Gestalten, Layeh A. Bock Jan 1967

Gestalten, Layeh A. Bock

English Language and Literature ETDs

Four years ago I found myself ready to begin writing poetry. Like Denise Levertov, who once described herself in retrospect as “twenty-four-going-on-sixteen,” I was a late budder, (The few bits of scribbling I have left from earlier years are ample proof that my late start was the best course for me.) Charles Tomlinson was teaching an "advanced creative writing course" in poetry at the University of New Mexico at that time, and I studied with him. The following year, I was able to study under Robert Creeley in a course with the same title and number. I feel very lucky …

The Mutual Defense Assistance Program, 1951-1955, Edward N. Harper Jan 1967

The Mutual Defense Assistance Program, 1951-1955, Edward N. Harper

History ETDs

General Matthew B. Ridgeway said in 1947 that programs of the United States government abroad consist of military, economic and political elements that are inseparably related to each other. A military program, he explained, may serve other than military ends. The validity of the General’s observation is substantiated by the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP) for Latin America. Under the program the United States signed bilateral Mutual Defense Assistance (MDA) Agreements with twelve Latin American states between 1951 and 1955. These stipulated that the United States would provide the second party with grant or free military assistance in order to …

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson Jan 1967

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show how various plays written in the 1930's reflected economic, political, religious, social, psychological, moral and ethical attitudes of the depression years. To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.

Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools Jan 1967

Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools

Honors Theses

The condition of Virginia in 1710 was depressed, both politically and economically. A royal colony, Virginia nevertheless had been establishing her own common laws and "ancient" practices, at the the same time that English control was becoming increasingly inefficient. The situation worsened during the administrations of Edmund Andros and Francis Nicholson and reach a minor climax during the four-year interregnum which began in 1706 and lasted until Spotswood assumed leadership of the government in 1710.

During this period when lack of a royal governor placed colonial affairs in the hands of the Virginia Council and its president, the work of …

Wittgenstein's Concept Of Truth In The Philosophical Investigations, Robert B. Labbe Jan 1967

Wittgenstein's Concept Of Truth In The Philosophical Investigations, Robert B. Labbe

Philosophy ETDs

Either Wittgenstein did not care to study the “problems of truth and falsehood” or he did not return to these problems in his later philosophy. Whatever may have been the reason, an examination of his later writings beginning with the discussions contained in The Blue and Brown books reveals that Wittgenstein did not investigate the problems of truth and falsehood systematically. There is no where stated a theory of truth, but only scattered remarks as to “truth” might be considered. The lack of anything beyond the few remarks in the Philosophical Investigations and the Remarks on the Foundations of mathematics, …

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans Jan 1967

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans

Honors Theses

In the late nineteen-thirties "isolationism" determined American attitudes toward Europe. Basically, the term, used to describe that period, refers to the beliefs which decreed that the United States should have no part in foreign quarrels.

This paper will attempt to analyze the feelings of the majority of Americans. Many men counseled non-involvement for many reasons, and extremists ranged from the Catholic priest, Father Coughlin, a man with definite pro-German sympathies, to Charles A. Lindberg, who thought that Hitler could not be beaten. Attention here will not be directed at these extremely small fringe groups, but at the "average" American, as …

Slavery In Colonial Massachusetts, Thomas A. Malloy Iii Jan 1967

Slavery In Colonial Massachusetts, Thomas A. Malloy Iii

Masters Theses

1. Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to trace the history of slavery in colonial Massachusetts. Massachusetts was by no means an originator of this institution, for the practice of slavery predates written history. Its origins probably stem from wars of conquest in which captives were used for sacrificial purposes, but as prehistoric man adopted a settled way of life, he found it practical to spare his captives' lives and enslave them. The conqueror's justification for enslavement of his captives was that he had spared their lives, and thus they were at his disposal. In a sense, one could …

A Geographical Analysis Of The Emergence And Subsequent Disappearance Of The Cotton Industry In The Virgin River Basin (1856-1910), Brooks Kent Hanson Jan 1967

A Geographical Analysis Of The Emergence And Subsequent Disappearance Of The Cotton Industry In The Virgin River Basin (1856-1910), Brooks Kent Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

At one time the cotton industry in Utah was a flourishing activity. Many pioneer farmers were engaged in the growing of this staple for the purpose of providing much needed cotton for the Territory of Utah before the days of railroads and highways. After the favorable climatic conditions for agriculture in Utah's Dixie were discovered, leaders of the Latter-day Saint Church made plans for the growing of many fruits and vegetables of the temperate zone. Of these, cotton received by far the most attention, as a domestic source of this raw material was at one time vital to the well …

The entire body or Flannery O'Connor's published fiction can be found in two volumes, One, a Signet paperback called Three by Flannery O'Connor, contains her two novels and first short story collection, The other is the posthumous volume of short stories, Everything that Rises Must Converge. All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

At 9:30 P.M. on May 30, 1961, most United States citizens were enjoying the closing hours of a Memorial Day holiday. About this same time in the Dominican Republic an event was taking shape which was to alter greatly the lives of the people of that island nation. Rafael L. Trujillo, the dictator of the Dominican Republic, was riding with his chauffeur, Captain Socorro de la Cruz, along the highway from Santo Domingo to where the dictator's mistress waited in San Cristobal. Seemingly out of nowhere, a 1958 Chevrolet pulled alongside the limousine, its four occupants brandishing an assortment of …
