A Graduate Recital Report, Jean Madsen May 1967

A Graduate Recital Report, Jean Madsen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In preparing for the recital many challenges were presented. It was quite revealing to learn how much can be forgotten and how many incorrect habits can be developed in a long period of time without continuous study. Many hours of work and continuous effort have been devoted in an attempt to overcome these seemingly insurmountable problems.

A Graduate Recital Report, W. Mcloyd Ericksen May 1967

A Graduate Recital Report, W. Mcloyd Ericksen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It has been interesting to note the development of the instrumental program in Utah in the past twenty-five years. Instrumentalists are in demand for a great number of organizations which perform in various capacities from the sports spectaculars to symphonic band and orchestras. Furthermore, the personnel of these groups are usually trained as soloists.

Much of this improvement has been due to the efforts of dedicated musicians, teachers who are affiliated with institutions of higher learning. They have marshalled the resources of the colleges and universities to upgrade the level of music education. They have trained people to train others …

Hermann Rauschning And The German Migration., Paula Bloomberg Apr 1967

Hermann Rauschning And The German Migration., Paula Bloomberg

History ETDs

The variety of motives and expectations that led German citizens to leave their homeland after Adolf Hitler’s ascension to power in 11933 has led historians to shun a comprehensive treatment of the German emigration. So great was this variety that a noted German journalist and former member of the emigration, Karl O. Paetel, observer that such a treatment is impossible and that the German emigration can only be understood from a study of individual cases. The present writer disagrees with Paetel’s assertion, but does agree that a treatment of the entire German emigration is a monumental task that will require …

A Comparative Study Of Antonin Artuad's Play Les Cenci, Anne-Marie Denes Apr 1967

A Comparative Study Of Antonin Artuad's Play Les Cenci, Anne-Marie Denes

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to present a historical and critical introduction to Antonin Artaud’s play Les Cenci (1935). The first part of the paper will consist, therefore, of a comparative study of four versions of the story of Beatrice Cenci (1577-1599) and her family. One is the historical account as related by John Addington Symonds in his book Renaissance in Italy. The second is the legendary account as it emerges from Stendhal’s translation from an old Italian chronicle dated, according to Stendhal, September 14, 1499 – three days after Beatrice’s execution. The third is Percy Bysshe Shelley’s tragedy …

Birth And Rebirth As A Cultural Symbol, Roberta Foss Apr 1967

Birth And Rebirth As A Cultural Symbol, Roberta Foss

Dissertations and Theses

The corpus of this thesis study consists of a group of monoprints and paintings as well as a written commentary intended as their accompaniment.

The investigation of such a topic as Birth and Rebirth has involved a concern with the existence of symbology meaningful to the topic. The term culture can be clarified to mean both the artist in particular as well as culture in a collective sense. The possibilities of the topic semantically would involve an essayist’s approach. This thesis is not a pictorial essay. Birth and Rebirth as terms evoke images which a painter can simply treat as …

Chinese Communist Minority Relations, Henry G. Mccleary Apr 1967

Chinese Communist Minority Relations, Henry G. Mccleary

History ETDs

The leaders of the People’s Republic of China desire that China be a strongly unified polity possessed of a well organized industrial base. The minority peoples are expected to become part of both political and productive societal functions. Minority discontent would be a serious problem because it could threaten the long term plan for total integration of a unified, disciplined and highly industrialized China.

An Inquiry Into The Relationship Between Holiness And Physical Health, Darwin Grimm

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem of this study was to determine the relationship of the human body to sin, and from this (1) to ascertain the relationship between the Biblical doctrine of holiness and physical health; ( 2) to enunciate the doctrine of physical health that is implicit in the Biblical doctrine of holiness; and ( 3) to provide practical instruction for the preparation of physical deficiencies and the maintenance of vital health.

The Suicidal Person And Pastoral Care, Donald Wunrow Apr 1967

The Suicidal Person And Pastoral Care, Donald Wunrow

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper comprises an examination of the problem of suicide, particularly the dynamics operative in the potentially suicidal individual, and the dynamics operative in a pastoral approach to suicide prevention. Attention will be given to the recognition of presuicidal behavior and to the role which the pastor assumes to prevent the individual from acting out his self-destructive communication.

Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell Apr 1967

Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell

Master's Theses

A general study of Marlowe 's cosmology may by no means be original, for numerous critics have mentioned the subject in varying degrees; however, there is a wide disparity or opinion concerning the relative importance of the subject in relation to the playwright. This study is not exhaustive; it is significant, however, because it attempts to prove by means of biographical and historical backgrounds the idea that Marlowe had an intellect that was always "climbing after knowledge infinite."

In this study there are two obvious omissions: the plays Dido, Queen of Carthage, and The Massacre at Paris. …

Herbert's Household Imagery, Christina Hillquist Halsted Apr 1967

Herbert's Household Imagery, Christina Hillquist Halsted

Master's Theses

The apparent simplicity of George Herbert's poetry has caused much comment and much misunderstanding of both the man and his poetry. The popular nineteenth-century picture of Herbert as the simple, tranquil country priest is being discarded, however, as twentieth-century scholars of metaphysical poetry re-exa mine both the works and life of George Herbert and find little simple about his life and a magnificent craftsmanship in his poetry.

