Utopia And The Agrarian Tradition In America, 1865-1900, Donald C. Burt Jul 1973

Utopia And The Agrarian Tradition In America, 1865-1900, Donald C. Burt

American Studies ETDs

The American utopists of the years 1865-1900 were heirs of the principles of the agrarian democratic faith: that agriculture is a sacred occupation; that cities are corrupt and cultivated nature wholesome; that the machine is a potential threat; that land-holding should be widespread, equal, and private; that individualism, neighborly cooperation, and equality of status and wealth insure the stability of the state; that government should be decentralized and severely limited; and, finally, that these agrarian principles were followed during the Early Republic, before the postbellum rise of industrial-capitalism destroyed them.

Manipulation In Photography, Stanley J. Bowman Jul 1973

Manipulation In Photography, Stanley J. Bowman

Art & Art History ETDs

"Manipulation" in photography is the major area of consideration for this paper. Manipulation first appeared in photographic literature with reference to the handling of all photographic materials and processes, and later as a term for variation from the more traditional "straight" process. In this paper the term straight will refer to a more purest approach to the making of a photograph that emphasizes the faithful pictorial recording of that which is seen with the eyes. Manipulation in this context is photography that allows any and all possible variations from this standard. Manipulation also possesses two principal elements: the camera image …

Streamlining: Functionalism In American Product Design, 1927-1939, Donald John Bush Jul 1973

Streamlining: Functionalism In American Product Design, 1927-1939, Donald John Bush

Art & Art History ETDs

Streamlining, a term commonly used to denote methods of increasing efficiency and reducing waste, is identified with the teardrop shape in vehicles and other American product designs of the 1930s. Because streamlining was applied widely and, at times, unwisely, it has been held in low esteem as a design principle. This dissertation attempts to show that streamlining had legitimate beginnings in hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, that it was an extension of the functionalism that informed product design in the 1920s and that it provided a useful and optimistic symbol of the future to a nation deep in an economic depression.

Le Motif De L'Etoile Dans Les Oeuvres De GéRard De Nerval., Shelley Gregory Crowe Jul 1973

Le Motif De L'Etoile Dans Les Oeuvres De GéRard De Nerval., Shelley Gregory Crowe

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

A study of the star motif in the works of Gérard de Nerval brings out stylistic diversity and stylistic development in the works of the period 1841 through 1854. Before this time the star is hardly mentioned in the work of Nerval.

During the period between 1841 and 1843, Nerval underwent two important experiences. The first such experience is the mental crisis of 1841 during which he was hospitalized for the first time for such an illness. The second experience is the voyage to the Orient, a trip lasting the entire year of 1843. These two events can be seen …

Much Deceiv'd, Much Failing, Hapless Eve:Iconography And Eve In Milton's Paradise Lost., Joanne Lewis Cockelreas Jul 1973

Much Deceiv'd, Much Failing, Hapless Eve:Iconography And Eve In Milton's Paradise Lost., Joanne Lewis Cockelreas

English Language and Literature ETDs

Students inquiring into the literary tradition underlying Milton's Eve in Paradise Lost find ready at hand a great body of interpretive works in the writings of the Church fathers and in the imaginative literature that develops into the hexameral tradition. Present also, however, is a second great artistic tradition, namely that of the visual arts. With the development of iconographical programs from the beginning of Christian history, Eve appears frequently and variously to reflect the intE1rests and prejudices of each age. It becomes instructive, therefore, to compare the portrayal of Eve in the visual arts with Milton's depiction of Eve …

Theology As Metaphor: An Introduction To And Working Bibliography For An Interdisciplinary Study Of Images Of Man In Modern Literature, Frank Arnold Matthews Jul 1973

Theology As Metaphor: An Introduction To And Working Bibliography For An Interdisciplinary Study Of Images Of Man In Modern Literature, Frank Arnold Matthews

American Studies ETDs

Interpretive studies of literature have been attempted by theologians, and theological aspects of literature have been studied by literary scholars. Many such works contain helpful, if limited, sections of references for further study. No significant bibliography has been published, however, which seeks to bring together in one place the necessary resource materials for interdisciplinary studies of theology and literature regarding images of modern man.

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide an introduction to and a working bibliography for an interdisciplinary study of images of modern man. Theology and Literature are the two basic disciplines for which an extensive …

Bullets And Bolshevists: A History Of The Mexican Revolution And Reform In Yucatan, 1910-1924, David Arthur Franz Jul 1973

Bullets And Bolshevists: A History Of The Mexican Revolution And Reform In Yucatan, 1910-1924, David Arthur Franz

History ETDs

Although the Mexican Revolution and its concomitant reforms in Yucatán have been the subject of a number of works in Spanish, they are of uneven quality; however, no narrative history, in English, exists specifically dealing with events in a state which helped finance the Revolution and served as a proving ground for socialistic approaches to societal organization. Based primarily on newspaper accounts, material from Mexican archives, and United States Department of State files, this work presents a comprehensive narrative of events in Yucatán from late 1909 to early 1924, relates those events to the situation in the rest of Mexico, …

The Monetary History Of The Caribbean During The Sixteenth Century, Alfred Glen Humpherys Jul 1973

The Monetary History Of The Caribbean During The Sixteenth Century, Alfred Glen Humpherys

