Impact Of A New Budgeting System On A Science Agency, Jeffery Thomas Kite-Powell

Music ETDs

This thesis presents transcriptions into modern notation of a group of organ Magnificats and organ hymns contained in an early seventeenth-century manuscript of liturgical keyboard music which belongs to the Library of the Cathedral Chapter, Visby, Sweden. The principal objective of this thesis is to present in modern notation, compositions of Hieronymous Praetorius, Jacobus Praetorius and Johann Bahr. Heretofore, these organ works have been accessible only in their original manuscript form, written in the obsolete ‘new German organ tablature.’ New German organ tablature was the type of notation used in Germany from the middle of the sixteenth-century through most of …

A Study Of Some Relationships Between Late Renaissance Music And The Temple Of George Herbert, Rosalie J. Eggleston Sep 1968

A Study Of Some Relationships Between Late Renaissance Music And The Temple Of George Herbert, Rosalie J. Eggleston

English Language and Literature ETDs

Musical metaphor so permeates the poems of George Herbert's The Temple that no critic can afford to ignore it; yet no one has thus far attempted a full-length study of the relationships between music in the late Renaissance and The Temple. This dissertation proposes to fill this gap in Herbert criticism by presenting three aspects of the musical milieu which shaped the poet's esthetic: first, the tools of the artist; second, the parallels between Herbert’s poetry and affective music; and, third, the use of dialogue in music and in The Temple. Chapter I, "The Heritage of the Artist," includes a …

Samuel Johnson's Part In The Swiftian Tradition: A Study Of Johnson As Swift's Biographer, Critic, And Associate Moralist, Jordan Paul Richman Sep 1968

Samuel Johnson's Part In The Swiftian Tradition: A Study Of Johnson As Swift's Biographer, Critic, And Associate Moralist, Jordan Paul Richman

English Language and Literature ETDs

A study of Johnson's part in the Swiftian tradition begins with his Life of Swift, because his portrayal of Swift's life and work indicates the extent he is able to accept the permanence of Swift's work. His picture of Swift is not damaging as many believe. Johnson made use of earlier eighteenth-century biographical sketches, such as those written by Orrery, Delany, Pilkington, and Hawkesworth. In his synthesis of the early sketches, Hawkesworth is objective, sympathetic, and often close to Johnson's own style and sentiments. Though Johnson's Swift is a man of genius, unable to renounce his childish impulses and acute …

Paradise Lost And The State Of Innocence: A Comparison Of Plot, Characterization, Genre And Theme, Evelyn N. Saucier Sep 1968

Paradise Lost And The State Of Innocence: A Comparison Of Plot, Characterization, Genre And Theme, Evelyn N. Saucier

English Language and Literature ETDs

Previous studies of Paradise Lost and The State of Innocence have been concerned primarily with the question of rhyme and blank verse. Although the difference in versification is important, there are other areas of comparison which might also be profitably studied. The purpose of this paper is to examine the plots, characterization, and themes of these two works and to suggest several reasons for Dryden’s innovations. The plot of Dryden’s opera consists of incidents similar to those found in the epic. Dryden arranges his material in strict chronological order, discarding the “in media res” technique of Milton. Thus the sequence …

The Critical Career Of Allen Tate, 1922-1952., Vera Louise Norwood Aug 1968

The Critical Career Of Allen Tate, 1922-1952., Vera Louise Norwood

English Language and Literature ETDs

The thesis of this paper rests on the conviction that Allen Tate's essential contribution to letters, despite his connections with the Southern Fugitive and Agrarian movements, is of lasting national importance. He is a critic who, because he is also a modern poet, recognized and developed a new critical stance which was quite relevant to the concerns of other men of letters of his generation. In order to understand how this stance developed one must understand Tate's own loss of traditional values after World War I. This loss is best expressed in his poetry, but its implications are carried out …

Ayn Rand: Her Systematic Appraisal Of The Problems And Challenges Confronting Modern Era, David Clifton Lawson Aug 1968

Ayn Rand: Her Systematic Appraisal Of The Problems And Challenges Confronting Modern Era, David Clifton Lawson

