Social Upheaval And Social Change In England, 1381-1750, Sarah J. Cooney Jan 1974

Social Upheaval And Social Change In England, 1381-1750, Sarah J. Cooney

Dissertations and Theses

The social, revolutionary upheavals that frequently exploded on the American scene during the past ten years provided a contemporary, if not sophisticated, framework for the teaching of English history to secondary students. The insights gained from this relational approach emphasized two specific issues during the eras in which England developed into a modern nation: (1) historical events set the stage for social dissatisfaction; and, (2) parliamentary actions reflected the awareness levels that gradually seeped into the social consciousness of the English politic. In isolation, five of these societal insurrections, the Peasant Revolt of 1381, the Ket Uprising in 1549, the …

Oregon And The Blue Eagle: A Study Of The Response Of Oregonians To The National Recovery Administration, John Craig Bledsoe Jan 1974

Oregon And The Blue Eagle: A Study Of The Response Of Oregonians To The National Recovery Administration, John Craig Bledsoe

Dissertations and Theses

The original response of Americans to the National Recovery Administration (NRA) was almost unbounded enthusiasm in mid-1933. But the enthusiasm of the public, business and labor for the NRA noticeably declined by early 1934 and it continued to decline until the NRA was declared unconstitutional in May of 1935. The primary objective of this study is to determine whether the response of Oregon to the NRA followed that of the nation.

Focusing mainly upon the Portland metropolitan area, this study is based on information drawn from newspapers and other primary source materials available for the period during which the NRA …

Rasgos Del Existencialismo En Novelas Selectas De Unamuno, Paul J. Bamford Jan 1974

Rasgos Del Existencialismo En Novelas Selectas De Unamuno, Paul J. Bamford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Unamuno, although a member of the so-called Generation of '98 in Spain, outreaches the other members of this group in certain aspects of his works, They were primarily involved with the problems of Spain itself after the Spanish-American War, and Unamuno in his work went beyond this to explore Being; to explore the existence of the individual in its deepest and most far-reaching aspects. Because of this preoccupation with Being, Unamuno can be placed in another group, as diverse as the Generation of '98, that group whom we today call existentialists, Existentialism touches such figures as Kierkegaard, through whom Unamuno …

Recent Attempts To Reforming Arabic Grammar, Abdul Warith M. Said

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims at studying and evaluating, within a comprehensive framework, the attempts made in Egypt in the last hundred years to reform Arabic grammar. The attempts made before

this period have been only touched on, being a part of the back ground of the recent ones. This study is composed of a preface pointing out why this subject was chosen, its scope and the gap it is hoped to fill; an introduction dealing with the meaning of "grammar" and the developments of grammatical study of Arabic in the previous centuries; four chapters which dealt respectively with the following topics: …

Black Response To Anti-Semitism: Negroes And Jews In New York, 1880 To World War Ii, Isabel Boiko Price Dec 1973

Black Response To Anti-Semitism: Negroes And Jews In New York, 1880 To World War Ii, Isabel Boiko Price

History ETDs

This study examines the presumption that black antipathy to the Jews represents a recent and tragic shift in Negro-Jewish relations in New York City. Through research into written material supplemented by oral interviews, it attempts to examine attitudes, encounters, and situations which shed light on the history of Negro-Jewish relations from 1880 to 1943. The study begins during the closing years of the 19th century when large numbers of East European Jews and the van- guard of southern blacks both made their exodus to New York.

The Negro's first response to the Jew was to notice a parallel with his …

Synchrony, Amalgam And Communion: Erico Verissimo's O Tempo E O Vento As Symbolic Complex, Louis L. Ollivier Jr. Dec 1973

Synchrony, Amalgam And Communion: Erico Verissimo's O Tempo E O Vento As Symbolic Complex, Louis L. Ollivier Jr.

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Erico Verissimo's O Tempo e o Vento has long been considered his masterpiece more, it would seem, by dint of its quantity than its quality, since relatively little research has been done on this novel. The attitudes reflected in O Tempo e o Vento concerning the relationship of time and space and man's affiliation thereto have been previously ignored and only through a structuralist analysis of this novel have these determinations been discovered.

