Theses & Honors Papers

"Not long ago a large Middle Western high school made a survey of its graduates over a ten-year period. Among the questions asked was, ' What, that you have found essential to your success, did your high school fail to provide?" Over ninety per cent of the alumni, most of whom had entered business and the professions, answered, 'High School did not provide adequate training in speaking.' " In the state of Virginia great strides have been made in recent years regarding the development of speech classes and speech program. Now on the threshold of "Where do we go from …

Great Day. An Edition Of Great Day : The Autobiography Of Emma Speed Sampson, John Letcher Fugate

Master's Theses

Other than a reference to Emma Speed Sampson in a sentence to the editorial in a recent Saturday Evening Post and two informative articles about her by Gay Friddell in the Commonwealth and Lillian F. Trimmer in the Richmond Times Dispatch virtually no criticism has been done on this outstanding Southern local colorist. Although she wrote books in the "Carter Girs" series, the "Molly Brown" series, and the "Campfire Girls" series, the sequence of books for which Emma Speed Sampson will be best remembered is the "Miss Minerva" series, twelves books whose humorous pages reveal the way of life in …

Chaucer's Ecclesiastics In The Canterbury Tales, Helen Lee Coleman Jul 1968

Chaucer's Ecclesiastics In The Canterbury Tales, Helen Lee Coleman

Master's Theses

It is thought that Chaucer began composing The Canterbury Tales as a dramatic whole around 1387. This is his last and by f ar his best known work. In this final. masterpiece Chaucer undertakes the tremendous task or presenting in poetic form a whole society. However, he does not merely explore society in general; he also develops the theme or the individual's relation to the community and the integral part that each person plays in making up the whole. The Canterbury Tales is, as George Lyman Kittredge so aptly puts it, "a micro cosmography" or a little image of a …

The Investigation Of Figure-Ground Relationships In Painting, Barbara H. Jones Jul 1968

The Investigation Of Figure-Ground Relationships In Painting, Barbara H. Jones

All Master's Theses

The thesis problem involved the investigation of figure-ground relationships in painting. This study dealt with varying experiments in space, color relationships, the juxtaposition of form, and value relationships. The media used were those common to oil, watercolor and drawing. The investigation entailed the development of form and space relationships in a series of paintings. The study included a critical evaluation regarding achievement of the expressive aims, and the conclusions drawn from individual paintings, as well as from the series. The fundamental locus lay within the figure-ground relationship and that has been the emphasis.

A Series Of Original Prints With The Human Image As An Important Compositional Element, John Paul Morgan Jul 1968

A Series Of Original Prints With The Human Image As An Important Compositional Element, John Paul Morgan

All Master's Theses

It was the purpose of this study to investigate and explore the use of the human image as a compositional element in a series of original prints. All of the available printmaking techniques within the knowledge of this artist were called upon to best express concepts and forms which he desired to portray. Three avenues of approach were used in the development of the print: (1) Transferring sketches made directly from the nude model onto the plate and developing the plate for the appropriate form of printmaking, (2) Developing the printmaking plate intuitively without sketches or preplanning, and (3) Planning …

An Analysis Of The Surveys On Clerical Celibacy, Robert M. Basham

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Within the Catholic Church at the present time there is a great deal of unrest with regards the problem of compulsory clerical celibacy. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the results of the various surveys of diocesan priests on the question of compulsory clerical celibacy. Although there have been many surveys, there was a need to analyze the data from these surveys. Through this analysis it was hoped that a factual basis for serious discussion of the issue of optional celibacy could be established.

In order to put the results from the surveys in true perspective a short …

The Cartography Of New Mexico, 1541-1800, Michael F. Weber Jun 1968

The Cartography Of New Mexico, 1541-1800, Michael F. Weber

History ETDs

This study of the history of cartography of New Mexico is not simply a description of sequences of changes in maps depicting New Mexico. It is also a study of the influences upon the cartographers of the period and the sources of information available to them. Maps were rarely made for cartographical purposes alone. There were many reasons for producing maps: profit, to prove political points, to show cause for invasion, indicating the need for more troops or a different settlement pattern, the list could go on indefinitely. The difference in purpose naturally influence the content of the final product. …

Ben Milam In History And Legend, Joseph Patrick Sanchez

History ETDs

Benjamin Rush Milan (1788-1835) is one of the many Texas notables who achieved a legendary status. Milam participated in the Empresario System, as well as in the Mexican Revolution of 1810 and the Texas Revolution. He first appeared in Texas as a trader; later he ventured into Texas as a leader in the James Long Expedition in 1819. Milam was active in the affairs of Texas until his untimely death at the successful siege of San Antonio. With his death, Milam emerged as a symbolic figure in legend, literature and history. The Administration Of Manuel Maria De Salcedo Of Texas: 1808-1813., Félix Díaz Almaráz Jr. Jun 1968

The Administration Of Manuel Maria De Salcedo Of Texas: 1808-1813., Félix Díaz Almaráz Jr.

History ETDs

Manuel María de Salcedo--whose full name was Manuel María de la Concepción Josef Agustín Eloy de Salcedo y Quiroga—governed Spanish Texas during the pivotal years of the first two decades of the nineteenth century when determined groups on opposite sides of the providence sought to overturn the royalist structure. From east of the Sabine River in Louisiana, Anglo-American frontiersmen, without fear of restraint by the government to which they owed allegiance, habitually trespassed in Hispanic territory. Hence, the threat of a foreign invasion perennially worried Spanish defenders who normally responded with troops and weapons. In 1810 the revolutionary movement of …

Beginning In Photography, James Alinder Jun 1968

Beginning In Photography, James Alinder

Art & Art History ETDs

Current estimates indicate that some eight billion images are being made each year by photographic processes. While photography has many important utilitarian functions, it also has a function as an art form through which man can express himself. In this context photography is part of the curriculum of a large and growing number of universities. This dissertation is intended to complement a beginning course in photography.

