A Philosophical And Critical Analysis Of My Work In Painting And Drawing, James Robert Bolton
A Philosophical And Critical Analysis Of My Work In Painting And Drawing, James Robert Bolton
Art & Art History ETDs
The primary concern in my work is woman as an idealized goddess whose perfect beauty engenders the attributes of timelessness, sterility, and death. My ideas, although first encountered in literature, found visual realization in the images of the Vogue woman and the Renaissance Madonna. Both of these goddess figures are paradoxical in that they are real persons idealized and placed in a queenly context, and they consequently form a tension between illusion and reality. The historic setting for the Renaissance Madonna has three direct parallels to my work: 1) shallow space which characterizes an illusory stage-like setting, 2) symmetry which …
The North Atlantic Blockading Squadron Under Admiral David D. Porter, 1864-1865, Richard C. Hindley
The North Atlantic Blockading Squadron Under Admiral David D. Porter, 1864-1865, Richard C. Hindley
History ETDs
When the Civil War broke out in April, 1861, it pitted against one another two nations, or sides, which were different not only politically and ideologically, but also economically. The United States was a rising industrial power, with factories, a railroad network, and an expanding urban working class. The Confederate States of America was an agricultural, rural area, with few industries and an antiquated labor system based on chattel slavery. In order to wage a modern war the Confederacy would have to import arms and equipment from abroad and export cotton to pay for these supplies. To keep the South …
The Study Of The Real Presence In The Ante-Nicene Fatherswith Some Lutheran Comparisons, Paul Pahl
The Study Of The Real Presence In The Ante-Nicene Fatherswith Some Lutheran Comparisons, Paul Pahl
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
A study of the nature of the eucharistic presence of .Christ in the writings of the early Fathers would therefore seem to have considerable practical value and should also help in forming a sound opinion and conclusions about the nature of this evidence.
In the present study it is also intended to examine Luther's views on the matter under discussion especially where they impinge on viewpoints and ideas set forth in the writings of the Fathers under consideration. Wherever possible reference will also be made to the Lutheran Confessions.
It is intended to examine and evaluate the patristic evidence up …
1 Corinthians 15_3b-5: Primitive Christian Proclamation, Jerome Schoel
1 Corinthians 15_3b-5: Primitive Christian Proclamation, Jerome Schoel
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Therefore, for matters of limitation, it shall be the purpose of this paper to examine one specific text in the Pauline corpus in which Paul himself cites something he had received. In 1 Corinthians 15:3b-5 Paul describes the gospel which the Corinthians came to believe and by which they were saved. Does this passage tell us anything about Paul's relationship with the apostles in Jerusalem? What does it tell us of the chief emphases in the gospel Paul had received?

The Historical Deveopment Of The Postcommunion Collects For The Sundays And Some Feast Days Of The Church Year, Leo La Fontaine
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This study surveys the historical development of the post-communion collects according to the Sundays and some feast days of the Church year.