The structuralist approach comprises certain inherent assumptions of an a priori system of knowledge. One assumption is reflected in the structure of language which presupposes for all …

First Symphony For Band, C. William Wach Dec 1973

First Symphony For Band, C. William Wach

Music ETDs

First Symphony for Band is a three movement work for the contemporary concert band or wind ensemble. Each movement is independent, and the form of each should be considered freely developed; not written in the form of a traditional symphony. The first movement is divided into three sections by tempo and style. The first and last sections are in an allegro tempo with the first based on a motive which is found in the first measure and which is built on the ascending fourth. The bridge between the first and second section contains some new melodic material with rhythms presented …

Diaries And Reminiscences Of Women On The Oregon Trail: A Study In Consciousness, Amy Kesselman Dec 1973

Diaries And Reminiscences Of Women On The Oregon Trail: A Study In Consciousness, Amy Kesselman

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an attempt to discover how women participating in the mid-nineteenth century migration to Oregon viewed the westward journey and themselves in relationship to it. It is not a survey of the responses of all women in the westward movement, but, rather, an exploration of the perspective of those women who left a written record of their perceptions or recollections. The thesis focuses on the diaries and reminiscences of women travelling, primarily but not exclusively, in the years 1851-1853.

The introductory material consists of a review of the existing historical literature on women and the West, and a …

The Possibility Of Evil: The Fiction Of Shirley Jackson, John Gordon Parks Dec 1973

The Possibility Of Evil: The Fiction Of Shirley Jackson, John Gordon Parks

American Studies ETDs

The dissertation is a critical study of the fiction of Shirley Jackson. It uses a story published shortly after her death in 1965 to express the key to the main themes and concerns of her fiction: "The Possibility of Evil." It is the thesis of the study that Shirley Jackson's fiction portrays the many incognitoes of evil and the demonic in contemporary life. Through the use of gothic conventions Jackson reveals the contours of human madness and loneliness in a disintegrating world generally bereft of the meliorating power of love and forgiveness.

Each of her six novels is treated fully: …

The Indestructible Woman In The Works Of Faulkner, Hemingway, And Steinbeck., Mimi Reisel Gladstein Dec 1973

The Indestructible Woman In The Works Of Faulkner, Hemingway, And Steinbeck., Mimi Reisel Gladstein

English Language and Literature ETDs

American male novelists, according to the critical commonplace, have difficulty creating fully human females. Critics indict Faulkner, Hemingway, and Steinbeck as prime examples of this deficiency. Though their works represent distinct styles, focuses, and subject matters, these three writers do have some striking similarities beyond their alleged inability to allow full humanity to their female characters. They all express a pervasive disillusionment with contemporary society and project generally pessimistic world images. However, each author has certain optimistic undertones: mankind’s ability to endure is one of them. A recurrent manifestation of this theme ls the indestructible woman.

The indestructible woman, a …

Flyting In Pre-Elizabethan Drama, In Shakespeare, And In Jonson, Carol M. Cochran Dec 1973

Flyting In Pre-Elizabethan Drama, In Shakespeare, And In Jonson, Carol M. Cochran

English Language and Literature ETDs

In its broadest sense the term "flyting" means any wrangling or contention. Generally the term is used somewhat more narrowly to refer to battles of wits in which contestants try to excel ea.ch other in imaginative abuse. The contest aspect of the flyting excludes from its definition asides or one-sided taunts. The emphasis on imaginative abuse delivered for its own sake distinguishes flyting from the debate, which is concerned with issues, and also from satire, which usually has as its aim the reformation of an opponent. Games of abuse have been pervasive, there are battle flytings, court fly1cings, festival flytings, …

Lewis Mumford: Technological Change And The Future Of Man., Allan Helsel Dec 1973

Lewis Mumford: Technological Change And The Future Of Man., Allan Helsel

American Studies ETDs

Lewis Mumford's fifty odd years of productivity has given us what might well be the most valuable history of technology yet written. But, despite its value, the shortcomings contained in his work sometimes obscure its insights. It is my conclusion that Mumford's methodology, while adequate for his descriptive concerns, has produced in his conclusions a fundamental dilemma. Because he has patterned so much of his inquiry on a methodological structure that is based on the division of man and technics into antithetical absolutes, he leaves us without conclusive answers. One is impressed only by the implication that there can be …

Predicting Success In Instrumental Music, Charles A. Baughman Dec 1973

Predicting Success In Instrumental Music, Charles A. Baughman

Masters Theses

This paper represents a study of the predictability of several types of music tests given to the fourth grade students in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. The tests studied were the "Selmer Music Guidance Survey," a Teacher's Evaluation, and an investigatordeveloped self-concept test. The study showed that the correlation coefficient between the self-concept test and the achievement level of the students at the time of the study was the highest. The correlation coefficient between the "Selmer Music Guidance Survey" and the achievement level was the lowest. There were 595 students surveyed in the study, which was conducted between the years 1968 …

