Virginia Architecture In The Seventeenth Century : The Medieval Style, Elizabeth Neal Pitzer Apr 1976

Virginia Architecture In The Seventeenth Century : The Medieval Style, Elizabeth Neal Pitzer

Honors Theses

Virginia colonists recreated the old world in the new in the seventeenth century. They brought to America the medieval style of architecture so popular with the humbler classes of artisan and yeoman in England. People from this element of society, hoping to improve their fortunes, immigrated to the new world. Longing for familiar landmarks, they built homes in the traditional medieval style reminiscent of England. A medieval cottage was also a practical dwelling for the colonial family because it was fairly simple for the amateur builder to construct.

King Charles I During His Trial And Execution : His Personal Life And The Alteration Of His Personality, Jonathan H. Poston

Honors Theses

The "martyrdom" of Charles I has been a subject of controversy by historians, amateur and professional, since the moment the King;s head was severed on the block at Whitehall. The purpose of this paper is not to recount events repeated throughout a large array of books on the subject, but to examine a possible reason for the martyred reputation of Charles and to examine his personality.

Dates used in this paper reflect a need for uniformity, The English Calendar in 1648-1649 was still the Julian (or Old Style), which was ten days behind the rest of Europe. Also, although England …

The United States And The Anschluss; Reactions And Repercussions, Joseph Pociask

History Theses & Dissertations

The American reaction to a critical act of aggression is studied in its many facets. Using a case study approach, the Administration's response to the Anschluss is considered in detail and conclusions are drawn regarding the Anschluss problem specifically and the foreign policy of the Roosevelt Administration in general. Among the repercussions are the diplomatic reaction, the dispute over the pending sale of helium, the Austrian debt, the refugee problem and other problems of a more technical nature which often arise in the forcible takeover of a nation. The State Department and the Administration do not emerge as successful manipulators …

Vitruvian Influence In The Design Of The Fortune Theatre, 1600-1621, James Boyd Crawford Apr 1976

Vitruvian Influence In The Design Of The Fortune Theatre, 1600-1621, James Boyd Crawford

English Theses & Dissertations

Scholars of the English Renaissance generally agree that the various elements of the London public theatres evolved from traditions of medieval stagecraft. It is commonly thought that there was no regular basis of design in the London playhouses and that the theatres were thereby uniquely English in construction. Recent research, however, suggests an alternate theory of the origin and development of the Elizabethan stage: that at least two prominent playhouses, the Globe and the Fortune, were essentially classical, displaying elements of design outlined by the Roman architect and writer, Vitruvius. A reconstruction of the Fortune presented in this study illustrates …

Biblical Servanthood: A Pattern For Christian Life And Ministry, Wayne Schock Mar 1976

Biblical Servanthood: A Pattern For Christian Life And Ministry, Wayne Schock

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Between secular and Christian codes of conduct there has always been a distinction regarding the ideal behavior and attitude. This is especially true in regards to how we see ourselves in relation to others. Friedrich Nietzsche, in the last part of the nineteenth century, proclaimed a new philosophy of man which claimed that the strong were justified in the exploitation of the weak, that the weak were in fact to be used by the strong and to serve the strong. He differentiated between "slave-morality" and "master-morality", and idealized the latter, and judged the "slave-morality" to be inferior and for …

In this paper, when the author of the novel is referred to, the name Proust will be employed, while the main character of the novel will be referred to as Marcel. The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen Feb 1976

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the significant gun control legislation enacted in the United States, and the movement to enact it. It is a contention of this thesis that sentiment favoring gun control comes essentially from urban areas which are most remote from America's frontier heritage, and the common usage of firearms. Sentiment opposing gun control, on the other hand, comes primarily from the West and South which are the areas nearest the frontier heritage. The popularity of firearms in the United States is also due, in large measure, to the pioneer background of this nation. This thesis also contends that firearms …

Institutional And Societal Effects On The Black Student Athlete, Harold Bailey

American Studies ETDs

The black student athlete is one of the most widely criticized, misunderstood and exploited individuals in our society. As a black person who has played the role of a student athlete, a counselor, a graduate student, administrator, and educator at the University of New Mexico, I have had ample time and opportunity to analyze the effects of organized athletics on the black student athletes and other athletes. In my opinion, the black student athlete is considered by many to be the best athlete in the world, but the basis for this claim is strictly physical. The field of organized athletics, …

The Development Of The Mission Of The Church In Acts 1-15, James Heining Feb 1976

The Development Of The Mission Of The Church In Acts 1-15, James Heining

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study was undertaken so that the writer would achieve a greater understanding of the development of the mission of the church as portrayed by Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. Casual reading of Acts reveals many councils, disputes, and discussions. One could get the impression that the early apostles were a diverse lot, and that the church only developed as it did because the strongest wills won the battles. Revelation is a prominent feature in Acts. To what extent did that influence the direction taken? Is it true as some have claimed that Acts can only be trusted …

’ΑδαπάΩ ΘςλέΩ (Agapáō And Philéō Romanized Form) In John, James Lindemann Feb 1976

’ΑδαπάΩ ΘςλέΩ (Agapáō And Philéō Romanized Form) In John, James Lindemann

Master of Divinity Thesis

The point in question is a hard one to settle, because the outcome depends entirely upon where one stands in his approach to the Bible in general and to John in particular. One may see a passage as demonstrating the simplicity of John, while another sees great subtlety and complexity, meanwhile a third sees nothing in the passage at all. Sometimes it’s because the person hasn't looked at all the data concerning the passage in question, and therefore needs to widen his outlook. One goal of this paper, then, is to investigate as much data and interpretations as are available …

The Development And Significance Of Confirmation In The Lutheran Church, Richard Rist Feb 1976

The Development And Significance Of Confirmation In The Lutheran Church, Richard Rist

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the past few years it has come to the attention of many people that the practice of confirmation in the Lutheran Church may need some revision, or At, least some restudy, in order for it to remain in a proper perspective that would be a clear witness to the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions. The purpose of this study is to explore the rite of confirmation as practiced in the Lutheran Church. Much emphasis will be given to the development of confirmation from the early Church until the present practice of Lutheran confirmation in the United States. This …

The Knowing View, Donald Lee Neal

Certain affinities become evident which are found to be constant as properties of the medium. The photograph is examined in relation to its function and meaning levels. First the photograph and its physical properties include an image rendered in a continuous tonal scale from black to white. A photograph has the ability to resolve and define minute details and record more varieties of light than the eye can …
