The Groaning Creation : A Study Of Man In St. Paul And Modern Art, Joel Nickel Jun 1965

The Groaning Creation : A Study Of Man In St. Paul And Modern Art, Joel Nickel

Bachelor of Divinity

In order to organize this presentation, we have adopted as a structura1 outline, the Pau1ine view of man. This procedure makes us aware from the outset of the great danger involved in attempting to relate Paul and modern artists. "To begin with man is to begin at the wrong end, for Pau1's ideas did not arise from a study of man for his own sake. Paul is concerned to look at man only in relation to God.” For the artist, man becomes the sole criterion. Art, by definition, is an anthropocentric endeavor.

Shakespeare's Use Of Letters In Twelve Representative Plays, Clara Beery Mcilwraith Jun 1965

Shakespeare's Use Of Letters In Twelve Representative Plays, Clara Beery Mcilwraith

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study of Shakespeare's use of letters is twofold. First, representative plays will be examined to determine some of the ways in which letters contributed to such important elements as plot structure, character delineation, creation of atmosphere, heightening of suspense, or a combination of two or more of these and possibly other uses. In addition, the letters will be studied for the evidence they may furnish in themselves, of the development of Shakespeare's dramatic technique and artistry.

The Hitler-Youth In The Third Reich, David Crawford Poteet Jun 1965

The Hitler-Youth In The Third Reich, David Crawford Poteet

Master's Theses

This work attempts to answer, at least in part, two specific questions: why did the Hitler-Youth arise, and what was it? Any judgement which this paper offers as to why the Hitler-Youth arose by all rights should be questioned. Probably it is too soon to attempt such an analysis. But if attempts were never made, the criticism, which almost invariably results in further thinking and perhaps firmer conclusions would have no point at which to begin.

The Use Of The Term Ο̋Νομα In The Gospel According To Matthew, Alvin Young Jun 1965

The Use Of The Term Ο̋Νομα In The Gospel According To Matthew, Alvin Young

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is an inquiry into the use of ο̋νομα in the Gospel According to Matthew. It seeks to trace the background of the term ο̋νομα and show the theological heritage that it possesses. With this background in mind, ο̋νομα has been studied within Matthew with special concern for its use within prepositional phrases.

This study seeks to answer certain questions. For example: What is the background of ο̋νομα for its theological meaning? How does Matthew use the background material to suit his purposes and the meaning of his gospel? Does Matthew use ο̋νομα differently from the background sources? Is …

The Relationship Between Law And Sin In Romans 7, Kenneth Mangelsdorf Jun 1965

The Relationship Between Law And Sin In Romans 7, Kenneth Mangelsdorf

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the purpose of this thesis to develop an answer to the question, ''What is the relationship between law and sin in Romans 7?" It is important to note that this inquiry is based on two presuppositions. The first is that there really is a relationship between law and sin in Romans 7. The second is that Romans 7 can validly be studied in the light of that relationship. The second assumption is based on the first and is more significant, because it determines the method to be used in answering the problem to which this thesis proposes to …

The Value Of Literature In Lutheran Catechetics, David Lange Jun 1965

The Value Of Literature In Lutheran Catechetics, David Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper, then, is to investigate the nature, functions, and objectives of literature; to explore and delineate its congruencies with and contradictions of the nature, functions, and objectives of Lutheran catechetics; and finally to assess its value for the catechetical enterprise and determine whether it warrants the construction of a literature-oriented program of catechetics within The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.

The Figure Of Marriage In Ephesians 5:21-33, Fredrick Wiese Jun 1965

The Figure Of Marriage In Ephesians 5:21-33, Fredrick Wiese

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is an investigation of the figure of marriage in Ephesians 5:21-33. The specific problem is to determine whether or not in these verses the figure exists as it does throughout Scripture. Thus this discussion necessitates establishing what characteristics, if any, are common to the figure of marriage in the Old Testament and New Testament. The ultimate question that results is are Christ and the Church regarded as husband and wife in these verses?" The answer will be determined in these verses by specific statements to that effect or by the description of the relationship between Christ and the …

