The Diplomatic Stalemate Of Japan And The United States: 1941, David Hoien Overby May 1973

The Diplomatic Stalemate Of Japan And The United States: 1941, David Hoien Overby

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis contends from the time of September 1940 to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States and Japan offered each no workable concessions that might have deterred war. A stalemate was finally established between the two countries. The position of the Japanese nation was to expand and control "Greater East-Asia," while the position the United States held was one that claimed all nations should uphold certain basic principles of democracy, that all nations should honor the sanctity of treaties," and that they should treat neighboring countries in a friendly fashion.

This thesis also contends that Yosuke Matsuoka …

History Of Al-Hijaz (1520-1632), Farouk M. Taufik

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an attempt to put together the history of Al-Hijaz, and to present a description of the political situation during the period from the year 1520 through the year 1632. The period starts three years after the submission of Sharif Barakat II of Mecca to the new Islamic power, the Ottomans. And it concludes with the restoration of order in Mecca in 1632.

Pastoral Counseling With The Dying Child And His Family, Kenneth Doka May 1973

Pastoral Counseling With The Dying Child And His Family, Kenneth Doka

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper hopes to explore the area of pastoral counseling to the dying child and his family. The paper views such a ministry as having three major facets. First is the ministry to the dying child himself. While this seems elementary, it is often neglected, often because of the minister’s own difficulty with the death of a child. It must be realized that childhood is not a homogeneous unit but that there are sharply differentiated stages within childhood. The five-year-old reacts to death in ways considerably different from the adolescent. Thus research along these lines, along with its pastoral implications …

The Religious Polychromed Wood Sculpture Of Colonial Quito: Its Origins And Sources, Gabrielle G. Palmer May 1973

The Religious Polychromed Wood Sculpture Of Colonial Quito: Its Origins And Sources, Gabrielle G. Palmer

Art & Art History ETDs

The setting is Quito, Ecuador during the colonial period (1534 - 1809) when it was the capital of the geographical entity of the Audiencia of Quito, and part of the vast overseas Spanish colonial empire. The art of this period was almost exclusively at the service of the Catholic Church. One of its most important manifestations, both from a religious and an esthetic standpoint, was those cult images central to Catholic worship, carved of wood and realistically polychromed, which are still to be found in Quito's many colonial churches and convents. These images provide the subject of the following study, …

The Oncenio Of Augusto B. LeguíA:Middle Sector Government And Leadership In Peru, 1919-1930., Gary Richard Garrett May 1973

The Oncenio Of Augusto B. LeguíA:Middle Sector Government And Leadership In Peru, 1919-1930., Gary Richard Garrett

History ETDs

In Latin America, during the early twentieth century, various middle sector political movements emerged to challenge the pre-eminence of entrenched elites in such countries as Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Peru. This work focuses on the eleven year rule of Augusto B. Leguía from 1919 to 1930, a period during which, it is generally conceded by scholars, the middle classes made their initial sustained attempt to govern Peru. First, this study traces the development of the middle sectors in Peru and their successful accession to political power under Leguía’s leadership. Second, it evaluates the policy and practices of the leguiísta government …

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass May 1973

Eyes On The Branches: Poems, And An Essay On Contemporary Poetry, Richard Cass

Senior Scholar Papers

The thirty poems collected here were written durin 1972-197. They begin as rather imagistic pieces, but the imagist tendencies are tempered with a preoccupation with the process of emotion. The poems progress through a middle period of finding a poetic voice by combining elements of other styles with the stylistic tendencies that rise out of myself. The subject matter is deliberately varied. The poems emerge, in the last few pieces, as the beginnings of a voice which combines a preoccupation with man in the unity of the world, the state of natural world and the nature of its retaliation for …

Mural Painting, Martha C.T. Wetmore May 1973

Mural Painting, Martha C.T. Wetmore

Senior Scholar Papers

For my freshman Jan Plan at Colby I painted a mural in Runnals Union illustrating a William Blake poem. This effort began a four year painting project which I pursued my sophomore and junior years by finishing the Hall of the Machines in Runnals and by commencing the Paper Wall in Roberts. As a Senior Scholar, I've continued my undertaking by painting eleven more panels. Eight of these are in the Paper Wall and the other three are in the Spa in Miller Library. In my wallpainting up until this year my major interest has been in a strong two-dimentional …

Sacred-Secular Complementarity In Al Filo Del Agua And Pedro Paramo: An Inquiry Into Mythmaking, Floyd F. Merrell May 1973

Sacred-Secular Complementarity In Al Filo Del Agua And Pedro Paramo: An Inquiry Into Mythmaking, Floyd F. Merrell

Latin American Studies ETDs

Structuralism is the methodological approach employed in this study of two contemporary Mexican novels. The technique, including logico-mathematical relationships, schemata, and terminology, consists generally of an adaptation of Claude Lévi-Strauss' structural studies in anthropology and particularly in his interpretation of myth. The "deep-structure-surface-structure" dichotomization, a fundamental methodological premise we have adopted, is from Noam Chomsky by way of Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of linguistics. And the notion of "equilibrium," a dynamic interplay allowing for a genetic, developmental approach to structuralism, has been borrowed from the psychologist Jean Piaget.

