The Everett Massacre: A Study Of The Industrial Workers Of The World, Arthur H. Belch Jul 1967

The Everett Massacre: A Study Of The Industrial Workers Of The World, Arthur H. Belch

Graduate Student Research Papers

The Everett Massacre serves not only as an example of harassment of organized labor but also as an example of the violence which typified the I. W.W. movement in its attempt to win concessions from an unwilling industry. In order to understand the historical significance of this event and to place it in perspective, it is necessary to understand the growth of the I. W.W. philosophy beginning with the Western Federation of Miners and the creation of the I. W.W. In addition, two incidents serve to illustrate the mental atmosphere in which the I. W.W. operated and public reaction to …

Pope As A Maker Of Ballads, Mary M. Dossin Jul 1967

Pope As A Maker Of Ballads, Mary M. Dossin

English Theses & Dissertations

The intriguing sub-title of Albert B. Friedman's book, The Balled Revival: Studies in the influence of Popular on Sophisticated Poetry, points to the crux of my thesis: was the most sophisticated poet of a very sophisticated literary age seriously influenced in his work by the popular ballads enjoyed by the common people? h brief but comprehensive examination of the status of the ballad in the early eighteenth century will show that ballads were at that time more widely enjoyed and admired than has often been thought. The second chapter will demonstrate, through a study of statements by Pope and …

Humanist - Post-Humanist Painting, Jon A. Petruchyk Jun 1967

Humanist - Post-Humanist Painting, Jon A. Petruchyk

Art & Art History ETDs

This essay purports to examine humanism as an historically dated basis of existence in western culture. It will discuss the beginnings, the development, and finally the capitulation of humanist modes of expression using, specifically, their manifestation in the field of art. It will take as its primary example the art of painting. As an introduction, a brief discussion of humanist philosophy may serve to set the stage for a closer analysis of art.

Toward An Understanding Of The Later Philosophy Of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Stephen Amdur Jun 1967

Toward An Understanding Of The Later Philosophy Of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Stephen Amdur

Philosophy ETDs

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to understanding the later philosophy (1930-1951) of Ludwig Wittgenstein is that, unlike his earlier work, the later work has no explicit organization. I have attempted to show a way around this obstacle by showing the legitimacy of imposing upon the later work the following order:

First, I have taken his later work to stand opposed to the position of "traditional epistemology." I have attempted to show how from traditional epistemology the "empiricist theory of meaning" stems, and how from that theory of meaning stem certain familiar problems of academic philosophy.

Second, I have attempted to show …

Virginia And The Continental Association, 1774-1776, Larry G. Bowman Jun 1967

Virginia And The Continental Association, 1774-1776, Larry G. Bowman

History ETDs

Throughout this dissertation the reader will notice the author frequently uses the term “conservative” and “radical”. While the author realizes that these terms are often used and misused, it is impossible to avoid them in a discussion of the political climate of Virginia during the years before the American Revolution. One reason which compels the author to employ them is that the Virginians found the same means helpful to describe the varying political viewpoints of their contemporaries. Whenever the terms conservative and radical appear they refer exclusively to members of the Whig faction. The term conservative should never be mistaken …

Monsignor John A. Ryan: American Social Gospeller: 1900-1945, Paul Albert Gopaul Jun 1967

Monsignor John A. Ryan: American Social Gospeller: 1900-1945, Paul Albert Gopaul

American Studies ETDs

With the publication of "A Country Without Strikes" in 1900, describing the enactment of a system of compulsory arbitration in New Zealand, John Augustine Ryan, thirty-five years old, a Roman Catholic priest, student at the Catholic University of America, and middlewestern-reared Populist, joined the lists of the Social Gospellers who were trying in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to bring America to grips with an industrial and economic situation that left 71 per cent of the wealth in the hands of 9 per cent of the families. This condition threatened to scar the United States permanently with a …

Stendhal Et La Musique, Rafael Valdés Camín Jun 1967

Stendhal Et La Musique, Rafael Valdés Camín

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The "Gente De CôR" In The Fiction Of Jorge Amado, William E. Mcdavid Jun 1967

The "Gente De CôR" In The Fiction Of Jorge Amado, William E. Mcdavid

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

It is the primary purpose of this study to examine the part played by the “nego” and “gente de côr as an influence and subject in the friction of Jorge Amado. To do this one must first understand the social and cultural role of the colored element in contemporary Brazil. National as well as foreign sociologists and anthropologists have methodologically researched this area. Their conclusions provide a helpful and necessary perspective for this study. This blended socio-literary approach will provide, not necessarily a revolutionary view, but, hopefully, a more profound understanding of the works of Brazil’s greatest fiction writer Jorge …

Julian Hawthorne, Novelist Of The Real And The Supernatural: A Study Of Bressant, Archibald Malmaison, And A Fool Of Nature, Martha Mayes Park Jun 1967

Julian Hawthorne, Novelist Of The Real And The Supernatural: A Study Of Bressant, Archibald Malmaison, And A Fool Of Nature, Martha Mayes Park

English Language and Literature ETDs

Excerpt from introduction:

Hawthorne's attitude toward his own fiction was usually casual and commercial. He wrote rapidly, sometimes producing several books a year. His first two novels, Bressant and Idolatry, show promise that was never achieved. He baffled the contemporary critics, for while his work was artistically superior to that of Edgar Fawcett and E. P. Roe, he used melodrama and supernatural machinery appealing to their followers. And he could not be tagged as a realist, despite his use of realistic and naturalistic elements, because of all the romantic trappings. Nor did he venture often as far as Francis …

Venus Looking Glas: A Study Of Books Iii And Iv Of The Faerie Queene., Enid Howarth Jun 1967

Venus Looking Glas: A Study Of Books Iii And Iv Of The Faerie Queene., Enid Howarth

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation relies heavily upon two assumptions: first, that the allegorical habit of mind pervaded the Renaissance in England (as well, of course, as in Italy) as a viable and unquestioned inheritance of the Middle Ages; second, that a close reading of the text of a Renaissance writer (in this case, the two central books of Spenser’s The Faerie Queene) can illuminate various facets of this habit of mind and shed light on some of the intellectually accepted modes of thought which pervade the whole work as well as other works from the same period. The method is more that …

Problems Related To Selected Spanish Colonial Paintings In New Mexico, Louberta Ann Culley Jun 1967

Problems Related To Selected Spanish Colonial Paintings In New Mexico, Louberta Ann Culley

Art & Art History ETDs

The Spaniards were originally attracted to New Mexico by the prospect of finding great wealth. In the early sixteenth century, it was rumored that there were seven cities in the north with riches equaling that of the Aztec and Inca civilizations. These rumors were further exaggerated by Cabeza de Vaca and the survivor of the Narvaez expedition when they returned to Mexico City in 1536 and by the reports to Fray Marcos de Niza who led an exploration into Zuni territory in western New Mexico in 1S39. Coronado, however, gave a more accurate and prosaic description of the region after …

Civil-Military Relations In Venezuela: 1935-1959., Winfield J. Burggraaff Jun 1967

Civil-Military Relations In Venezuela: 1935-1959., Winfield J. Burggraaff

History ETDs

The purpose of this study is to analyze the course of civil-military relations in Venezuela from the death of Juan Vicente Gómez in 1935 to the presidential inauguration of Rómulo Betancourt in 1959. This is a facet of Venezuelan politics that has not yet received adequate attention from historians. Most scholarly investigations have centered about political parties and outstanding political personalities, whereas this treatise will concentrate on the military institution as it interacted with civilian forces in the political arena. Hopefully, it will be a contribution not only to our understanding of contemporary political developments in Venezuela in particular, but …

Socialist Realism And The Spanish American Novel., Ralph Kite Jun 1967

Socialist Realism And The Spanish American Novel., Ralph Kite

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study is to examine the in-fluence of the literary movement called socialist realism on the Spanish American novel. Basically an invention of the Soviet Communists of the 1930's, the theory calls for the creation of literature which espouses the Marxist interpretation of society. Its international character combined with the militancy and the cohesiveness of its advocates has allowed it to assume proportions in Spanish America which its numbers would not otherwise merit,

Georgia And The Continental Congress, 1775-1782, Arthur S. Nichols Jun 1967

Georgia And The Continental Congress, 1775-1782, Arthur S. Nichols

History ETDs

Though claiming a large area, settled Georgia was a small colony, extending down the seacoast from its main port of Savannah and up the Savannah River to Augusta, with fewer than a dozen places that could be called towns. The British had carefully nurtured this colony since shortly before the final struggle with France for control of the North American continent in the middle of the eighteenth century. Most of the colony’s trade was with British; and it was prosperous, even though by 1774 the population was only about 35,000, of whom 15,000 were slaves.

Young Men Taken In And Done For, Daphne D. Vaughn Jun 1967

Young Men Taken In And Done For, Daphne D. Vaughn

English Language and Literature ETDs

There comes a time in the life of every man when he needs a father, desperately, not as a disciplinarian, not as a breadwinner, but as a comrade-in-arms. At a time of crisis, a man often feels that a wife or mother’s understanding is not enough. He needs the unemotional, strong shoulder or ardently listening ear of a respected male as a resting place in his anxiety. Man’s need to prove himself a man among men is not universal, but where the need is strong, the lack of this proof can be soul destroying. This play has been written to …

A Bibliography Including The Published Works Of Gerard Manley Hopkins And Critisicm Of The Works Of Gerard Manley Hopkins., Edward H. Cohen Jun 1967

A Bibliography Including The Published Works Of Gerard Manley Hopkins And Critisicm Of The Works Of Gerard Manley Hopkins., Edward H. Cohen

English Language and Literature ETDs

To compile a bibliography of scholarship on Gerard Manley Hopkins is not only to praise the poet and his works but also to judge the validity of his critics’ efforts. Hopkins has undoubtedly been underrated, overpraised, and misinterpreted; but the variety of the entries listed here attests to the widespread interest in his poems and to the great appeal which they have had.