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman Jun 1965

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman

Masters Theses

Preface

This paper shall describe and analyze United States' policy towards Korea from 1834, when American attention was first attracted to that country because of possible trade opportunities, to 1954, which saw the completion of the Geneva Conference on Korea. Throughout this period American policy was neither static, nor was it ever well defined. During this span of one hundred and twenty years American policy in Korea falls logically into two main periods:

i) the initial period from 1834 to 1943 during which time America's primary concern was the establishment and maintenance of the "Open Door" policy;

and ii) the …

An Investigation Of The Need To Correlate Academic Subject Areas With Industrial Arts, Ernest James Boedcher Jun 1965

An Investigation Of The Need To Correlate Academic Subject Areas With Industrial Arts, Ernest James Boedcher

Graduate Student Research Papers

This study was initiated as a result of a need that became apparent in two industrial arts seminars at Central Washington State College. Studies reveal that industrial arts teachers use principles, laws, and applications of mathematics and science daily, but these are seldom recognized and made meaningful to the students. As a result of this study industrial arts teachers may see a way to use this material to initiate similar situations in their teaching.

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman Jun 1965

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Panama Canal is one of the major commercial waterways of the world and, furthermore, it is vital to the defence of the United States. ·Before this canal could be constructed, it was necessary to persuade the British government to give up its right to share with the United States the building of an isthmian canal. The Clayton-Bulwer treaty of 1850 had provided that neither the United States nor Great Britain would carry out the project singly. Later through the Hay-Pauncefote treaty Great Britain agreed to abrogate the Clayton-Bulwer treaty and allowed the United States alone to build and …

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather Jun 1965

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather

Masters Theses

Introduction

The focus of this study has derived, in part, from the experience of teaching a course in "The History of Social Thought" to undergraduate sociology majors. The more comprehensive texts in the field accord Dante some notice. But the treatment he receives as a social thinker is uniformly patronizing. One of the most substantial and adequate of these texts, for example -- the three-volume study by Howard Becker and Harry Elmer Barnes-- has this to say:

The key to Dante's character and to his social theory as well is to be found in the fact that "world peace was …

Music Education In The Public Schools Of New Mexico, 1962-1963, Gene Ernest Fields May 1965

Music Education In The Public Schools Of New Mexico, 1962-1963, Gene Ernest Fields

Music ETDs

It has been said that music is now an accepted part of the curriculum of the public schools of the United States and no longer requires external justification (Lawson, 1960, p. 3). Certainly, the growth or music education during the past fifty years has been phenomenal, and the widespread acceptance of various music subjects in elementary and secondary school curricula has given music educators much reason to accept such a statement. Recent criticism of music as a subject, however, has caused many music educators to reevaluate the reasons for the existence or music in education. The critics who would term …

Pedro FermíN De Mendinueta;Colonial Governor Of New Mexico, 1767-1778., Elizabeth Nelson Patrick May 1965

Pedro FermíN De Mendinueta;Colonial Governor Of New Mexico, 1767-1778., Elizabeth Nelson Patrick

History ETDs

Pedro Fermín de Mendinueta was born in Elizondo, Valle de Baztan, Navarra in 1725, probably on July 7. His baptismal record states he received that sacrament on July 8 and in as much as children were baptized as soon after birth as possible and often named after the saint on whose day they were born, it is probable that he, indeed, was born on the da of San Fermín, July 7. San Fermín, incidentally is the patron saint of Navarra, and a child born on that day would very likely bear that name. He was the legitimate son of don …

The Oval Mirror., David Hugh Conford May 1965

The Oval Mirror., David Hugh Conford

English Language and Literature ETDs

I have little of that Dionysian faith which supposes that there are ways of "breaking through” to some ideal reality beyond the limits of the individual skin. We are all prisoners in individual cages of bones. It is difficult to even tap out a message to the people who have "known" us for years, and to communicate with strangers is a near impossibility. Yet it is one of poetry functions to attempt just that, for no poet worth his salt can, like Ivan Ivanich of Chekhov's "Gooseberries," murmur, "God forgive us sinners" and go to sleep.