Motival Structure Of Susannah, A Music Drama By Carlisle Floyd, Sue Ellen Mcmurray
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was (1) to locate and identify the various musical motives within the opera Susannah; (2) to point out the significance of each motive; (3) to examine the transformations of each motive; and (4) to demonstrate how the motive structure relates to both the visible series of events and to the psychological progress of the opera.
The Development Of A Series Of Cast Metal Sculpture Using The Lost Wax Process, Ernest C. Reynolds
The Development Of A Series Of Cast Metal Sculpture Using The Lost Wax Process, Ernest C. Reynolds
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this problem is twofold. First, I feel impelled to make a personal statement regarding my philosophies about form, and secondly to explore the possibility of relating negative and positive form as a sculptural unity in bronze casting.
Holistic Evangelism As An Approach To Navaho Peyotism, Gary H. Harding
Holistic Evangelism As An Approach To Navaho Peyotism, Gary H. Harding
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Seventh-day Adventist evangelism has attempted to treat the whole man--physically, mentally, spiritually. Because the desired results of evangelism have been less than ideal in many areas of the world, a review of the basic concepts of Seventh-day Adventism (epitomized in the writings of Ellen G. White, whom Seventh-day Adventists consider to have written under inspiration) was made.
This review has tried to clarify the emphasis placed on the necessity of a complete gospel approach to meet the physical, intellectual and social needs of man as well as the religious. Sin is seen to be a loss of the wholeness that …
A Study Of The Mary Lester Field Collection Of Spanish Colonial Silver, Leona Mae Boylan
A Study Of The Mary Lester Field Collection Of Spanish Colonial Silver, Leona Mae Boylan
Art & Art History ETDs
The purpose of this study is to examine the body of reference and source material presently available relative to Spanish Colonial silver in New Mexico, and to apply it specifically to the problem of describing, classifying, and dating the pieces in the Mary Lester Field Collection of Spanish Colonial Silver, University Art Museum of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
A second purpose is to explore the idea that an identifiable provincial style may exist within the general classification of Spanish Colonial silver, especially in relationship to the American Southwest. Critical stylistic analysis will be applied to individual pieces …

The Vestal Virgins In Ancient Rome: A Study Of The Office, Doyne W. Swinford
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to trace the history of the office of the Vestal Virgins in Rome from its founding in 715 B.C. to its abolition under Theodosius, A.D. 394, and to discuss the qualifications, selection, training, discipline, dress, duties, and privileges of its members. The author has used the classical authors of Greece and Rome as a basis for the study. The research pertaining to the Vestal Virgins, principally that by German, French, and English scholars, has also been utilized.
Man, The World, And Art, Richard Arthur Guidotti
Man, The World, And Art, Richard Arthur Guidotti
Philosophy ETDs
Accusations of failure to face social responsibility may be leveled against two groups of intellectuals. One group is the philosophers; the other the artists. Both are creators. To both is entrusted to a large extent the formation of society and the construction of media through which all men are enabled to express their hopes and desires.
The Cotton Textile Industry Of New Spain, Robert P. Turner Jr.
The Cotton Textile Industry Of New Spain, Robert P. Turner Jr.
Latin American Studies ETDs
The historical “facts” involved in the formation and existence of New Spain are not obscure. The conquering race represented a nation, Spain, that had arrived at unity only recently. It was a nation that, having solved serious internal problems of civil disorder, church dominance, and foreign rivalry, was strongly motivated and supremely confident when faced with the challenge of implanting her society upon another soil.
The Preservation Of Art, Architecture And Artifacts Of Trampas, New Mexico, Louise A. Harris
The Preservation Of Art, Architecture And Artifacts Of Trampas, New Mexico, Louise A. Harris
Art & Art History ETDs
Trampas, a small village in mountainous northern New Mexico, is extremely well-preserved, both architecturally and culturally. This excellent state of preservation results from its isolated position. Trampas has retained the character of a Spanish-Mexican town of the nineteenth century, a rarity even in New Mexico which has not yet been subjected to the massive industrialization found in other parts of the United States.
Lebaron Bradford Prince, Chief Justice And Governor Of New Mexico Territory, 1879-1893, Walter John Donlon
Lebaron Bradford Prince, Chief Justice And Governor Of New Mexico Territory, 1879-1893, Walter John Donlon
History ETDs
Clarence E. Carter, esteemed editor of the Territorial Papers of the United States, has aptly described U. S. territorial history as the "Dark Age of American Historiography," and rightly so. In the case of New Mexico, some portions of its long, sixty-two year existence as a Territory--from approval of the Organic Act in 1850 to acquisition of statehood in 1912--have been adequately covered, particularly the years of the Civil War. Other aspects, notably statehood attempts, Indian lands and related problems, private land grants, and similar events, have, of late, likewise come under the scrutiny of historians. However, until the appearance …

