Agricultural Society Of Albemarle County, Virginia, G. Harold Williams Jan 1965

Agricultural Society Of Albemarle County, Virginia, G. Harold Williams

Master's Theses

The agricultural society which took the lead in this second movement was the Agricultural Society of Albemarle; an organization founded by professional men who desired to bring about agricultural reform for all the people in Virginia. A long list of accomplishments occurred during the years in which the society prospered, and some of the key agricultural reforms were introduced at their meetings. The decline of the Society came in late 1841 when a new and informal organisation began to draw members from the more loosely formed Albemarle Society. Prosperity was brought to Albemarle County by the Society and its accomplishments …

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight And The Chivalric Ideal Of The Fourteenth Century, Nancy Lenz Harvey Jan 1965

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight And The Chivalric Ideal Of The Fourteenth Century, Nancy Lenz Harvey

Master's Theses

The fourteenth-century alliterative, metrical romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one or the most brilliant examples or medieval verso. In spite of persistent study, scholars have been unable to identify the poet, but the genius of the man is easily realized. The Gawain poet, as he must be called, combines brilliant realism with the fabulous, elements of the Christian ideal with pagan folklore, as the nuances of mood balance on the exactness of wording and description.

The following pages will attempt to show how the poet shaped his numerous resources to present a poem vital and alive with …

Henrik Ibsen And Thomas Hardy : A Sociological Comparison, Garland Karr Linkous Jr. Jan 1965

Henrik Ibsen And Thomas Hardy : A Sociological Comparison, Garland Karr Linkous Jr.

Master's Theses

Although much has been written about the plays of Henrik Ibsen and the novels of Thomas Hardy, there have been no notable comparisons of the works of the two men, perhaps because they wrote in the two different media. Another possible explanation is the fact that Ibsen is universally regarded as the father of modern drama, but Hardy's status-whether he is the last Victorian novelist or the first modern one-is disputed. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate, by comparison, that Hardy should very definitely be classed with the modern, realistic writers.

The final Chapter of this paper …

A Study Of The Vocal Music Preferences And Interests Of 116 Junior High School Boys In Two Semi-Rural Iowa Communities, Willa Ruth Hunter

Vocal music activities at the junior high school level are of significant importance in the creative and personal development of the adolescent. During these junior high school years a boy quite often goes through the greatest vocal crisis of his musical life. In order to retain and train the adolescent voice for future personal enjoyment, the interest and participation of the junior high school boy in choral activities must be maintained. The use of …

Honors Papers

This study is based on interviews with the painters, the limited literature which has been published in English or Chinese on art topics in Taiwan, and mainly on the study of the works in the painters' studios and at exhibitions.

Basic to such an investigation are certain questions regarding the relation of these young artists to traditional Chinese painting: on what basis can these painters be aligned with Chinese tradition; is it not possible that they are so influenced by the western 'isms' that they should simply be called Chinese who paint western style pictures; is it necessary to make …

The United States And Paraguay, 1845-1860: Misunderstanding, Miscalculation, And Misconduct, Thomas Orin Flickema

Wayne State University Dissertations

In 1845 the United States had its first, if tentative diplomatic relations with the Government of Paraguay. The people and Government of the United States knew as little of Paraguay as they did of Japan. To the United States the nation of Paraguay was a secluded and unknown state. But at this point the validity of this comparison between Japan and Paraguay ends. The United States never developed the interest in Paraguay that it did in Japan. There were two basic reasons which explain this indifference on the part of the United States, which was broken only by one sporadic …

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The rise and fall of Dick Diver is the central concern of Tender Is The Night, and an analysis of the novel reveals that Fitzgerald meticulously arranged the details of Diver's intricate destiny. Many readers of the novel, however, were unable to understand the …
