Babylon To Zion On Forty-Two Dollars: The Disaster Of The Willie Company And An Evaluation Of The Handcart System, Larry R. Moses

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1847, the Mormon Church began a migration to the Great Salt Lake Basin, their Zion in the mountains. This pilgrimage was to continue for over half a century, and out of it was to come one of the truly epic stories of the western settlement. Before leaving Nauvoo, these self-styled, Saints of the modern era pledged themselves to set up a system to transport all of their members to Utah, regardless of their financial status. The vow was renewed at the October 1849 Conference held in Salt Lake City. President Heber C. Kimball, first councilor to Brigham Young, suggested …

The Role Of Women In Four Faulkner Novels, Betty W. Gray Jan 1966

The Role Of Women In Four Faulkner Novels, Betty W. Gray

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The women in the writings of William Faulkner have not captured the attention of readers or critics in the way that the male characters have. A close examination of the criticism of Faulkner' s writings reveals that little special attention has been paid to the literary treatment of the women per se. The women have usually been treated in connection with other themes.

An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham Jan 1966

An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The ancient art of filigree jewelry has almost become a lost art. Today, some of the jeweler-artist-craftsmen believe that much of the filigree being done lacks the originality that could make it a creative art expression. Because traditional filigree designs have been handed down from generation to generation they have become copies of what has been done before. Filigree design, by the definition of being any thread-like decoration, is a linear approach to jewelry. A linear approach suggests delicate work with a lightness and femininity. I have tried to maintain a light airy quality in my filigree jewelry, and for …

A Progressive Collection Of Transcriptions For The Development Of Woodwind Quintets At The Junior High School Level, Charles C. Hendrickson Jan 1966

A Progressive Collection Of Transcriptions For The Development Of Woodwind Quintets At The Junior High School Level, Charles C. Hendrickson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The emphasis on chamber music may be considered one of the most interesting and important developments in the school music program today. There is perhaps no other musical medium which holds greater possibilities for the development of the student's musical ability. In the years following World War II, the instrumental music programs in many schools have grown to the point where there are sufficient string and wind players to perform many major orchestral works. A student who performs in either an orchestra or band, however, cannot develop a critical sensitivity towards ensemble.

A Sourcebook For The Inexperienced String Teacher, Robert I. Iverson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is the purpose of this study to compile and organize information concerning the fundamental physical and mechanical techniques of playing each of the orchestral string instruments, such that with this sourcebook of information, the inexperienced string teacher or converted band man could establish and maintain a successful string program in the public schools of America. It is assumed that the musical concepts concerning interpretation, phrasing, form, theory. and counterpoint are a part of the inexperienced string teacher's background. The writer, due to lack of playing and teaching experience with string instruments, has not endeavored to lay down original string …

The Shift In Focus From The Group To The Individual In The Later Novels Of John Steinbeck, Sandra Lee Gabel Jan 1966

The Shift In Focus From The Group To The Individual In The Later Novels Of John Steinbeck, Sandra Lee Gabel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

John Steinbeck demonstrates a shift from the group hero, in some of his earlier novels, to the individual hero in his later novels. It is evident that in East of Eden and The Winter of Our Discontent Steinbeck is more concerned with the individual human being than he was in such earlier novels as Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. A contrast with two novels which fall in an earlier period, 1940 and before, will clarify the development of the individual man as hero in Steinbeck's later novels. Steinbeck changes his emphasis from the group, in Of …

Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman Dec 1965

Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman

Masters Theses

I. Religious Factors as a Cause of Revolution

Standard history books contain little or nothing of the documentary material which would relate religion to the factors contributing to the American Revolution. References to social, political, and economic causations abound, but only occasional statements concerning the influence of religion are found, and among these the role of the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Quaker persuasions receives most attention. Yet the involvement of the evangelical churches was significant enough to merit separate, intensive studies. It is the object of this essay to investigate the involvement of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist groups in …

John The Baptizer, Is He Elijah Who Is To Come?, Floyd Schoenhals Nov 1965

John The Baptizer, Is He Elijah Who Is To Come?, Floyd Schoenhals

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Synoptic Gospels to answer the question, Is John the Baptizer Elijah Who is to Come? In doing this, it is necessary, first of all, to see how Elijah is presented in the Old Testament and in Rabbinic Judaism. After this, there will be an investigation of the Synoptic materials which pertain to this question. These materials have arbitrarily been divided up into three major groupings.1. Material supplied by Mark and reused for the most part by Matthew and Luke. 2. Pertinent 'Q' material.3. Material peculiar to Luke.

The purpose of this …

Grief And The Pastor, Galen Drawbaugh Nov 1965

Grief And The Pastor, Galen Drawbaugh

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the pages that follow, Part I will give consideration to the emotion of grief and how it works itself out in the course of time. This is basic. The pastor must understand grief and "grief-work" before he can begin to adequately counsel the bereaved. Part II will look at the condition of abnormal grief. Here the purpose will be to recognize situations in which the pastor will wisely refer patients to those who are more professionally trained to counsel them. Part III will then consider the pastor's role as he seeks to counsel the bereaved in his congregation.