An Initial Evaluation Of A Sixth Grade Group's Attitude Toward Art Using A Semantic Differential Instrument, Nancy Carnohan
An Initial Evaluation Of A Sixth Grade Group's Attitude Toward Art Using A Semantic Differential Instrument, Nancy Carnohan
Art & Art History ETDs
The purpose of this descriptive research was twofold. The investigator wanted to test objectively the attitudes of the preadolescent child toward art. (The term ''preadolescent ', as well as other terms associated with and peculiar to the field of the present research paper, are defined in the glossary of terms on page 164-166.) One of the main problems was finding a valid objective test. Research was done in the field of the semantic differential instrument. After long and intensive study, it was decided to use this instrument on a preadolescent group. The results of the data obtained in this investigation …

Secondly, the results of a questionnaire on continuing education, sent at random to pastors in the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, will be presented. Next, the implications of the results of the questionnaire will be drawn, and, where possible, correlated with the opinions of the educators. Finally, from these implications and comparisons, suggestions will be made, where possible, fora program of continuing education for pastors within the Lutheran …
George Iii In The Pennsylvania Press: A Study In Changing Opinions, 1760-1776, Robert D. Fiala
George Iii In The Pennsylvania Press: A Study In Changing Opinions, 1760-1776, Robert D. Fiala
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study is an attempt to utilize the popular newspaper and pamphlet press to trace the growing estrangement between the monarch and his subjects before July, 1776. At what point did Americans abandon their hope in George III? What factors contributed to their final conclusion that the responsibility for the estrangement of the colonies from the mother country wets the king’s? Because of the vast amount of available material and also because of the widespread reprinting of newspaper articles and pamphlets, the writer has limited his study to the press of one colony, Pennsylvania. He has examined most of the …
Blake And Yeats: A Comparative Study, Martin J. Gliserman
Blake And Yeats: A Comparative Study, Martin J. Gliserman
Senior Scholar Papers
Although my project began as a comparative study, it ended up as being the separate study of two poets. But even in approaching the poets separately, I have found that their points of views do come together at important places as I have shown in the final chapter (Blake and Yeats: Crossing Visions). The poets converge most strongly, from my point of view on the issue of sexuality. Both feel that a body-soul duality is a great reason for man's inhumanity to man.
Primitive Art As It Relates To Contemporary Design, Sandra Miller
Primitive Art As It Relates To Contemporary Design, Sandra Miller
Senior Scholar Papers
For the most part, my project has been of an individually rewarding nature due to an extensive amount of reading and studio work. My paper functions as the major means of communication of my own experiences and findings. It is an attempt to share with others the ideas which I have found particularly stimulating and worthwhile during the course of the year. In other words, the written portion does not intend to summarize all of the phases of primitive art which I have studied during the past year; rather, it is indicative of the type of pursuit with which I …
Art Of Goya As A Significant Reflection Of His Time, William Post
Art Of Goya As A Significant Reflection Of His Time, William Post
Senior Scholar Papers
This thesis examines the story of how Goya came to be the artist he was and of the times which made him what he was, and which he so well mirrored. Francisco Goya y Lucientes is a remarkable figure in the history of art. Rarely has an artist arisen from such a cultural vacuum; rarely has an artist done so much to establish a cultural reputation for his country; rarely has an artist reflected so accurately the spirit of his time; and rare is the artist who has such an important influence on all the significant art of the future.
The Effect Of Two Art Product Evaluative Systems Upon Aesthetic Design Sensitivity And Personal Art Attitude, James J. Srubek
The Effect Of Two Art Product Evaluative Systems Upon Aesthetic Design Sensitivity And Personal Art Attitude, James J. Srubek
Art & Art History ETDs
The aims and objectives of art education as an educational discipline have been discussed and argued since the formation of the Committee in Drawing by the National Education Association in 1899 (Lanier, 1964, p. 31). The situation is no better today than it was then. At a seminar in art education for research and curriculum development held at the Pennsylvania State University in the Summer of 1966, the leading minds in the fields of art education, psychology, research, the fine arts, art criticism, and education in general, met to discuss the current status of art education. In a summary statement …