The Southern Appalachian Dulcimer, Stewart S. Nutter Dec 1973

The Southern Appalachian Dulcimer, Stewart S. Nutter

Graduate Student Research Papers

The Appalachian Plucked Dulcimer is an instrument neglected by musicologists for several reasons: (1) its history has been clouded in time due to the lack of written information concerning it, and (2) the plucked dulcimer is often confused with that of the hammered dulcimer, one of the early ancestors of the piano. Very little information is available concerning its history, construction and playing techniques.

Pedro De Cevallos And The Luso-Spanish Struggle In The Rio De La Plata (1750-1778)., George L. Archuleta Nov 1973

Pedro De Cevallos And The Luso-Spanish Struggle In The Rio De La Plata (1750-1778)., George L. Archuleta

History ETDs

Based on archival and printed documents and other historical sources, this study seeks to analyze historically the extent to which Portugal and Spain clashed 1n 1750-78 in order to gain territorial supremacy in the Plata and southern Brazil. Spanish efforts to exclude the Portugues3e from the Plata concentrate on General Pedro de Cevallos. He deservedly has been acclaimed "the last blaze of Spanish glory in America.””

A Comparison Measurement Of Law And Gospel In Selected Sermons Of Saint Augustine, Bernard Of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, Phillips Brooks, And Walter A. Maier, David Gunderlach Nov 1973

A Comparison Measurement Of Law And Gospel In Selected Sermons Of Saint Augustine, Bernard Of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, Phillips Brooks, And Walter A. Maier, David Gunderlach

Master of Divinity Thesis

Our study has borne out the fact that Law and Gospel are indeed inherent in Scripture and not just a product of the Reformation, in that we have seen them both actively at work in the sermons we have studied. To a man, all five of our preachers, over a time span of some sixteen hundred years, have preached both Law and Gospel in their sermons.

An Analysis Of Reinhold Niebuhr's Critique Of Martin Luther's Two Kingdom Doctrine, Jack Flachsbart Nov 1973

An Analysis Of Reinhold Niebuhr's Critique Of Martin Luther's Two Kingdom Doctrine, Jack Flachsbart

Master of Divinity Thesis

In one section of his book, The Nature and Destiny of Man, Reinhold Niebuhr constructs a critique of the Lutheran Reformation, and particularly of Martin Luther's theology as the formative theoretical base of Lutheran Reformation theology. ‘One of Niebuhr's specific charges was that the Lutheran Reformation was explicitly defeatist when confronting the problems of realizing justice in the collective life of man. Niebuhr lays a great deal of the blame for this “Lutheran defeatism" on Luther's formulation of the two kingdom doctrine and his application of it to legitimize the suppression by the government of the peasant revolt of 1525.

A History Of The Development Of Lutheran Church—Canada And The Purposes For Its Autonomy, Paul Langohr Nov 1973

A History Of The Development Of Lutheran Church—Canada And The Purposes For Its Autonomy, Paul Langohr

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this loaner is an attempt to understand why autonomy is such an appealing and satisfying answer to the question of Canadian and world mission for a Canadian Lutheran Church. It is an attempt to prove that as an American-based Church working in Canada she cannot work to her fullest potential nor to her most effective capacity.

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale Nov 1973

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale

Honors Theses

Parliament passed its first comprehensive public health act in 1848. Prior to that time Britain as well as other European countries had mostly just tolerated insanitary conditions.

In English medieval towns people threw their garbage onto the narrow streets where animals--pigs, cattle, ducks--roamed, Houses were built with projections over the streets which blocked light and ventilation. There were few qualms about slaughtering animals on the streets. The common method of sewerage was by cesspools which in some cases were built underneath the houses and in most cases were cleaned out only once every several years by the "dust-collectors". Even in …

The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts Nov 1973

The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts

Honors Theses

The woman suffrage movement in Virginia, as in other parts of the nation, must be viewed within the total context of reform which pervaded in the first two decades of the twentieth century in America. The evils associated with the industrial revolution, mass immigration, and the urban crisis produced in the minds of men and women a favorable climate for sweeping sociological changes. Despite the receptive attitudes of individual men and women, the woman suffrage movement could never have been successful without "a heroic mustering of effort....," which has never since been achieved by this same group expect during a …