Our initial objective was to formulate eclectically a method of structural analysis. …

Die Einwirkung Des Jugendstils Auf Rilkes FrüHwerk, Linda Collins Blumenthal May 1973

Die Einwirkung Des Jugendstils Auf Rilkes FrüHwerk, Linda Collins Blumenthal

Dissertations and Theses

A review of the secondary literature written on Rilke's poetry reveals that his earliest work has scarcely been dealt with. This fact is not astounding considering that the poet found literary acclaim only in his more mature period. In those cases, however, in which Rilke's first poetry has been examined, it is approached outside the context of later developments. This paper is based on the thesis that a vital continuous thread which begins with Jugendstil and extends into his most mature poetry, runs through Rilke's work as regards life style and art theory. Many of his most typical symbols - …

Ethical Themes In African Thought., Elwood Joseph Mcdowell May 1973

Ethical Themes In African Thought., Elwood Joseph Mcdowell

Philosophy ETDs

Having long believed that my own African cultural heritage was worthless, it is especially problematical to me to establish that African peoples have much to offer philosophically. The central problem posed in this thesis is to bring to light African thinking as regards certain ethical questions such as the "individual vs. the community," "the highest good," and "the overall moral progress of mankind." Because of the newness of this subject matter, my resources were limited. I hope, nonetheless, that through examining the works of some few authors who have drawn their conclusions from innumerable proverbs and the structure of various …

Margaret Fuller: From Liberal To Radical. A Foreshadowing Of The Feminist Movement, Mary Maxine May 1973

Margaret Fuller: From Liberal To Radical. A Foreshadowing Of The Feminist Movement, Mary Maxine

American Studies ETDs

Margaret Fuller, one of the most interesting people in nineteenth-century America, was also one of the most maligned. Our knowledge of her is distorted. It is because of this distortion that she has been incised from the social and intellectual history of the United States. I have dealt with two major problems: Margaret Fuller's transition from liberal to radical, from reformer ·to revolutionary, and with the reasons for the destruction of the memory of Margaret Fuller as a great American thinker and activist.

She wrote the first feminist tract printed in the United States: Woman in the Nineteenth Century; she, …

Pascal's Concept Of Christianity., Audrey Vivien Bull May 1973

Pascal's Concept Of Christianity., Audrey Vivien Bull

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis explains Pascal's concept of Christianity, showing how it developed during the course of his life until it attained the conviction expressed in the Pensees.

It starts with the events of his life, taken from the accounts of two people related closely to him. His style is then analyzed, showing how it was influenced by the quarrel of the Jansenist and Jesuit sects to produce the polemic Lettres Provinciales and the reasons for the change of style before the Pensees. The importance of his style is stressed, because he fixed the French language and is perhaps the greatest stylist …

Maps, George F. Wetmore May 1973

Maps, George F. Wetmore

English Language and Literature ETDs

Maps is about myself, "the map is an exact abstract/of what happens out on the road" says the poet and the road is a tortuous one. The events it occasions are sometimes cosmological as in "Numbers" and "Twelve Notes" where an archetypal numerology orders the poet's vision. At other times the vision is a surreal visitation like those in "Six Visitations." But the bulk of the poetry like the bulk of experience is literal. "Barnstable Harbor," "A Dirty Movie," "Fishing" and others try simply to state with Zen-like clarity the literal truth of the poet's experience. In these poems the …

Ecology And America, Peter Eugene Hartley May 1973

Ecology And America, Peter Eugene Hartley

American Studies ETDs

The present basis of our society implies the inevitable destruction of the environment. The considerations which make this evident also make nonsense of the distinction between capitalism and socialism. Further, if we wish to save the environment we must abandon the scientific world view. The crucial question is a question of values, and values have an aesthetic basis. That is, values have a mystical basis. Though my approach to it is more or less anthropological when I begin, American literature provides the indispensable basis for my examination of the shape and quality of actual American life, seen in ecological totality …

Poems In Spanish And English Of Alejandro Aura, Margarita Michelena And Efrain Huerta: Poets Of The Dreamed Reality, Robert Eugene Rhodes May 1973

Poems In Spanish And English Of Alejandro Aura, Margarita Michelena And Efrain Huerta: Poets Of The Dreamed Reality, Robert Eugene Rhodes

American Studies ETDs

Poems of three contemporary Mexican poets, Alejandro Aura, Margarita Michelena and Efrain Huerta are presented in Spanish and English. In translating these poets I came to the conclusion that they had in common an attitude toward the writing of poetry that resulted in the creation for the reader or a dreamed reality, a state in which the poet is not only able to tap the subconscious structures of language but also able to move between the multiple levels of consciousness, revealing the connections between them, and achieving a fusion in created reality which is the poem. In the dream's creation …