Both the simplicity and the depth of Herbert's poetry lie in his imagery, in which concrete everyday objects and actions become high abstractions usually difficult to express. Of course, the presentation of abstractions …

Alexander Moseley, Editor Of The Richmond Whig, Harrison Moseley Ethridge Apr 1967

Alexander Moseley, Editor Of The Richmond Whig, Harrison Moseley Ethridge

Master's Theses

The following pages are the study or a man, Alexander Moseley, and of the newspaper with which he was intimately connected for forty-tive years

There are, admittedly gaps in the study. The period of Know-Knothingism is omitted, for example, because no substantial material could be found to show his associations during the era. At other times, much more material could be found concerning Moseley's personal life than on his public life. And, of course, often it is difficult to prove that an editorial opinion was necessarily his.

Alexander Moseley's career was unique, however, in the great span of history it …

Some General Observations On Mass Composition In The Renaissance, Charles Lathan Hill Apr 1967

Some General Observations On Mass Composition In The Renaissance, Charles Lathan Hill

Honors Theses

As seen in the six Masses studied in this paper, the composition of a Mass presented a Renaissance composer with both problems and opportunities. Some of the problems encountered, as we have seen, were the clear declamation of the text, effective word-setting, the achievement of contrast and variety throught hte use of many devices, and an efffective means of unifying the work as a whole. The Mass cycle, in addition to enjoying veneration as a tradition, and depsite the problems which it held for a composer, offered him the chance to express himself and demonstrate his mastery of musical skills …

New Mexico Labor Legislation, 1912-1949, Haven Tobias Mar 1967

New Mexico Labor Legislation, 1912-1949, Haven Tobias

History ETDs

A study of New Mexico labor legislation is a necessity because it fills a void in New Mexico labor history. There is a competent essay analyzing a selection of New Mexico’s labor laws, but it is not comprehensive and therefore lacks substantive statements about or perspective on the development of this legislation. New Mexico labor laws are also occasionally mentioned in studies of state labor legislation, but they are mentioned in catalogue fashion, and therefore serve as aids to the historian, rather than as historical studies per se. These sources do not explore the historical patterns reveled in the intent …

The Art Of Living: A Preliminary Investigation Of Dr. Johnson's Attitude Toward Learning, Involving Primarily The Rambler, The Idler, And The Adventurer., Nancy C. Cotton Mar 1967

The Art Of Living: A Preliminary Investigation Of Dr. Johnson's Attitude Toward Learning, Involving Primarily The Rambler, The Idler, And The Adventurer., Nancy C. Cotton

English Language and Literature ETDs

In the Rambler, more than in the Idler and the Adventurer, Dr. Johnson continually recurs to the subject of learning. If he does not devote an entire essay to an aspect of learning, he may use an exemplary man of letters or a scholarly allusion to illustrate another unrelated subject. Profuse and disparate as these essays and illustrations are, there is enough material to theorize constructively about Johnson's attitude toward learning. This is very often that of an eighteenth-century religious humanist and a moral satirist. He sees the necessity for a revivification of the traditional ideals of learning, those of …

The Thematic Structure Of The Third Book Of Matthew, Michael Gruel Mar 1967

The Thematic Structure Of The Third Book Of Matthew, Michael Gruel

Master of Divinity Thesis

The scope of this paper is somewhat obvious from its title. It will deal with the Third Book of Matthew. This is a title used to designate that which most commentators have set apart as the third major section of Matthew's Gospel, chapters 11 to 13:52. Since it may be necessary to lay a little groundwork, part of the second chapter will deal with the structure of Matthew, specifically that which outlines the Gospel on the basis of its five major sections.

The writer assumes the position of a conservative evangelical Protestant.

The Concept Of Doubt In The New Testament, Charles Lentner Mar 1967

The Concept Of Doubt In The New Testament, Charles Lentner

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this research paper is to present the New Testament concept of doubt. Such a study necessitates a detailed examination of the various words that directly or indirectly mean or refer to doubt. By the word "doubt" is not meant an intellectual inquiry in search fora greater understanding—every Christian must do this to grow in the knowledge of his faith. Rather, by "doubt" is meant a wavering between faith and unbelief wherein one’s reason and personal desires try to be autonomous. Some Greek words can be translated directly into the word “doubt." If only these words were studied, …

The Cursing Of The Barren Fig Tree (Mark 11:2-14), Ronald Lehenbauer Feb 1967

The Cursing Of The Barren Fig Tree (Mark 11:2-14), Ronald Lehenbauer

Master of Divinity Thesis

The main purpose of this paper, however, is to attempt to answer the third question listed above; it is hoped that in the process of the discussion solutions to some of the other difficulties will also suggest themselves. Concentrating on the Markan account, we will proceed first by discussing various answers that have been suggested to the question: what was the original purpose of the story? Secondly, the text will be examined exegetically and its context in Mark will be scrutinized in an effort to determine which of the suggested answers best accords with the evidence. Because of the scope …

Reality As A Basis For Religious Education, Donald Jerke Feb 1967

Reality As A Basis For Religious Education, Donald Jerke

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is the purpose of the author to present in detail the theological, philosophical, and educational presuppositions and understandings of the Educational Center and indicate their application to the Center's unique educational method. In Chapter Two those concepts are presented and terms defined which express the Center's view of existence, its religious dimensions, its relationship to the Christian faith, and its implications for the educational task of the Church. Chapter Three presents an overview of the Center's methodology and its application to the structure of particular courses and the development of educational programs at the parish level. In Chapter Four …