History ETDs

This study investigated the informational and interpretive problems regarding the smelters in the Caribbean, the mint in Santo Domingo, and the money and coinage units both used and produced in the Caribbean. The smelters melted and cast gold, silver, and copper into ingots which were weighed, taxed, and stamped. These smelters became the first centers of economic activities in the Caribbean. Seaports replaced the inland smelter towns as commercial centers when mining production declined and agricultural exports became more important. The mint in Santo Domingo was authorized and established after the mint in Mexico. The types and values of coins …

Blake's "The Mental Traveller" And The Critics, Ann B. Dunlap Jul 1973

Blake's "The Mental Traveller" And The Critics, Ann B. Dunlap

English Language and Literature ETDs

The problem posed by this study is that of achieving a reasonable understanding of Blake's enigmatic poem, “The Mental Traveller,” through a systematic study of the poem's critics. "The Mental Traveller” was selected for such intensive and isolated analysis because it is in many ways a microcosm of Blake's later, larger works. The method used is simply to take the twenty-seven major commentaries on the poem in chronological order, summarize and analyze them. The results of this survey produced insights into the methodology of Blakean critics as well as ideas concerning the meaning of the poem. The methods of the …

An American Anarchist: An Analysis Of The Individualist Ananarchism Of Benjamin R. Tucker., Dale Allen Johnston Jul 1973

An American Anarchist: An Analysis Of The Individualist Ananarchism Of Benjamin R. Tucker., Dale Allen Johnston

American Studies ETDs

Traditional American institutions presently are under attack, and at least three responses to this attack are reflected in contemporary culture. Some persons refuse to acknowledge the legitimate existence of criticism; other persons resolutely sound the call to retreat to the tested visions of the past; and still others begin to assess the alternatives which may extricate society from the prevailing attack. This study is written in the spirit of the latter alternative, and with the conviction that the time has come to assess seriously possible variations upon the capitalistic-democratic theme.

American Diplomacy Toward China, 1945-1948, Margo E. Horner Jul 1973

American Diplomacy Toward China, 1945-1948, Margo E. Horner

History Theses & Dissertations

[In lieu of an abstract, here are the final two paragraphs of Preface]

America's relationship toward China during the postwar years was aptly described by President Truman's summary of his China policy: “The role of this government in its relations with China has been subjected to considerable misrepresentation, distortion, and misunderstanding. Some of these attitudes arose because this government was reluctant to reveal certain facts…."8 Admiral William Leahy, Chief of Staff to presidents Roosevelt and Truman, acknowledged that America’s “post-war attitude toward the Government of China is completely beyond understanding.”9 This writer shares these beliefs and deems it …

The History And Development Of Religious Education In Ontario Schools, John Douglas Schweyer Jul 1973

The History And Development Of Religious Education In Ontario Schools, John Douglas Schweyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis is concerned with the history and development of religious education in Ontario schools, but it attempts to interpret the Ontario system for a readership which primarily knows the system and lives within the cultural and national context of the United States. A glossary is therefore included to explain certain terms which may be unfamiliar to the reader. A comparison of similarities and differences between the Ontario program for religious education and that prevalent in other jurisdictions is provided throughout the discussion. Chapter I presents an overview of the historical situation in Ontario concerning religious education and outlines …

The Egyptian Question And The Triple Alliance, 1884-1904, Calvin Alexander Roberts Jun 1973

The Egyptian Question And The Triple Alliance, 1884-1904, Calvin Alexander Roberts

History ETDs

From 1884 to 1904 the Egyptian question arose in the diplomacy of every major European power, affecting their relations toward one another and being affected in turn by their diplomatic stances toward imperial rivalries and within the European power constellation. Egypt itself primarily embroiled Britain and France; but each of the great powers sought leverage through the international nature of Egyptian finances, the problem of the upper Nile, the Suez Canal, and the vestiges of Ottoman suzerainty. The larger Egyptian question, as manifested by these issues, vitally influenced the formation and continuation of European alignments and alliances. The Triple Alliance …

The Doctrine Of Experience In The Philosophy Of Jonathan Edwards, Puritan Divine, Joseph S. Trachtenberg Jun 1973

The Doctrine Of Experience In The Philosophy Of Jonathan Edwards, Puritan Divine, Joseph S. Trachtenberg

Dissertations and Theses

A number of basic themes suggest themselves as focal points for a study of the thought of Jonathan Edwards. The dissertation is an attempt to argue that experience is one of them, and that an attentive eye to the doctrine of experience will reveal it as the unifying theme of his philosophy. Specifically, at the center of Edwards' aesthetic and religious vision there lies a rich and profound sense of experience, and of the relation of all things to some form of perception.

The evidence is to be found in Edwards' extensive published and unpublished writings. Among the several editions …

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno Jun 1973

From The Tide Pool To The Stars : A Study Of The Evolution Of John Steinbeck's Attitude Towards Good And Evil, Karen Wallace Bondonno

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of my thesis to trace the evolution of Steinbeck's view, in his non-fiction of what the conflict between good and evil consists, along with the development of this concern, and its related stylistic influence, on his fiction, in order to show that Steinbeck's major concern was for man's relationship to this conflict.

I was alerted to the existence of an evolution in view in Steinbeck by the chance reading of his last novel, The Winter of Our Discontent, in juxtaposition with several early novels. In order best to follow this change, then, I read all …

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett Jun 1973

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although neglected by historians Julia Ward Howe contributed much more to American civilization than the words of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." She was one of the founders of women's clubs and a prominent member of the women suffrage movement. At the turn of the century, Mrs. Howe was nearly a household name. She was eulogized at her death in 1910 as "the most distinguished woman in America." Mrs. Howe was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a distinction not shared by another woman until 1930.

Several biographies have been written on the …