Willa Cather: A Feminist Study, Sharon R. Barba May 1973

Willa Cather: A Feminist Study, Sharon R. Barba

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation is an application of the principles of feminist criticism to the fiction of Willa Cather. It questions the male critical estimate of Cather and examines elements in her work which have either not been acknowledged or have been distorted in male criticism. The study views Cather primarily as a woman writer, emphasizing the feminine consciousness in her work and focusing on the Cather heroine as an expression of that consciousness. It centers on a feminist reading of five novels: O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark, My Antonia, A Lost Lady, and My Mortal Enemy. Alexandra Bergson, Thea …

Motivation To Prepare For Ministry, Kent Hunter May 1973

Motivation To Prepare For Ministry, Kent Hunter

Master of Divinity Thesis

These examples, like many others in the history of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, indicate that there are some channels of recruitment which appear to be more effective than others. This does not mean that the Holy Spirit is selective with regards to effectiveness. Rather, it indicates that the Spirit moves through some channels better than others. It is important, from a recruitment point of view, to know the areas of motivation among those who have decided to prepare for the ministry. The prime motivators, when indicated, will serve as targets for effective recruitment activity. To define those targets is the …

God As Phenomenon, Charles Yunghans May 1973

God As Phenomenon, Charles Yunghans

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper concerns itself with several approaches to a secular understanding of religious belief and deals briefly with the more or less explicit challenge they offer to the notion that there is in fact a God which communicates to man. This problem emerged for me as I encountered religious phenomenology and structuralism for the first time this year, and noted the obvious challenge they pose to traditional dogma. The answer I offer is one I really had not set out to achieve: a tentative acceptance of the results of these programs in the light of the system of Teilhard, the …

The Theology Of Justus Menius, Alvin H. Horst May 1973

The Theology Of Justus Menius, Alvin H. Horst

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The primary purpose of this dissertation, therefore, is to provide a general systematic exposition of the theology of Justus Menius. To accomplish that purpose, it will be necessary to provide an historical overview of his life and activities. Menius never published a systematic theology. His books and writings, like Luther's, were responses to specific theological and ecclesiastical problems. For Menius, these problems were occasioned primarily by the interaction between the theological movement which originated in the university and the life of the local congregations. In order to get at Menius' theology, therefore, it is necessary to have an acquaintance with …

The Struggle For Religious Freedom Through Separation Of Church And State In Colonial America, Fred E. Schuerch May 1973

The Struggle For Religious Freedom Through Separation Of Church And State In Colonial America, Fred E. Schuerch

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The struggle for religious freedom through the separation of church and state in Colonial America is a most important part of our national Christian heritage. Yet, because our living experience is decidedly this side of that struggle, we often fail to understand and thus appreciate the religious liberty it afforded to us. We fail to understand that those who struggled for religious freedom did so to insure that true Christian faith would never be suppressed.

The danger, then, is that in not understanding our religious freedom we lose it. Secure and often complacent in our religious liberty we smile at …

Matthew's Use Of Old Testament Fulfillment In The Nativity/Childhood Section, Kenneth James Peterson May 1973

Matthew's Use Of Old Testament Fulfillment In The Nativity/Childhood Section, Kenneth James Peterson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "From the beginning of the Christian era the Old Testament has been used as evidence for the messiahship of Jesus Christ. The New Testament is filled with references to the Old Testament , and many of these passages are cited to support Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the Old Testament messianic hope."

Comparative Analyses Of The Attributes Of Yahweh And Ra, William R. Fox May 1973

Comparative Analyses Of The Attributes Of Yahweh And Ra, William R. Fox

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "The Old Testament contains numerous references to the gods of countries which were near the Hebrew nation. Baal, the male god of Canaan, and Ashtoreth, the female goddess, are referred to as early as Deuteronomy 23:18 and throughout the rest of the Old Testament. Ashur, the chief god of Assyria, is mentioned in Nahum (1:14, 3:1, 3:3-5, 3:13-15) and Ezekiel (22:1-4, 24:6, 24:9) as well as elsewhere. Reference is also made to Chemosh, the god of Moab (Numbers 21:29, Judges 11:24, Jeremiah 48:7) and the Philistine god, Dagon (Judges 16:23, I Samuel 5:2-5, I Chronicle 10:10). However, only a …

The Significance Of Δei In The Lukan Writings, Robinson Radjagukguk May 1973

The Significance Of Δei In The Lukan Writings, Robinson Radjagukguk

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis represents an attempt to investigate the true meaning and significance of the notion of "necessity" (δετ), as it appears in the New Testament, particularly in the Lukan writings.

The Pneuma As Authority And Moving Force In Paul, With Special Reference To 2 Corinthians 3:17, Roger Beese May 1973

The Pneuma As Authority And Moving Force In Paul, With Special Reference To 2 Corinthians 3:17, Roger Beese

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis proposes to discuss the pneuma theology of St. Paul on the basis of the much disputed seventeenth verse of 2 Corinthians 3 and related passages. The study will concentrate on the role of pneuma as authority and moving force in the Pauline congregation. The word pneuma is used frequently in Paul's letters, particularly in the Pillar Epistles, in a variety of contexts. Pneuma is unquestionably a key concept in Pauline theology. A study of Paul's pneuma theology, then, is a vital one, for it strikes close to the heart of his entire theological thinking. The centrality of his …