Is Christ The Son In The Parable Of The Wicked Husbandmen, Stephen Carter Nov 1965

Is Christ The Son In The Parable Of The Wicked Husbandmen, Stephen Carter

Master of Divinity Thesis

Is Christ the son in the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen? The Church would consider this question a valid one during any period of her history, because she has always associated the interpretation of parables with the content of her faith. But a question of this nature demands more careful consideration in the age of Biblical criticism, because it must be considered from several viewpoints. One hundred and fifty years ago, our question could have been viewed from this perspective: Did Jesus refer to Himself as the son in the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen as it is recorded in …

Evolutionary Theology Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin, His Critiics And A Personal Evaluation, Robert Letalien Nov 1965

Evolutionary Theology Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin, His Critiics And A Personal Evaluation, Robert Letalien

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper will be an attempt to evaluate the lifegoal of Teilhard, namely, his reconciliation of the theory of evolution with the Christian faith. The emphasis will be placed upon his hopes for the future of man in the light of his philosophy. The future of man he labels as the “Omega point." To see how this point is reached it will be necessary to briefly describe how Teilhard views the evolutionary process from the inception of matter until the fulfillment of all things at the Omega point.

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt Nov 1965

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt

Bachelor of Divinity

In the past few years theology has experienced a renewal in the area of hermeneutics. This renaissance includes more than a stimulating interest in the principles of interpretation, a periodic revival similar to those that have come and gone in other theological fields. Hermeneutics has broken the boundaries in which it has been confined since the age of orthodoxy and assumed totally new proportions, even to the extent of becoming the focal point of theology for some theologians. To trace some of the philosophical influences behind and in this movement is the proposed task of this paper.

The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg Nov 1965

The Doctrine Of Scripture In The Light Of The Relationship Of Inspiration And Inerrancy, James Hallerberg

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is written by one who is a member of the Church catholic, by one who is a Lutheran, and by one who does not necessarily make statement of dogmatic truth the exclusive property of men within the Lutheran tradition. This is said to disparage the Lutheran heritage not at all, but to indicate that one can at least be open to different systematic formulations. The point is also made to indicate to the reader that the student was conscious of his own heritage, but that at the same time both during the research and during the writing of …

The Explicative Route And The Momental Step:A Comparison Of The Pluralistic Focus In Leibniz And Whitehead., Richard L. Brougham Oct 1965

The Explicative Route And The Momental Step:A Comparison Of The Pluralistic Focus In Leibniz And Whitehead., Richard L. Brougham

Philosophy ETDs

There is little danger of disagreement if one states that Leibniz and Whitehead are two of the most significant "hylozoic” pluralists in Western philosophy. Both thinkers are concerned with the definite, final unities of being. Both philosophers attempted to ground their multiple individualities in a wider ultimate reality, and at the same time attempted to maintain the import and distinctness of these units as the ultimate components of that reality. The crux of Whitehead's philosophic endeavor was to "retain the balance between the individuality of existence and the relativity of existence." But there is an important divergence in the manner …

Jeremy Bentham And The Development Of English Utilitarianism, James William Gepson Oct 1965

Jeremy Bentham And The Development Of English Utilitarianism, James William Gepson

Student Work

The eighteenth century in one sense may be viewed as the second Hundred Years War. The century saw France and England continue their struggle for colonial empire and commercial advantage. William Pitt the Elder (1706-1778) led England to victory in the mid-century conflict primarily through his use of English see Power.1 The cost of the conflict laid great burdens on the English taxpayer and English statesmen demanded that the colonies begin to bear a share of the cost of imperial defense. Such a policy firmly applied by Lord Townsend, led to the American Revolution which began a partial reversal …

The Armed Forces In Argentine Politics To 1930, José Ferrer Sep 1965

The Armed Forces In Argentine Politics To 1930, José Ferrer

History ETDs

In this introductory chapter, the Lautaro Lodge is presented as a significant precedent in politico-military relations, a precedent never to be forgotten by future officers'corps. Other nineteenth century military lodges are briefly described to show that political life in Argentina has always been shared by civilian and military alike. The old armies of gaucho militia led by caudillo generals were an instrument of local and national political power. After the battle of Monte Caseros, in 1852, the national army was recreated, made stronger by military reforms, and used effectively to eliminate caudillism, anarchy, separatism, and to establish the definite unification …

The Treaty Of Fond Du Lac: August 5, 1826, Gerald H. Hubert Sep 1965

The Treaty Of Fond Du Lac: August 5, 1826, Gerald H. Hubert

Master's Essays (1922 - )

In a treaty with the Sioux, the Chippewas and several other Indian tribes: at Prairie du Chien in August, 1825", the United States attempted to establish boundaries between the various tribes which were represented, thus cutting down on the age-old wars between them. Article 12 of that treaty provided that a council should be held with the Chippewas upon Lake Superior some time during the year 1826. This stipulation was inserted at the request of' the Chippewa chiefs in order that they have an opportunity to explain to the warriors the obligations and advantages of that treaty.1 The Chippewa tribe …
