El 4 De Junio: Birth Of A Legend, Ronald E. Raven Jan 1973

El 4 De Junio: Birth Of A Legend, Ronald E. Raven

Wayne State University Theses

In June of 1932, Marmaduke Grove and two compatriots staged a bloodless coup over the Chilean government of Juan Montero. The insurgent junta and the Grove legend have become so entwined over the years that the period has come to be known as "the twelve day Socialist Republic of Marmaduke Grove," but the traditionally history-conscious Left has conspicuously avoided publishing any hard data on that government. Consequently, Grove and the "Socialist Republic" have passed into history as the legend depicts them, unchallenged by historical research. This thesis examines those 12 days in detail through the Chilean journalistic source material. Only …

Chaucer's Criseyde : The Pressures Of The Courtly Love Code, Betty Ann Jaffee Jan 1973

Chaucer's Criseyde : The Pressures Of The Courtly Love Code, Betty Ann Jaffee

Master's Theses

When Chaucer wrote the poem Troilus and Criseyde, he created a heroine who stands out from other romantic med ieval heroines such as Guinevere and Ysolt. He created a heroine of such complexities that critics have debated her motives endlessly and have explored the psychology of her emotions with every literary tool at their command. He created a heroirie whose sin was so damning that it inspired Robert Henryson to provide for her what he considered a fit ting punishment; and it inspired Shakespeare to try to salvage the wreck left by Henryson to create his masterful play.

It is …

The Speech Of The Andean Mestizo In The Novels Of Ciro Alegria, Catherine Thorburn Neale Jan 1973

The Speech Of The Andean Mestizo In The Novels Of Ciro Alegria, Catherine Thorburn Neale

Master's Theses

This inquiry is made and presented from the point of view of a language teacher. After a student has acquired the basic skills of reading, writing, and speaking the foreign language, a most practical medium with which to continue his language study is literature. As well as gaining an understanding of people through literary study, he also may see the language in use as a tool for communication and become aware of some possibilities of it as an artistic medium. This study is concerned with the works of the Peruvian writer Ciro Alegria, who includes in his novels many examples …

Determinism And Freedom Of Choice Operating Through Five Experiences In Psychological Development In The Lives Of Three Of George Eliot's Heroines, Elisabeth Even Sale Jan 1973

Determinism And Freedom Of Choice Operating Through Five Experiences In Psychological Development In The Lives Of Three Of George Eliot's Heroines, Elisabeth Even Sale

Master's Theses

George Eliot's world is a deterministic world. She believed that circumstances and conventions imposed by society control events in an individual life; nevertheless, in the inevitable conflicts between inner desire and outer reality, the individual is responsible for his own choices and the acts which they direct. Furthermore, only in a deterministic world are intelligent, moral choices possible. The explanation or this seeming paradox lies in education or the individual by experience to learn to make satisfying choices and to develop a strong will. Through experience, the individual learns both the hazards of the selfish choice and also the lasting …

Haciendas De Jalisco Y AledañOs:Fincas Rusticas De AntañO, 1506-1821, Ricardo Lanster-Jones

History ETDs

In the conquest of New Spain it was considered useful to provide for development of the conquered land by distributing portions thereof to worthy vassals of the crown. Rural areas were gradually reduced to private ownership by means of land concessions granted in the name of the crown by various officers. These concessions took several forms but all bore a positive relationship to the basic resources, the existing occupation pattern, and the economic system already established in pre-Hispanic Mexico.

Whether the system of economic exploitation of colonial New Spain was one of direct Indian control or of mere dominion over …

Changing Western Images Of Russia During The Reign Of Catherine Ii, 1762-1796, Janet L. Menze Jan 1973

Changing Western Images Of Russia During The Reign Of Catherine Ii, 1762-1796, Janet L. Menze

Dissertations and Theses

The question of Russia’s relationship to Western European culture has been discussed by historians of Russian civilization for several centuries. This study aims to broaden the understanding of that relationship by investigating some of the conditions of eighteenth century Russia and Europe which led the Western Europeans to formulate an image of Russia, of Russian civilization, and of the role that Russia should play in Western European affairs. This study attempts to provide the views of a cross-section of eighteenth century Western Europeans and Americans toward the Russia of Empress Catherine II, 1762-1796.