Cady Wells: The Personal Vision, Kate Corbin Duncan Jun 1967

Cady Wells: The Personal Vision, Kate Corbin Duncan

Art & Art History ETDs

Henry Cady Wells was given all the cultural and educational advantages that a child of one of America’s wealthiest families could receive. The third son of Channing McGregory Wells and Irene Kelly Wells, he was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts on November 15, 1904. His father had succeeded his grandfather as president of the American Optical Company and head of the family. The boy, always called Cady rather than Henry, began attending a series of boarding schools with entry at age eight into the Fay School in Southborough. Four years there were followed by shorter periods at other Massachusetts institutions: Fessenden …

Mexico's Thermidorian Reaction, 1940-1960, Kenneth S. Cott Jun 1967

Mexico's Thermidorian Reaction, 1940-1960, Kenneth S. Cott

Art & Art History ETDs

One of the fundamental characteristics of the great revolutions which have occurred from time to time in Western society is the period of reaction and return to normality known as the Thermidor. No nation has been able to maintain a revolution indefinitely. This paper deals with the Thermidorian reaction as it has developed in Mexico since the late 1930’s.

Students of the nature of revolution have discerned certain uniformities in the great upheavals of Western history. The object of this paper is to compare those uniformities as they relate to the Thermidorian reaction with the course which the Mexical Revolution …

Conflitos Culturais E Religiosos Nas Obras De Vianna Moog, Marie F. Sovereign Jun 1967

Conflitos Culturais E Religiosos Nas Obras De Vianna Moog, Marie F. Sovereign

Psalms 2 And 110: A Comparison Of Exegetical Methods, Herbert Hohenstein Jun 1967

Psalms 2 And 110: A Comparison Of Exegetical Methods, Herbert Hohenstein

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This investigation is prompted first of all by the controversy within the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod concerning the use of historical criticism as a legitimate method of interpreting the Bible. But it is also important to ascertain whether the method is strictly a classroom discipline or if the procedure has tangible benefits for the work of the Christian minister. If the method does assist one in understanding the theological message of the Biblical words, then its potential value for the parish pastor in his varied ministries is heightened.

The purpose of this investigation, therefore, is to determine if historical criticism contributes …

Via Propria And Via Mystica In The Theology Of Jean Le Charlier De Gerson, David Schmiel Jun 1967

Via Propria And Via Mystica In The Theology Of Jean Le Charlier De Gerson, David Schmiel

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

What is proposed then, is to concentrate upon the development of: Gerson during his university period without referring to the work of his later years. The division is natural. Until 1408 Gerson was occupied primarily with his work as Chancellor of the University of Paris. Toward the end of this period and especially after 1408, he was drawn more and more into churchly-political affairs, and his concern was no longer only the reform of the University but also the resolution of the schism. It was before 1408, and especially during the years 1402-1408, that he produced many of his great …

An Exegetical Study Of I Corinthians 7:21 And Its Contemporary Implications, James Kaspar Jun 1967

An Exegetical Study Of I Corinthians 7:21 And Its Contemporary Implications, James Kaspar

Bachelor of Divinity

To attempt to discuss the whole of the New Testament evidence on slavery is too broad for a paper of this nature. Therefore, I have limited myself to an exegetical study of I Corinthians 7:21 and some of its implications. This paper will specifically seek to isolate the thrust or message of the pericope and its relationship to the total Pauline corpus, I shall discuss the various textual problems,, -especially the meaning of κλη̑σις and the construction μ̑αλλον χρ̑ησαι Then I shall consider the periscope in its various contexts (the immediate context [verses 17-24], the seventh chapter, the entire book …

Kosmos In John, Donald Heinz Jun 1967

Kosmos In John, Donald Heinz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to determine what John aims to say with the word kosmos . What understanding of man underlies John's semantic signal kosmos? Why did John choose this particular word to signal the thought he wanted to convey? What role did this term play in the Umwelt of John? Is the idea behind the term kosmos effectively and accurately signalled by the English term "world"?

Seven Years Of Change In Form And Color In The Sculpture Of John Chamberlain: 1958-1965, Mary Kelly Morgan Jun 1967

Seven Years Of Change In Form And Color In The Sculpture Of John Chamberlain: 1958-1965, Mary Kelly Morgan

Art & Art History ETDs

In the seven years between 1958 and 1965, John Chamberlain continually developed and changed his sculptural styles. Phases of this stylistic development require critical appraisal. Chamberlain's constant changing must be understood as the thread which connects each of his works to the whole of his effort. Chamberlain is controversial in that his work welcomes it, not controversial in that a debate, though invited, has not come.

Chamberlains evolution in form and color is not necessarily representative of the developments of his contemporaries. He is an individual, not a show-piece for the whole. By considering Chamberlain, critical research pays the present …

John Marin: The New Mexico Period, Walter Ellsworth Stevens Jun 1967

John Marin: The New Mexico Period, Walter Ellsworth Stevens

Art & Art History ETDs

A substantial number of books and articles has been devoted to the work of John Marin. Each of these, expressing something of the man’s poetic involvement with his work, has dealt with one or more aspects of the artist’s development. Although many have mentioned the fact that Marin spent two summers in and around Taos, New Mexico, no special study has been made of this important period in the artist’s life. A study of this nature is the purpose of this thesis.