The Church's Approach To The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents Through An Institutional Setting, Leonard Laetsch
The Church's Approach To The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents Through An Institutional Setting, Leonard Laetsch
Bachelor of Divinity
Christian concern for one's fellow man finds its roots in the example for all Christian living, in Christ Himself. As He was vitally concerned about the welfare of His contemporaries, so Christians through-out the ages have tried to reflect a similar concern for their contemporaries. Christians desire that all men come to a knowledge of Christ Jesus as the Savior and Redeemer of the world, Who brings a new way of life both in this world and in the world to come. Whenever a follower of Christ sees acts of delinquency, he becomes concerned because he recognizes them as results …
What Are The Contrasting Contributions To The Problem Of Guilt In Pastoral Counseling Of Client-Centered Therapy And Reality Therapy, Marc Kluender
What Are The Contrasting Contributions To The Problem Of Guilt In Pastoral Counseling Of Client-Centered Therapy And Reality Therapy, Marc Kluender
Bachelor of Divinity
This research paper is an investigation of the following question: What are the contrasting contributions to the problem of guilt in pastoral counseling of client-centered therapy and reality therapy? It is important for the reader to know why the area of guilt was chosen for study. First of all, guilt is a universal problem of mankind. Paul Tournier says, "It is abundantly clear that no man lives free of guilt. Guilt is universal." This does not mean that modern man is constantly asking about his guilt
The Significance Of Hebrews 1:1-2a For The Method And Message Of 1:1 – 10:18 Toward A More Efficacious Ministry, Charles Dube
The Significance Of Hebrews 1:1-2a For The Method And Message Of 1:1 – 10:18 Toward A More Efficacious Ministry, Charles Dube
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper, however, is an attempt to make some sense of the message of Hebrews and its method of dealing with OT material. The opening sentence of the book has been used as the key to this operation. Thus a formal statement of the question with which we shall be dealing is: "What is the significance of Hebrews 1:1-2a for the method and message of 1:1-10:18?"
The Doctrine Of Man In Contemporary Existential Psychiatry And Its Adequacy In Christian Pastoral Counseling, Thomas Hammond
The Doctrine Of Man In Contemporary Existential Psychiatry And Its Adequacy In Christian Pastoral Counseling, Thomas Hammond
Bachelor of Divinity
It would indeed by an exhausting search to try to trace the social and historical origins of the various therapeutic disciplines and far beyond the scope of this paper. This paper is here concerned only with existentialism and its influence upon the contemporary psychiatric scene in a way described by Pattison above.
Ezekiel 40-48, Gerald White
Ezekiel 40-48, Gerald White
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The author's interest in the book· of Ezekiel and its problems was kindled in a previous study involving an exegetical analysis of six passages selected from the first thirty-nine chapters of the book. These problems may be classified under the headings of (1) authorship and authenticity, and ( 2) interpretation. The study now proposed involves the investigation of these literary and theological problems in order to determine (1) to what extent the passage under consideration may be attributed to the prophet and how much must be ascribed to one or more editors, (2) the relation between this section of the …

A Study Of Applications Used In The Sermons Of The Concordia Pulpit Of The Years 1955-1964, Erwin Kolb
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The reason for the interest in undertaking a study in homiletics has two sources, which are, however, intimately related. The first source of interest grows out of a concern for the church and the second out of practical work as a pastor in that church. The first grows out of charges that the church is irrelevant, that its message and program are suited only to the stained glass shelter of its buildings, and the second from a desire to preach and teach a Gospel message which is relevant, timely, and effective. A further explanation of these two sources of interest, …

The Day Of Worship For The Christian Church, David Loren Patterson
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
THE PROBLEM UNDER CONSIDERATION
"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy... but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God .... " (Ex. 20;8, 1 Oa). "Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and years. I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain" (Gal. 4:10,11).
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The problem seen. Above are given two Scripture passages, one from the Old Testament and the other from the New Testament. The former is part of a command to observe a day, "to keep it holy," while the latter …