Photography was publicly introduced in 1839. Its subsequent developments provide a basis from which to examine the technical processes of modern photography: the exposure of the film in the camera, the developing of the …

Historical Aspects Of The Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association., Terry Lee Carroll Jun 1968

Historical Aspects Of The Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association., Terry Lee Carroll

History ETDs

This thesis presents a brief history, organizational concept, and operating structure of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association.

The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association was founded by citizens of the then isolated frontier coal mining city of Gallup, New Mexico in 1922 for the purpose of staging an annual demonstration of Indian ceremonialism and a display of Indian arts and crafts twelve years before a paved highway joined the city to the outside world.

The Ceremonial Association has continued in its ambitions to present the Indian in his true nature. Every August Ceremonial points out heritage of the Indian race and stresses …

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher Jun 1968

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher

History ETDs

Irvin McDowell is an important figure of the Civil War era because the role he played made him a storm center within the Union command structure. His career, therefore, is indicative of certain problems encountered by the North which ultimately prolonged the war. Those command problems, which affected overall federal strategy in the early years of the war, largely centered around four areas: unpreparedness, political intrigue, undefined civil/military functions, and cautious generals. Unpreparedness, the bane of the North's military existence during the early stages of the war, was also a hindrance to McDowell for his talents had previously been restricted …

The Advance Guard Of Manifest Destiny: Filibusters And Violators Of American Neutrality In Texas 1800-1845, Rosalind Zichek Jun 1968

The Advance Guard Of Manifest Destiny: Filibusters And Violators Of American Neutrality In Texas 1800-1845, Rosalind Zichek

History ETDs

A continuous stream of Americans started passing into the Spanish provinces at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century. They were largely people who entered the area illegally. This thesis deals with only those who did come illegally into Texas during the periods of Spanish and Mexican rule. There were basically two types of intruders, one, the quasi-patriotic filibuster: the other, the volunteer for the armies of the rebelling Texans. These filibusters and neutrality violators had many significant attributes. Macy were lured to filibustering in the area by the stories of gold in the fabled Spanish provinces. Later, the promise of …

British Public Opinion Of The Greek War Of Independence, 1821-1829., Jean Collins Craven Jun 1968

British Public Opinion Of The Greek War Of Independence, 1821-1829., Jean Collins Craven

History ETDs

The purpose of this study was to attempt to understand some of the factors which contributed to British public opinion of the Greek war of Independence, 1821-1829. England was not directly involved in this war, but it nevertheless evoked an intense interest among the British people, particularly during the first five years. Selected newspapers and other periodicals were canvassed for the entire period of the war as a manner of checking the frequency of publication of opinion of the war. Other newspapers and periodicals were sampled for only a few years to determine the type of opinion expressed. In addition, …

The Theology Of Carl F. H. Henry, Richard Warneck Jun 1968

The Theology Of Carl F. H. Henry, Richard Warneck

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The issues raised by these and related questions have held the attention of serious theologians for several decades. Carl Henry is vigorously interested in the treatment of special revelation by various schools of contemporary theology, and the following chapter will represent his evaluation of the same. At this juncture, our endeavor is to state precisely Henry's theology of the Scriptures and special revelation. A clear understanding of Henry's position in this regard will be necessary for a fair appraisal of his major concerns as he addresses them to modern man in behalf of the Christian faith.

The Mutual Compatibility Of Whitehead's God And Actual Ocacasions With Respect To Temporality And Subjective Aim In Process And Reality, G. John Lucas Jun 1968

The Mutual Compatibility Of Whitehead's God And Actual Ocacasions With Respect To Temporality And Subjective Aim In Process And Reality, G. John Lucas

Philosophy ETDs

The inquiry into Whitehead's philosophy of which this thesis is the result began with the first reading of Process and Reality. Although the issue which is the center of concern here is quite different from the difficulty which characterized the initial stages of the inquiry, the two have much in common since the former has grown out of the latter. The initial difficulties with the position of Process and Reality have undergone successive modifications as a greater understanding of that I position was achieved, and the final modification and formulation of these initial difficulties are the subject of this thesis.

Elizabethan Foreign Policy : 1567-1585, Jo Anne Reynolds Jun 1968

Elizabethan Foreign Policy : 1567-1585, Jo Anne Reynolds

Master's Theses

The topic of this paper, "Elizabeth Foreign Policy: 1567-1585", evolved from an attempt to analyze Anglo-Spanish relations during the same period. The interrelatedness of the religious and political problems among the major powers of the period led this author frequently into considerations outside the original sphere of interest. While the topic was expanded in scope, it should be noted that the paper attempts to deal only with the more significant factors affecting English foreign policy and not not pretend to illuminate the complex and changing national situations elsewhere. Specific external events are introduced only when they directly affect Elizabeth foreign …

The York River Railroad : 1851-1881, Stuart B. Medlin Jun 1968

The York River Railroad : 1851-1881, Stuart B. Medlin

Master's Theses

The construction of railroads in the State of Virginia was perhaps the single most important economic development that affected the growth of the state. Connecting isolated sections of the state, railroads enabled rural and urban areas to share their respective contributions to the economic prosperity of the common-wealth. Beginning in 1836, when Virginia's first line was constructed, Virginia railroading developed rapidly from 676 3/4 miles in 1851 to 1,954 miles in 1880.

One of the lines that contributed to this economic development was a short thirty-eight mile track that ran from Richmond to West Point at the head of the …