Meaning Of Work For Women, Susan Ackerman Jan 1973

Meaning Of Work For Women, Susan Ackerman

Dissertations and Theses

In this research practicum we were concerned with the measurement and implications of factors which influence the meaning of work for white American women. The present study was a pilot study for the second part of a research project proposed by the Human Interaction Research Institute (H.I.R.I.). John Marks, Ph.D., was co-director of the first part of the project and is the director of this study.

Part I of the "Meaning of Work" project examined alternative life styles and corresponding career choices made by young men. This study identified values, aspirations, backgrounds, and characteristics of men who were grouped as …

The Introduction Of The Apprenticeship System To Jamaica : The First Period, Ernel A. Henry Jan 1973

The Introduction Of The Apprenticeship System To Jamaica : The First Period, Ernel A. Henry

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

After living under the dominance of the white planters, the Negroes of Jamaica and other West Indian Islands became dependent on their masters for all that was necessary for the sustenance of life. However, when the atrocities of slavery became unbearable, and the sugar industry was no longer profitable to the masses of the British population, it became necessary to end the system. The conviction of the British government was that there must be a gradual emancipation in order to acquaint the Negroes with the life and responsibilities of free men. An experimental arrangement was introduced to implement the new …

Job Needs, Expectations, And Satisfaction Of West Virginia University Extension Nutrition Aides, Dolores Mcclung Turner Jan 1973

Job Needs, Expectations, And Satisfaction Of West Virginia University Extension Nutrition Aides, Dolores Mcclung Turner

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to examine some of the factors that motivate the nonprofessional (nutrition aide) in the West Virginia University Cooperative Extension Service. Certain attitudes expressed by the nonprofessional concerning job satisfaction may provide implications for supervision. Effective human relations play a major role in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. If the supervisor can understand the job needs and job expectations of the Nutrition Aide, he or she will be better able to help the Aide develop into a more effective and productive employee.

Nature, Reason, And Eternity: Images Of The Divine Vision In The Four Zoas, Cathy Shaw Jan 1973

Nature, Reason, And Eternity: Images Of The Divine Vision In The Four Zoas, Cathy Shaw

Honors Papers

In The Four Zoas, Blake wages mental war against nature and mystery, reason and tyranny. As a dream in nine nights, the world of The Four Zoas illustrates an unreal world which nevertheless represents the real world to Albion, the dreamer. The dreamer is Blake's archetypal and eternal man; he has fallen asleep among the flowers of Beulah. The world he dreams of is a product of his own physical laziness and mental lassitude. In this world, his faculties vie with each other for power until the ascendance of Los, the imaginative shaper. Los heralds the apocalypse, Albion reawakes, and …

Mailer's American Dream, Charles D. Ettelson Jan 1973

Mailer's American Dream, Charles D. Ettelson

Honors Papers

The American dream has been in existence almost as long as America (as a political entity) has. From the Puritan's desire for the "City on the Hill" to Hunter S. Thompson's recent book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, Americans have been convinced that the individual can transcend earthly evil and decadence, and attain a state of perfection. The American dream is the visionary ideal that is represented in social form by utopian thinking. A personalized ideal would appear easier to attain than a social one because of its apparent …

Daniel Deronda: A Consideration Of George Eliot's Concept Of Culture, Candyce Golis Jan 1973

Daniel Deronda: A Consideration Of George Eliot's Concept Of Culture, Candyce Golis

Honors Papers

Daniel Deronda (published 1876) is George Eliot's last and in many ways most controversial novel. Contemporary readers resent her writing anything which would compete with Middlemarch, an immensely popular novel and Deronda's immediate predecessor. Even today Deronda suffers due to its location in the George Eliot canon. Whereas Middlemarch is universally acclaimed, Daniel Deronda is often dismissed as a failure (limited or otherwise) when it is compared with the book Virginia Woolf calls "one of the few English novels written for grown-up people."

A Close Reading Of Tennyson's Maud, Lucy Marks Jan 1973

A Close Reading Of Tennyson's Maud, Lucy Marks

Honors Papers

"We now turn with diminished pleasure from In Memoriam to Mr. Tennyson's recently published volume of Maud and Other Poems: for the qualities we appreciate most highly in the former are precisely those which are most wanting in the latter." Thus the writer for the Edinburgh Review summed up the reaction of dismay and distaste reflected in the many notoriously adverse reviews that Maud received when it was published in the fall of 1855. Following five years after the almost universally-praised elegy for Arthur Henry Hallam, it put forth as protagonist a madman positing unacceptable solutions to social evils, and …
