One Way Pendulum (The Absurd In The World And The Theatre), Ace Pilkington Jan 1974

One Way Pendulum (The Absurd In The World And The Theatre), Ace Pilkington

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper is about human relation with and reaction to the Absurd. The Absurd seen in terms of the theatre, and the Absurd in relation to human images. The "Absurd" is not easy to define; it is more a condition than a concept--understood more easily by reference to an extensive body of metaphor. Ionesco calls it "... that which is devoid of purpose... . Cut off from his religious, metaphysical, and transcendental roots, man is lost... ." Which is not so much a definition as an evocation of a mood, a mood that comes from living in a world or …

The Development Of An Idea, Marianne Stikas Jan 1974

The Development Of An Idea, Marianne Stikas

Theses and Dissertations

Whereas certain people start with a recollection or an experience and paint that experience, to some of us the act of doing it becomes the experience; so that we are not quite clear why we are engaged in a particular work. And because we are more interested in plastic matters than we are in a matter of words one can begin a picture and carry it through and stop it and do nothing about the title at all.

I believe that this statement by Baziotes has a great deal to do with the way I feel about my painting. Perhaps …

Symbolic Interactionism And Conflict Theory: Complementary Approaches To The Study Of Social Structure, Guy W. Raymond Jan 1974

Symbolic Interactionism And Conflict Theory: Complementary Approaches To The Study Of Social Structure, Guy W. Raymond

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study will provide a brief excursion into the area of sociological theory. The underlying assumption guiding it, although nowhere explicitly stated, is that scientific theory is not a means of determining ‘the truth,' but rather a method of ordering data so that underlying similarities between seemingly disparate events become evident. This assumption includes also the notion that theory determines ‘facts' as much as facts determine theory. The reciprocal relationship between theoretical perspective and data will become apparent when perspectives are compared.

Proselyting Techniques Of Mormon Missionaries, Jay E. Jensen Jan 1974

Proselyting Techniques Of Mormon Missionaries, Jay E. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a review of proselyting techniques in the full-time missionary program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1830 to 1974. Official handbooks as well as Mormon mission publications were the major sources. The writer's experience as a full-time missionary gave additional perspective.

Missionary techniques involved personal contacting on the streets and door to door. Group contacting came through public meetings and the mass media. Church members played a vital role in contacting and fellowshipping nonmembers. Early proselyting lesson plans written in outline form emphasized logic and reason. Later ones were in dialogue form and …

Residency Differentials In Mormon Fertility, Brian Leroy Pitcher Jan 1974

Residency Differentials In Mormon Fertility, Brian Leroy Pitcher

Theses and Dissertations

Although one of the most consistent findings of recent fertility research is the convergence of the religious differentials in fertility, little data have been analyzed to discover the Mormon fertility trends and differentials. This study, based on data obtained on 1,001 Mormon couples, is concerned with describing the effects that the dispersion of Mormon families from the Mormon center in Utah to surrounding areas with various social conditions is having on the fertility of the relocated Mormon families. Data presented clearly show that such families do, on the average, have a lower fertility than do their Mormon contemporaries residing in …

Montesquieu’S Treatment Of Women In His Works, Patricia Arbuckle Jan 1974

Montesquieu’S Treatment Of Women In His Works, Patricia Arbuckle

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

It is my intention in this study to examine Montesquieu’s treatment of women in his works. I have concentrated on his two major works Lettres Persanes (1721) and De l’Esprit des Lois (1748) not only because they are considered his best works, but also because, after reading his other writings that deal with women, I think that the ideas expresed in these two works are clearly representative of his thoughts in general about women. I have also chosen these two works because ach represents a certain period in Montesquieu’s life. Lettres Persanes, written in 1721 when Montesquieu was thirty-two …

The Suitors, A Rhymed Farce In Two Acts, Derryl Barr Jan 1974

The Suitors, A Rhymed Farce In Two Acts, Derryl Barr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

l!!!, Suitors is an original two act rhymed farce that emulates but does not imitate the comedies of Plautus and Terence. Although the play retains many of the basic features native to Roman comedy, its author has modified or disregarded other features deemed less significant, according to the needs of his play. The plot of the play is concerned with the traditional young lovers of Roman comedy, Zero and Blusha, overcoming the obstacles placed between them and the realization of their love. These obstacles include: Zero's impoverishment, which is compounded by his wealthy uncle, Doctor Pomo Pena Cyllicus who, at …

Jerzy Kosinski’S The Devil Tree: A Work Of Art?, Tom G. Colonnese Jan 1974

Jerzy Kosinski’S The Devil Tree: A Work Of Art?, Tom G. Colonnese

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Jerzy Kosinski Is fourth novel, The Devil Tree, is widely regarded as both a technical and imaginative failure. Rather than being an artistic failure, The Devil Tree is in fact a fully mature and variant expression of Kosinski's art. Some of Kosinski's earlier fame was due to a humanistic misreading of his work. But The Devil Tree made it painfully clear that Kosinski 's own ethic-- particularly when concerned with self-realization - was of another order. Interpreted in the full light of his career it can be seen that Kosinski 's The Devil Tree is the logical outcome of both …

Transcendence And Meaning In Sociological Theory: Emile Durkheim's Conscience Collective, The Social Reality Of Berger And Luckman, And Karl Deutsch's Group Mind, David P. Armentrout Jan 1974

Transcendence And Meaning In Sociological Theory: Emile Durkheim's Conscience Collective, The Social Reality Of Berger And Luckman, And Karl Deutsch's Group Mind, David P. Armentrout

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis proposes to trace the thread of transcendence through the theories of Durkheim, Berger and Luckman, and Karl Deutsch. This thread is seen as twofold, as it is attached to the transcendent process, consisting of structural involvement, and also of informational involvement. The process of transcendence itself will be "held constant" by making it the central focus of the investigation. This will allow the other two terms to be examined with respect to it. A discussion of the implications of this study will conclude the presentation.

