counsellor, and pastor. Part of his work is to perform marriages. In doing this he is often asked to perform marriages where one or both parties are divorcees. He needs to decide then whether or not he will marry them.. This is not an easy decision to make.

Most churches have an official ruling for the denomination. But many ministers do not adhere to this official ruling. There are also differences in the official positions which the churches take. Since there is so much confusion in the matter of …

A Study Of The Problem Of Suffering And Chastening, Lester A. Wetzstein May 1957

A Study Of The Problem Of Suffering And Chastening, Lester A. Wetzstein

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem of this study was to show that the ideas of suffering and chastening individually are derived from more than one original term and are universal realities throughout biblical history on the basis of terminology which appears in most books of the Bible, that both suffering and chastening are realities in human experience, and that suffering comprises one of the essential instruments in the greater purpose of the experience of chastening.

The reality of suffering is one of the most universal facts of human experience. From a child's first suffering of hunger pangs to the experience of death this …

These materials vary in approach and interpretation. It was the author's purpose to find the Biblical basis and teaching for tithing, both in the Old and New Testaments.

The repeated references to tithing in the Scripture mark it as a subject worthy of special study. The adverse view of some Christians, such as Dr. Charles Fuller and Joseph H. Cohn of the American Board of Missions to the Jews, toward …

The Pastor As Administrator Of Christian Education, Harold J. Elmer May 1957

The Pastor As Administrator Of Christian Education, Harold J. Elmer

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

We are living in one of history's most serious periods in a fast shrinking world where time and space are the essence. In time because of the great acceleration in the progress of science, in space because of a fast shrinking world that puts the nations elbows sharply one against another causing widespread disruption, confusion, diversion and aggression. Temporary expedients and the necessity to be first in the race in temporal importance has caused most Americans to forget their spiritual heritage and with new temptations and frustrations the.y either turn against all forms of religion to secularism and a materialistic …

The Relation Of Missionary Education To The Local Church, Katherine A. Melick May 1957

The Relation Of Missionary Education To The Local Church, Katherine A. Melick

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Missions today are throbbing with interest. New fields of missionary endeavor are opening up every day, while a few long established fields are closing, or have already closed. Missionary doors are open today to every church which desires their inclusion. Missions made alive through the avenue of missionary education could be made the bloodstream through which life could flow into the heart of the local church, and make every artery, concomitant to every organization or phase of the church program, gain in strength thereby.

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich May 1957

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There have been many histories written on the great movements of American History and most states have had their histories, but almost endless localities have been neglected. Yet it is in the localities that we find the greatest stories and problems of the states, nations, and world in their embryonic stages. There is no better place to begin a realization of the heritage of America than in the story of one's own locality. It is for these reasons that I have chosen to write this paper upon the history of Montpelier, Idaho.

An Investigation Of The History Of The Virginia Manufactory Of Arms, James N. Haskett May 1957

An Investigation Of The History Of The Virginia Manufactory Of Arms, James N. Haskett

Honors Theses

The first years of freedom were not calm ones for the people of the new Republic. This was as true in Virginia as elsewhere. in the State itself there was the ever present danger of slave insurrection and the Wars of the French Revolution which raged in Europe were in grave danger of spreading into this hemisphere. This situation caused the State to make provisions to secure four thousand stands of farms for its militia in 1796. This proved to be a very difficult task, for the European hostilities had seriously limited the amount of arms available.

Though Virginia had …

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones May 1957

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the study of the New Testament Kerygma we can recognize that the life, death, resurrection, and exaltation are one great act of God by which He made the New Covenant. However in our study of these events we separate them for convenience. So in our study of the Old Covenant we can recognize that the deliverance, giving of the Law, ratification of the Covenant, and conquest of Canaan are one great act of God by which He made the Old Covenant. But here too we separated these events for the purpose of clarity in investigating them. And for want …

The Concept Of Education In The Light Of The Theology Of D. Martin Luther, Won Yong Ji May 1957

The Concept Of Education In The Light Of The Theology Of D. Martin Luther, Won Yong Ji

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This thesis is a study of the theological implications of Luther’s emphasis on “education” and an examination of the contributions if any, which Luther made to education, eventually derived from such an emphasis, to his subsequent generations. Its purpose is to survey briefly his theology in order to determine the theological significance or implications of his underlying pedagogical principles and practices. “What is Luther‘s view on education?” is the final goal of this study.

This study should prove to be a value to Lutheran educators in particular in that attempts to bring Lutheran educational practices into harmony with the educational …

Word-Making Potentialities Of English, Georgie A. Gurney Apr 1957

Word-Making Potentialities Of English, Georgie A. Gurney

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the various methods of word-formation in the English language, to ascertain which methods are active in the post-World War II of today, and decide, if possible, which methods are coming into increasing use and which methods are temporarily out of favor.

For this study materials over a seventeen -year period 1939-1956 were consulted, and then the war words which seemed to find no permanent place in the language were discarded. Many of the war words were retained, however, if the seemed to fill a continuing need.

