Mormonism And War: An Interpretative Analysis Of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars, R. Jeffrey Stott Jan 1974

Mormonism And War: An Interpretative Analysis Of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars, R. Jeffrey Stott

Theses and Dissertations

America has been involved in seven major wars, but Mormonism's involvement in these wars has evaded scholarly attention. This has been unfortunate because, for the most part, individual Mormon leaders have taken very definite stands in relation to these struggles, and accompanying these stands have been very definite goals for the outcome of these wars. This, in turn, has prompted many of these LDS leaders to view the wars from a religious perspective.

This transcending religiosity combined the classical Christian wartime positions of the "just" and "righteous" war into one category. The third position however, pacifism, was also utilized during …

The Settlement Of Teton Valley, Idaho-Wyoming, David Brooks Green Jan 1974

The Settlement Of Teton Valley, Idaho-Wyoming, David Brooks Green

Theses and Dissertations

Teton Valley, throughout many centuries, has attracted several occupance groups, each interacting with the environment in various ways for various reasons. Indian and explorer contact did little to alter the surroundings. More frequent contact came, however, as trappers and traders visited the valley to trap beaver and meet in rendezvous.

The end of intensified fur trapping slowed contact with the basin. Government personnel, a painter, a few squawmen and horse thieves were the only inhabitants because Indians, remoteness, and harsh climatic conditions kept others out until 1882 when permanent agricultural settlers entered the valley. Hundreds of people followed, many of …

But the process of how this is done has changed from time to time according to the needs of the people. This treatise covers the history of these changes in documentary form.

A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake Jan 1974

A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis depicts in a visual format the settlement geography of early Utah.

Several topics in Utah's historical geography were mapped by conventional cartographic techniques to give an overview of processes and patterns of settlement.

This thesis points to the utility of maps in portraying information concerning settlement activity. It indicates that visual correlations enable the student to better understand settlement through spatial relationships.

Of special interest are the use of color maps, and the creation of physical relief impressions by photographically screening a raised relief map of Utah.

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell Jan 1974

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

Since the first man perceived and used his environment, there has existed a reciprocal man-land relationship. The physical environment provides opportunities for man's use and also sets limitations. Man's perception and use of his environment is greatly influenced by his culture, which consists of past experience, technology, attitudes, and needs. It is these factors that determine what a man will see as possibilities in land use, and how he will use his environment.

In the case of the relic Mormon Culture Region, Mormon religious beliefs highly influenced perception of the environment. Most visual geographical features of the landscape in the …

Robert Ryland And The First African Baptist Church Of Richmond : Their Antebellum Years, Teresa Payne Jan 1974

Robert Ryland And The First African Baptist Church Of Richmond : Their Antebellum Years, Teresa Payne

Honors Theses

During the antebellum years, the First African Baptist Church had a significant influence on the religious and social life of Richmond Negroes. By the Civil War, several thousand blacks had been baptized under its auspices. In spite of white reluctance to permit an independent organization of Negro worshipers, the black members were allowed to leave the First Baptist Church of Richmond, a fact which countered the spirit of the times and distinguished this church. The Baptist Church in the South was not known for deep anti-slavery sentiments, especially after slavery became profitable. In addition, after 1831 many southern whites were …

Studies In The Comunero Revolution 1520-1521, James S. Amelang Jan 1974

Studies In The Comunero Revolution 1520-1521, James S. Amelang

Honors Papers

My attention was drawn to the problem of the revolution of the Comunidades by a chance rereading of the Bible of Hispanic history, Sr. Jaime Vicens Vives' "Approaches to the History of Spain" (cf. Bibliography). Sr. Vicens notes in his discussion of sixteenth-century Castille that one of the "noble elements" that was "pruned" by the rising orthodoxy was "the bourgeois ideal in the War of the Comunidades" (p. 97). My suspicions were immediately aroused by this remark, as I have always deferred to J.H. Elliott's characterization of the Comuneros as traditionalist, quasi-feudal reactionaries. A hasty perusal of Elliott (cf. Bibliography) …

John Calvin's Eucharistic Doctrine, Martha L. Johnson Jan 1974

John Calvin's Eucharistic Doctrine, Martha L. Johnson

Honors Papers

The Reformation Era witnessed heated debates over the doctrine of the Eucharist. This doctrine was a marvelously convenient focal point for the arguments of the theologians because it embodied doctrinal, ecclesiological, pastoral, as well as ceremonial questions. Thus, many of the basic differences among the reformers and between them and the Roman Catholic Church could be expressed in the forum of the Eucharistic debates. A study of Calvin's Eucharistic doctrine, then, affords the student the opportunity of exploring not only the content of one of Calvin' s basic teachings but also provides a means of understanding many features of Calvin's …

Before their arrival in the Great Basin the Mormons had become acquainted with irrigation methods. Knowledge of irrigation had diffused to them primarily from the Spanish in the Southwest. Thus, they were well prepared to begin their irrigation enterprises in …

History Of Mormon Exhibits In World Expositions, Gerald Joseph Peterson Jan 1974

History Of Mormon Exhibits In World Expositions, Gerald Joseph Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

The history of Mormon Exhibits in world expositions is an important chapter in the over-all accounting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints total missionary program. In seeking more proficient means for accomplishing this task, involvement in world expositions offered a fresh opportunity to which the Church quickly responded. Finances, inexperience, non-acceptance by the world religious community and struggle for security appeared to be significant obstacles to extensive activity in early world's fairs.

Eventually as the Church strengthened, it became less the national spectacle and significantly was given its first real world's fair opportunity in an exhibit sponsored …