Faced with, for me …

A Study For A Text In Spanish On Art Education For Elementary Classroom Teachers In Latin America, Amber Y. Wolcott May 1965

A Study For A Text In Spanish On Art Education For Elementary Classroom Teachers In Latin America, Amber Y. Wolcott

Art & Art History ETDs

Education is at a rather high level of sophistication and advancement in most areas of North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Unless information has been gained through travel, research and study, or personal contact with foreign students and visitors, it is difficult to realize there are places, such as most of Latin America, where children are deprived of good educational resources, schools sufficiently equipped with texts, materials, and well-trained teachers. Because of this, they are afforded little chance to fully develop an awareness of their surroundings. Usually, such an education is achieved under all possible conditions of study, exploration, …

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter May 1965

Social Status At The Court Of Alfonso Viii Of Castile, Lorle Ann Porter

History ETDs

Excerpt from introduction:

This is a study of the social structure of Castile in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The charter witness lists of that period as edited by Júlio González were the basis for this study. Charters formed an important part of the documentation of the Middle Ages. Royal charters, in general, officially conveyed the use of a specific property to a person who agreed to accept designated responsibilities. As the possession and or use of land was a key to medieval economy, it was essential that ownership or legitimate occupation was clear to the authorities. The …

The Cartography Of California, 1500-1759, Sally E. Moore

History ETDs

The following thesis is an affort to trace the growth and development of the concept of California in the cartographical representations produced in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The manner in which California appeared on European maps from an early period of discovery until the middle of the eighteenth century, at which time California began to form its true character on the cartography of the period. The source material used in this work is adequately cited, with bibliography and list of illustrations included to enable the reader to find any material within in which he might be interested. Poetry Of Conrad Aiken., Henry B. Chapin May 1965

Poetry Of Conrad Aiken., Henry B. Chapin

English Language and Literature ETDs

The method I have followed in writing this dissertation has been to examine critically in chronological order those poems which in my judgment most significantly reveal the different characteristics of Conrad Aiken’s poetry. The method of critical examination has been empirical. The poems have been read and studied without reference to a strict literary theory. Those qualities which are present in Aiken’s poetry have been stated and then usually supported with quotations.

The Literary Reputation Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Knight Elliott May 1965

The Literary Reputation Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Knight Elliott

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study of the literary reputation of F. Scott Fitzgerald is to examine the aspects of Fitzgerald’s life and work which have been most frequently discussed by his American critics and thus to discover the foundations of his reputation. The criticism used for the study covers the forty-five-year period from the publication of Fitzgerald’s first novel in 1920 to the end of 1964. The study is limited to American criticism because the novels and stories deal with distinctly American themes, materials, and values; because they have enjoyed great popularity among Americans, and because a thorough appreciation of …

"The Craftsman Has A High And Extraordinary Mission: To Imbue The Useful Object With The Spirit Of Art.", Donald Knight Spaulding May 1965

"The Craftsman Has A High And Extraordinary Mission: To Imbue The Useful Object With The Spirit Of Art.", Donald Knight Spaulding

Art & Art History ETDs

It is a truism in industrial design that the simplest machine which performs the function is the best. This is functionalism in the strictest sense and, within limitations, it can be applied to crafts design. Design contains a logic, however personal, and a sense of order. These aspects are achieved in execution partly through repetition and variation (or extensions of repetition and variation such as contrast, symmetry, balance, etc.) and partly through the materials used; together they work for unity. Elements which are distracting or irrational tend to confuse and detract from the feeling of unity. The obvious analogy is …

Spanish Government In New Mexico At The End Of The Colonial Period, Marc Simmons May 1965

Spanish Government In New Mexico At The End Of The Colonial Period, Marc Simmons

History ETDs

Three years ago when this study was initiated, the intent was to describe the nature of political government in New Mexico during the Mexican period, 1821-1846. This task had been undertaken by Lansing B. Bloom almost fifty years previously and the results published in the journal Old Santa Fe. Much new material had since come to light, however, and it was felt that an entirely new appraisal of this era was in order. As research progressed, it became more and more obvious that no adequate treatment of the Mexican period could be attempted until a full understanding of government …

Thomas Paine:A Study In Social And Intellectual History, Jospeh V. Metzgar May 1965

Thomas Paine:A Study In Social And Intellectual History, Jospeh V. Metzgar

History ETDs

Excerpt From Preface:

My basic purpose then is to determine how far behind or ahead of his time was Thomas Paine. What was his relationship to the Enlightenment when one considers his political, social, or scientific thought? And finally what is his significance in social and intellectual history? Is Thomas Paine actually a thinker of "the second order of greatness" as Cecelia M. Kenyon and others contend or intimate? Or has he proved to be greater than that? I would hope to provide some possible answers to such questions.