The Sociology Of Women: A Symbolic Interaction Perspective On Development Of Self, Laurel Armentrout Jan 1974

The Sociology Of Women: A Symbolic Interaction Perspective On Development Of Self, Laurel Armentrout

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The sociology of women is currently an expanding discipline. Production of substantive works on the status of women is epidemic. Although there exists a multiplicity of good short articles drawing on sociological theory, especially theory developed in the field of race relations, there seems a paucity of more extensive theoretical analyses. This paper is an attempt to partially bridge that gap.

The Mental Patient Returns Home: A Study Of The Community Mental Health Care System In Humboldt Co., Ca, Carol J. Harris Jan 1974

The Mental Patient Returns Home: A Study Of The Community Mental Health Care System In Humboldt Co., Ca, Carol J. Harris

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The study contains three parts. First is a brief analysis of the community mental health doctrine embodied in new California legislation, including a reconstruction of the conditions and forces which appear to have shaped this policy. The second part is an inductive empirical analysis of one phase of policy implementation. Here the research focuses on the disposition of ex-state mental patients in Humboldt County, California after closure of the North Coast region’s major state hospital. It deals with the structural problem of how mental patients are absorbed and handled in the community, and examines the translation of policy into action. …

The Social Transformation Of Nature: A Comparative Analysis Of The Siberian And American Experiences, Robert L. Wisniewski Jan 1974

The Social Transformation Of Nature: A Comparative Analysis Of The Siberian And American Experiences, Robert L. Wisniewski

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This chapter has presented different models of order (traditional and high technology), and their possible implications for the natural environment. The thesis that native/non-native conflicts arise over different perceptions of the environment instead of racism per se, was put forward. It was suggested that one primary reason for this was the different time frames within which the respective cultures operated in the new worlds of Siberia and America; the aboriginal populations had a minimum of 10,000 years to adapt to their particular environments, the colonists had barely 300 years. Dynamic historical comparative analysis was selected as the methodological approach. The …

The Slumping Process: A Challenge To Free Schools, John F. Carpenter Jan 1974

The Slumping Process: A Challenge To Free Schools, John F. Carpenter

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Slumping Process was discovered in the context of Pacific Free School, which was a loosely structured secondary school that offered an alternative to the public high school system of education. This study was conducted during Pacific Free School's second year of operation. For those who are unfamiliar with free schools or those who have been confused by the varied uses of the term (Cooper, 1971; Graubard, 1972) a brief definition is in order. Free schools are designed to offer an alternative to local public school systems. Inherent in the ideology of most free schools are the concepts of personal …

Role Definition Of California Campus Ministers, David A. Markwell Jan 1974

Role Definition Of California Campus Ministers, David A. Markwell

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This investigation is one step in the author's thinking about the theological and sociological concerns of religion in general and the campus ministry specifically. As such it is much more than just an objective look at a social phenomenon as required for a thesis in Sociology; it represents, for the author, a personaI inquiry into the Iives and conflicts of campus ministers as the author has come to know them. Approximately three years before initiating this investigation, the author seriously considered becoming a campus minister. It was during this early time, as he visited seminaries, talked with campus ministers, and …

Conrad's "Nostromo" And The Imagery Of Despair, Terry Lane Kimble Jan 1974

Conrad's "Nostromo" And The Imagery Of Despair, Terry Lane Kimble

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Conrad ' s significance as a major novelist having been well established by the present time , one may justly turn attention to a consideration of whether Nostromo, his masterpiece, deserves the paradoxical ranking critics generally accord it as a flawed and essentially inexplicable work of genius . Nostromo is the focus of the present study, which establishes by extensive analysis that Conrad employs a complex imagistic technique, manifesting thereby not only thematic content but also compositional method. Basic to this technique is the tend ency to view a subject in terms of polarities , around which to cluster images …

The Five Old Testament Plays Of The Chester Cycle: A Paradigm Of Salvation-History, Richard Floyd Norlin Jan 1974

The Five Old Testament Plays Of The Chester Cycle: A Paradigm Of Salvation-History, Richard Floyd Norlin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the nineteenth century critics looked upon the English medieval cycle drama, or "Corpus Christi plays" as colorful folk art, having value to antiquarians but not meriting systematic critical attention. Consequently, the plays were treated chiefly from the standpoint of literary history. In more recent decades scholars have been making a fresh effort to understand and judge the Corpus Christi cycles as coherent works of religious dramatic art.

Of the four English cycles extant in manuscript---from Chester, York, Wakefield, and Lincoln·-- the cycle at Chester, though considered by some to be crude and simple, is widely regarded as the most …

The Wide World Of Jack London, Howard Lawrence Lachtman Jan 1974

The Wide World Of Jack London, Howard Lawrence Lachtman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The high apostle of the adventure tale in the Strenuous Age, Jack London has never really relinquished the popularity which made him before his death one of the best known and, most widely read writers in the world. It is true that more than one pontiff of literary taste has consigned him to the same, "obsolete" file that contains the remains of Richard Harding Davis, David Graham Phillips, William Sidney Porter, but such reports of London's demise have undoubtedly been premature. Indeed, the contemporary momentum of Jack London studies affords excellent evidence of the critical rediscovery of an American legend. …