Of course, any judgement concerning what …

A Historical Study Of The Friends Doctrine Of Scripture, Dorothy E. Barratt Apr 1957

A Historical Study Of The Friends Doctrine Of Scripture, Dorothy E. Barratt

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

There a.re various theological positions taken by modern day Friends. Some Friends are evangelical, others are theologically liberal. In analyzing this situation one of the major reasons proposed to explain the tendency toward liberalism is related to the Friends' basic view of objective authority in general and a view of Scripture in particular. The question arises as to whether the view of Scripture held traditionally by Quakers accounts necessarily for the tendency toward religious liberalism and whether the Friends' view is actually at variance with evangelical thought today or through the course of history. The investigation is concerned with determining …

A Historical Study Of Four Famous Western Gunfighters, William F. Cheek Apr 1957

A Historical Study Of Four Famous Western Gunfighters, William F. Cheek

Master's Theses

In any argument that might arise concerning the question of who were the greatest gunfighters of all time, the qualifications of four men to this hallowed position will never be questioned. Indeed, the names of Billy the Kid (Henry McCarty), Wyatt Earp, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, and William Barclay "Bat" Masterson, have become symbols for the turbulent and lawless days of the 1870's and 1880's in the Southwest. In addition each man has been raised to a position alongside Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill in the evolution of the great American legend.

What were those men really like? Is their …

Concerts, Opera, And Virtuosi In New York And Boston, 1861-1865, Barbara Jean Anthes Mar 1957

Concerts, Opera, And Virtuosi In New York And Boston, 1861-1865, Barbara Jean Anthes

History ETDs

Any conflict as profound as the American Civil War might well be expected to have brought about far-reaching changes in family life, business, politics, and cultural interests of the North. Music may be taken as a representative cultural activity which is worthy of separate study to determine the extent of the war's influence. Since New York and Boston were musically significant, an analysis of concerts, opera, and virtuosi in these cities during the war years has been attempted as the theme of this research.

The Civil War Career Of Brevet Major-General James Harrison Wilson, U.S.A., Spencer Wilson Jan 1957

The Civil War Career Of Brevet Major-General James Harrison Wilson, U.S.A., Spencer Wilson

History ETDs

Historians have expended a great deal of effort upon the principal leaders of both the Union and Confederate military forces. A number of fine biographies have been written on the major figures of the civil war, such as Douglas Southall Freeman's monumental works on Robert E. Lee and those immediately under him, Adam Badeau's several volumes on Ulysses S. Grant, Lloyd Lewis' account of William Tecumseh Sherman, and H. J. Eckenrode and Bryan Conrad's James Longstreet: Lee's War Horse. But in studies of these important figures, many of the subordinate commanders often have been relegated to minor roles, whereas actually …

Cézanne, The Formal Approach, Annette B. Picher Jan 1957

Cézanne, The Formal Approach, Annette B. Picher

Senior Scholar Papers

The understanding and illustration of the most important formal principles in the work of Paul Cézanne was the object of my study, beginning with the approach to form of two other periods before Cézanne, in order to get a perspective view of his place in the time-stream of art. My study focuses on still life because of its expediency for handling in the studio and also because the still life painter is more directly involved with formal techniques of painting, including design and execution. He is more involved with how he paints than what he paints; he must interpret the …

A Relationship Between Eastern Thought And Western Psychotherapy : An Application Of Taoism And Zen To Client-Centered Therapy, Lloyd Saxton Jan 1957

A Relationship Between Eastern Thought And Western Psychotherapy : An Application Of Taoism And Zen To Client-Centered Therapy, Lloyd Saxton

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper does not purport to be an examination of Zen or Taoism, but rather a view of certain aspects of Zen and Taoism, but rather a view of certain aspects of Zen and Taoism from the vantage point of contemporary psychology, to see if a metaphysic, a philosophical resting-place, might not be found for the admittedly pragmatic science of clinical psychology.

The questions the paper asks, then, and attempts to answer, are (1) can such a formulation be made, and (2) does psychotherapy conducted from this point of view move satisfactorily.

Church-Home Relationships In Church Schools Of The Central District Of The California-Nevada Conference Of The Methodist Church, Virginia Florence Curtis Jan 1957

Church-Home Relationships In Church Schools Of The Central District Of The California-Nevada Conference Of The Methodist Church, Virginia Florence Curtis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Noteworthy contributions in the field of church-home cooperation in religious education are seen in the church school curriculum of the Character Research Project at Union College, Schnectady, New York, of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. and of the Episcopal Church. These contributions to the field of church-home relationships are described and analysed in Chapter III.

This thesis is not concerned with the evaluation of the work being done by these groups; it is concerned with what is being done in the area of church-home relationships within the Methodist Church. Specifically stated, the purpose of the thesis is: (1) to determine whether …

History Of The Japan Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1901-1924, Murray L. Nichols Jan 1957

History Of The Japan Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1901-1924, Murray L. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is of course to fulfill thesis requirements, but more important to me is a desire that those who read it may gain a greater understanding of the mission in Japan. The membership of the church seems to have shared the traditional American opinion that the Far East is of little consequence in our affairs, and have given the area little attention. Missionaries have been and still are reluctant to go there; feelings of failure have persisted because of the early experiences in Japan. However, those who have seriously given their attention to missionary labors in …

A Study Of General And Religious Personal Problems Of Tenth, Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Seminary Students, Wilson K. Andersen Jan 1957

A Study Of General And Religious Personal Problems Of Tenth, Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Seminary Students, Wilson K. Andersen

Theses and Dissertations

Because it seemed likely that teachers of adolescent Latter-day Saint boys and girls might benefit from an up-to-date view about what their students are personally concered, a need was felt for this particular kind of survey. A review of the related literature indicated a dearth of material in this area, particularly in connection with Latter-day Saint youth.
