An Inquiry Into The Nature And Worship Of God With Special Reference To The Second Commandment, Virgil Dunbar Apr 1965

An Inquiry Into The Nature And Worship Of God With Special Reference To The Second Commandment, Virgil Dunbar

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem considered in this study has been: Does the Bible permit the use of man made images of God, or images that man might intend to represent God? This is related to the problem: Can an image created by man help man to know God?

The word image, in this study, has been selected to cover the wide subject of visual art work. Both statues and pictures are included, because no essential difference between statues and pictures has been found.

The Method In Beckett's Madness : A Critical Study Of Samuel Beckett's Drama, Robert Grattan

Master's Theses

Richmond's Reaction To Abraham Lincoln : From November 1860 - March 1881, James Alexander Deangelis Apr 1965

Richmond's Reaction To Abraham Lincoln : From November 1860 - March 1881, James Alexander Deangelis

Master's Theses

I have endeavored to give an account of Richmond's reaction to Abraham Lincoln from his election in November, 1860, to his inauguration on March 4, 1861. I have also tried to emphasize the reaction in Richmond because it represented not only the attitude in Virginia but in many respects the upper South as a whole.

The paper is divided into two principal parts, each divided into three chapters. The first area concerns the effect of Lincoln's election on the people of Richmond. This is discussed in three chapters; the first, a study of the background events leading up to the …

The United Church Of Canada History Of The Union Of The Presbyterian, Methodist, And Congregational Churches Of Canada, Walter Seehagel Apr 1965

The United Church Of Canada History Of The Union Of The Presbyterian, Methodist, And Congregational Churches Of Canada, Walter Seehagel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study concerns itself with the movement which brought The United Church of Canada into being. The writer is concerned not so much with the theology and the psychology of the movement, as he is with the history of the movement. Accordingly, the study will endeavor to set forth "how" The United Church of Canada came into being, and not “why" it came into being. It will therefore trace the union movement step by step until its consummation on June 10, 1925.

A History Of Presbyterian Church Schools In New Mexico, Lois Edith Huebert

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose was to investigate and trace the establishment, growth, and philosophy of the Presbyterian church schools in New Mexico. It was also an attempt to determine the relationship of these schools to public education.

This was a historical research. Reports of the Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction in New Mexico were used. Statistics were secured from the State Department of Education and from current church school teachers. Histories of the state, education, and church in books and theses were utilized. Other sources included: New Mexico Court Cases, Survey report of the church and General Assembly, Menaul yearbook, files …

The Land Claims Of Santa Clara Pueblo, Joanne Baklini Feb 1965

The Land Claims Of Santa Clara Pueblo, Joanne Baklini

History ETDs

In 1848 the United States assumed sovereignty in New Mexico under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo and promised to respect, among other things, the property of the Indians. This began a land problem which has not been solved to this day.

In an effort to solve the Indian and other land problems, Congress established the Office of Surveyor-General for New Mexico. In 1858, upon the recommendation of the Surveyor-General, the Santa Clara Pueblo Grant was confirmed and on November 1, 1864 it was patented. However, the Santa Clara Indians did not receive title to the land which they …

The Doctor In Marcel Proust's A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu., Michael L. Rowland Jan 1965

The Doctor In Marcel Proust's A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu., Michael L. Rowland

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This study undertakes an examination of the doctors and illnesses in Marcel Proust’s life and of the doctors and illnesses in A La Recherche du Temps perdu. The first chapter reviews Prout’s relationship with doctors, especially with his father, who was a practicing physician. Illness, in addition to being an inconvenience, was for Proust a source of many important privileges, upon which he never ceased to draw. In this respect, the question is raised to what degree Proust’s illnesses were genuine. The doctors that appear in A La Recherche du Temps perdu comprise the next topic of discussion. An effort …

Maya: Five Hundred Years Later, Thomas A. Donahue Jan 1965

Maya: Five Hundred Years Later, Thomas A. Donahue

Senior Scholar Papers

I have been asked many times, during the course of this past year, what the topic of my Senior Scholar paper was to be. When I answer that I have chosen to study the Mayan Indians, the response is usually a rather uncomfortable silence, followed by such a question as, Who are they? I will admit, however, that the Indians of Southern Mexico and Guatemala do not make the headlines, or the sports page, in the Waterville Sentinel, on any sort of a daily basis. They do not take precedence over the bombing runs in Vietnam, or the exploits of …

Gabriel Marcel, Master Of Mysterious Wisdom., Ronald E. Lane Jan 1965

Gabriel Marcel, Master Of Mysterious Wisdom., Ronald E. Lane

Philosophy ETDs

The philosophic thought of Gabriel marcel is impossible to categorize. He does indeed employ a phenomenological method of approach to being; and affirms that “today there can be no philosophy worth considering that will not involve an analysis, of a phenomenological type, bearing on the fundamental situation of man.” But his philosophical analysis does not have the character of Husserlian ‘bracketing’ or isolating in eidetic purification. It is an explication of the personal ground of thought, including its relationship to the ‘other’ human or divine, rather than an examination of isolated and purified experiences of consciousness: “By ‘phenomenological analysis’ I …

The Teaching Of John Wesley Concerning The Mediatorial Kingdom Of God, Charles Stephen Waite Jan 1965

The Teaching Of John Wesley Concerning The Mediatorial Kingdom Of God, Charles Stephen Waite

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

It was the task of this investigation to determine the teaching of John Wesley concerning the nature of the mediatorial kingdom; to discover his view pertaining to the nature of the mediatorial kingdom in relation to the individual; and to decide upon the relation of his doctrine of the mediatorial kingdom to the Church and last things.