Finally, I have no intention of trying to determine direct and …

The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins May 1965

The Transmountain Diversion Of Water From The Colorado River: A Legal-Historical Study., Kay Collins

History ETDs

Conflict is the inevitable result of a situation in which there is a large demand for water which is in short supply. And the Upper Basin of the Colorado River today offers no exception to that rule. The Eastern boundary of this Basin is the Continental Divide, meaning that water flowing on the eastern side of the divide will flow into the Atlantic Ocean and that west of it will flow into the Pacific. Each side of the Continental divide is hen divided into different river basins, the waters of which do not mingle because of the mountain barriers. Water …

Personalities And Personages: A Study Of The Protagonists In F. Scott Fitzgerald's Novels, Richard Schroeder May 1965

Personalities And Personages: A Study Of The Protagonists In F. Scott Fitzgerald's Novels, Richard Schroeder

English Language and Literature ETDs

In This Side of Paradise, F. Scott Fitzgerald stated a theme that was to be of prime importance not only in his first but also the rest of his novels. This theme, not an original one, is about the tendency in man to maitake the specious for the real or good. This problem is what Monsignor Darcy is discussing with Amory Blaine, the young hero of This Side of Paradise, when the Monsignor defines, to some extent, the terms personality and personage.

Frontier Problems In New Mexico Preceding The Mexican War, 1840-1846, Ward Alan Minge May 1965

Frontier Problems In New Mexico Preceding The Mexican War, 1840-1846, Ward Alan Minge

History ETDs

The original intent of this paper was to examine some phase of the interrelationship of the Mexican, Indian, and United States' cultures in New Mexico during the two decades of Mexico administration. Research soon revealed that cultural conflicts only contributed their share to the problems which existed on this frontier. Identification of the problem areas narrowed the period of interest of the few years preceding the "bloodless conquest" of New Mexico by the United States. These years, roughly from 1840 to 1846, saw the culmination of a combination of circumstances over which New Mexican officials had little or no control. …

A Historical Study Of The Medical Corps Of The Continental Army, Eloy C. Baca May 1965

A Historical Study Of The Medical Corps Of The Continental Army, Eloy C. Baca

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the establishment and development of the Medical Corps of the Continental Army, through its Directors General, during the Revolutionary War. It will review the administration of each of the four Directors General and will try to indicate the degree of efficiency or incompetence of the administration of each. The main objective of this thesis will be to relate the story of the Medical Corps during the Revolutionary War and determine whether this organization was efficient and gave proper and adequate medical care to the sick and wounded officers and men of the …

The New Western: Studies In Modern Western American Fiction, Gerald John Brenner May 1965

The New Western: Studies In Modern Western American Fiction, Gerald John Brenner

American Studies ETDs

This is a study of a handful of American novels, all of them written since 1939, all of them concerned in some manner with the American West. I have chosen 1939 as a beginning point for the study because it was then that Walter Van Tilburg Clark published The Ox-Bow Incident, a novel which took many of the standard ingredients of the stereotyped "Western and turned them to the uses of serious fiction. Unlike the hacks who followed the formula for success established by the dime novels and Zane Grey, and who dealt in fiction as in an earlier time …

The Nicaraguan Transit Route From 1849-1853, Roberta Holland Upton May 1965

The Nicaraguan Transit Route From 1849-1853, Roberta Holland Upton

Latin American Studies ETDs

Although the Isthmus of Panama was to become, and is today, the principal point of passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, considerable interest has been aroused periodically by the potential of a route in Nicaragua. The focal points of interest in Nicaragua have been the San Juan River and the Lake of Nicaragua which create a natural water passage for all but twelve of the 194 miles between Atlantic and Pacific. Yet, although men have dreamed of and planned for a passage through Nicaragua since the Sixteenth Century, the immediate pressures for transportation between the two oceans have been …