History ETDs

Ayn Rand feels that the world has fallen into the errors of irrationalism. This has left us almost totally bankrupt of any meaningful cultural values. This irrationalism, or abandonment of reason for emotions, has left man wholly out of touch with reality. The irrational syndrome that Miss Rand describes starts with mysticism, or man's irrational metaphysics and epistemology. The first derivative of mysticism is altruism; it mirrors man's irrational personal ethics. After altruism comes collectivism, or man's irrational social ethic. The final stage of this syndrome is statism, man's irrational socio-economic system. Ayn Rand's answer to the world's renunciation of …

The Ku Klux Klan In Grand Forks, William Lathrop Harwood Aug 1968

The Ku Klux Klan In Grand Forks, William Lathrop Harwood

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

During the 1920's the Ku Klux Klan powerfully influenced all levels of government in the United States. For example, its strength helped to elect governors and U.S. Senators in eight states. As a result of Klan efforts, Oregon voters in 1923 approved a measure prohibiting parochial schools from teaching the first eight grades, and Portland Klan candidates won seats on the city commission in the same year.

This thesis is a case study of the Klan's political activities in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the trading center of the fertile wheatlands of the northern Red River Valley. Here, the local Klan …

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner Aug 1968

Milton And Cambridge : A New Look At An Old Attitude, Roy S. Riner

Master's Theses

From the insights cleaned from current research into John Milton's years as an undergraduate and a graduate student at Cambridge University, this writer has found an overwhelming amount of material dedicated to pointing out Milton's total lack of affection for that university. For the most part, those statements bearing on Milton's dislike for Cambridge are unequivocal. For example, one scholar has remarked that John Milton departed from the University in 1632 "weary and disguised" with the medieval, unbearable antiquated methods of the place. That same scholar continues with the statement that Milton's attitude toward Cambridge was "uniformly unfriendly" and that …

An Historical Study Of The Solo Concerto Cadenza, Toni Christine Rydman Aug 1968

An Historical Study Of The Solo Concerto Cadenza, Toni Christine Rydman

All Master's Theses

The study of the solo concerto cadenza is one that encompasses the areas of performance, history and theory. Even though the cadenza occupies a small place in the total music literature, it is a sort of microcosm of music. It would be impossible to make a study of the cadenza without completely understanding the concerto and related forms of music. An historical study such as this can lead to deeper understanding of the music to be performed.

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson Aug 1968

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson

Theses and Dissertations

The unsettled status of the Red River Valley during the 1860's made inevitable the establishment of a military post near the 49th Parallel. The Minnesota Uprising in 1862 caused a band of Sioux Indians, responsible for the massacre, to flee to Canada to escape punishment by the military. In 1863, a hastily organized battalion established a temporary fort at Pembina to capture the renegades. After accomplishing its mission, the battalion abandoned the post in 1864.

With the end of the Civil War, people looked to the frontier for fertile lands to settle; but the Indian threat kept them out …

Der Richter Und Der Gerechte In Dürrenmatts Dramen, Helga Schlichtherle Jul 1968

Der Richter Und Der Gerechte In Dürrenmatts Dramen, Helga Schlichtherle

Dissertations and Theses

In each of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's ten plays that appeared between 1946 and 1965 there are two protagonists. One of them is powerful and egocentric, strives for fame and power and challenges the world. To destroy his rivals he becomes a 'Judge', sometimes even an executioner.

His antagonist is humble and pious, believes in God, and considers life as God's gift. Christian ethics determine his decisions. He is the 'Righteous'.

Dürrenmatt's work divides into four periods which reflect the author’s times and beliefs.

The first three plays (Es steht geschrieben, Der Blinde, Romulus der Grosse show hope for a better world …

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail Jul 1968

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to study in depth the relationships of individuals in the three social classes in England during the Victorian Age. Since original documents and research material were scarce I used two novels by Thomas Hardy to illustrate the conflicts between representatives of the social classes. In 1891 England was prosperous and many people believed there was no conflict between the classes. Thomas Hardy believed this was untrue and, by method of comparison, wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure to prove his point. This thesis includes research on the two novels, Thomas Hardy’s …