The justification for this research was based upon two reasons. First of all, the man, whose writings with which this study has concerned itself, has been concerned an outstanding theologian and biblical scholar. John Lawson wrote concerning the importance of Wesley to Christianity; …

Investigation Of The Form And Content Of The German Hörspiel, Adèle M. Hodgkins Jan 1965

Investigation Of The Form And Content Of The German Hörspiel, Adèle M. Hodgkins

Senior Scholar Papers

The German Hörspiel, is an art-form which we in America may not recognize. Commercialism in our radio system doesn't allow this type of art to prosper, for as far as plays are concerned, the only type that sponsors are able to "sell" to the majority of the public is the "soap opera". The average American tends to be too restless or busy to sit down and concentrate on a play he can only hear, especially when he could see and hear one on television. Those who would welcome and support a higher level radio play are obviously not enough in …

A Study Of The Active Amateur And Semiprofessional Theater Groups In Central California, Phyllis Jane Nusz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the last several years lists of theater organizations in California newspapers hare grown steadily. This writer asserts a need for study of active amateur and semiprofessional theater groups in California for gaining knowledge and understanding of cultural activities taking place about the Western United States. Such material would help students and adults interested in drama gain information where theaters remain active according to particular tastes.

After receiving a list of nonprofessional theater members of American National Theatre and Academy's California regions, theater activity presented itself to be of such quantity within the state that it became necessary to make …

Political Affiliations Of American Economic Elites: Wayne County, Michigan, 1844, 1860, As A Test Case, Alexandra Mccoy Jan 1965

Political Affiliations Of American Economic Elites: Wayne County, Michigan, 1844, 1860, As A Test Case, Alexandra Mccoy

Wayne State University Dissertations

The scope of this study has been dictated by its methodology, which, in turn, has been determined by its aim. In order to formulate with precision a theory of political behavior for economic leaders of the mid-nineteenth century it is necessary to document the economic careers, ethnic origins, religious affiliations and family backgrounds of a carefully selected economic elite. What is obtained by the extensive documentation of over one-hundred and seventy-five individuals is the opportunity to study the relationship of these attributes to political affiliation. By tabulating these attributes against party affiliation, relationships were discovered which indicate that religious and …

The Political Thought And Activity Of Heber J. Grant, Seventh President Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Loman Franklin Aydelotte Jan 1965

The Political Thought And Activity Of Heber J. Grant, Seventh President Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Loman Franklin Aydelotte

Theses and Dissertations

Heber J. Grant reflected, both consciously and unconsciously, a Mormon agrarian background and ideology. His moral fervor and idealism was in the tradition of his father, Jedediah Morgan Grant, the leading figure of the 1856 "Mormon Reformation." Grant's belief in self-sufficiency, thrift, solvency, and laissez faire government reflected the frontier environment and his business training; however, the dominant force of his life was the principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially after he was appointed an Apostle and later President of that organization. His outstanding traits were his straight-forward outspokenness and his persistence which largely explain …

An Analysis Of The Accounts Relating Joseph Smith's Early Visions, Paul R. Cheesman Jan 1965

An Analysis Of The Accounts Relating Joseph Smith's Early Visions, Paul R. Cheesman

Theses and Dissertations

Joseph Smith, prophet and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated that when he was fourteen years old he had received a visitation from two members of the Godhead: the Father and the Son. He was alone when he went into the woods to pray, and was therefore the only witness to the manifestation of these personages. He also declared that when he was seventeen years old he was visited by an angel named Moroni. Again he was without witnesses. For a first-hand account of these two experiences we must rely on a single source, Joseph …

A Study Of The Concerns Of Tenth And Eleventh Grade Seminary Students About The Thirty Five Directional Objectives Of The Lds Seminary System, Lemar Olyn Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether LDS sophomore and junior seminary students have significant differences of concern about concepts and attitudes contained in each of the thirty-five Directional Objectives which guide the curriculum of the Seminary System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The study involved LDS Seminary students from the Burley, Idaho; Arimo, Idaho and Ogden (Weber) Utah seminaries, and consisted of 164 sophomore and 109 junior students.

An instrument was developed called the Student Inventory. It consisted of statements of concern expressed by a cross section of seminary students about the thirty-five …

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Australia To 1900, John D. Hawkes Jan 1965

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Australia To 1900, John D. Hawkes

Theses and Dissertations

This work is a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in Australia to 1900. The first Latter-day Saint missionary to Australia was William Barret, a British convert who left directly from England and arrived at Adelaide, South Australia in 1840. In approximately 1841 Elder Andrew Anderson, also from England, arrived with his family at Sydney, New South Wales. These two Elders proselyted for the church, but the extent of their work is uncertain.

John Murdock and Charles Wandell were the first missionaries from Utah; they arrived at Sydney in October, 1851. The appointment of these …

Polygamy In Utah And Surrounding Area Since The Manifesto Of 1890, Jerold A. Hilton Jan 1965

Polygamy In Utah And Surrounding Area Since The Manifesto Of 1890, Jerold A. Hilton

Theses and Dissertations

I selected this topic in 1962 primarily from curiosity to discover the facts concerning present day polygamy in Utah, allegedly still abundant. Perhaps the motivation may be described as an amateur detective's zeal. Considerable material seemed to be available about polygamy in Utah before 1890, when the practice was mostly abandoned by the Mormon people, but, apparently, little has been written on this subject covering the period since that date. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to cover polygamy in Utah and close proximity from 1890 to the present (1965). Its scope includes: first, continued plural marriages for two …

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull Jan 1965

A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was designed as a follow up of a study completed in 1959 which developed nine criteria for measuring religious maturity. The objective of this study was to develop a scale based on the nine criteria and administer it to seminary teachers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to explore the possibility of measuring differences in religious maturity. It was assumed that younger teachers who obtained a degree in a human behaviorally-oriented field of study would show the greatest level of religious maturity.
