A Lutheran View Of Vactican Ii On Liturgy And Scripture, Raymond Mueller May 1976

A Lutheran View Of Vactican Ii On Liturgy And Scripture, Raymond Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The fact that the Second Vatican Council has brought vast change into the Roman Catholic Church is obvious. But was the sum of these changes beneficial for its own members and sufficient to remove the walls erected between Rome and historic Lutheranism back in the 16th Century? What, actually, is the direction in which the Roman Church is now headed after Vatican II? This study is an attempt to find answers to these questions.

American Feminism And Social Democracy, Cathy Elizabeth Hinshaw May 1976

American Feminism And Social Democracy, Cathy Elizabeth Hinshaw

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The concepts of both social democracy and feminism will be discussed in detail in the course of the thesis. By way of introduction, broad definitions for these concepts will be offered here. Before attempting these definitions, however, the "central validity" of which Lippmann speaks and around which the definitions revolve should be established. The core of both social democracy and feminism, as they are to be used here, is a particular understanding of the notion of equality.

The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards May 1976

The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The American Indian has functioned metaphorically in American literature at least since his characterization as an agent of Satan in the captivity narratives of the 17th century. From then until now, the Indian has tended to represent either the noble savage of the primitive heathen. Moreover, literary criticism dealing with these images has shown a primary interest in the historical accuracy and fairness of portrayal of the Indian and his way of life. That is to say, relatively little critical attention has dealt with the Indian as metaphor, examining how the Indian functions figuratively in the literature. Two excellent studies …

Graduate Recital, Judy Ann Morgan May 1976

Graduate Recital, Judy Ann Morgan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The recital and its consequent report are the culmination of the Master's candidate's years of study. In order to choose his program he must become familiar with the finest compositions suitable for his vocal characteristics. He must research the musical periods and analyze the individual idiosyncrasies of the composers in order to interpret the compositions he performs. He must become aware of his voice, its strengths and weaknesses, and learn to manipulate it to produce pleasing effects. And most difficult of all, he must discipline himself to do the writing, researching, analyzing, memorizing, and rehearsing which will lead to the …

Tientsin China In 1900, Glen Shagren May 1976

Tientsin China In 1900, Glen Shagren

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The city of Tientsin is situated in northern China at the junction of the Peiho (River) and the Yuho (the Grand Canal). Its latitude is approximately 39 degrees north with a longitude of about 117 degrees east. The unique thing about Tientsin in 1900 was that it was actually two totally separate cities. Tientsin City , or the Native City, was surrounded by a large wall built in 1405. The wall was about thirty feet thick and about twenty-five feet high. The sides of it were faced with brick work four to five feet thick and the center was filled …

Federal Reclamation In Utah To 1974, Glen Shagren May 1976

Federal Reclamation In Utah To 1974, Glen Shagren

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Colorado River Basin of Utah covers approximately 49 percent of the state. A sizable snowfall, particularly in the Uintah Mountains, makes Utah's major contribution to the water flow of the Colorado River. During the spring runoff the melting snow finds its way to the Colorado River, which eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico. In large measure this water has held, and still holds, the key to Utah's development.

Because Utah lies in an arid region, water is an extremely important resource. Upon arrival to the Great Basin in 1847, the Mormon pioneers immediately set about solving the problem …

Twenty-Two Poems, Michael John Penny Apr 1976

Twenty-Two Poems, Michael John Penny

English Language and Literature ETDs

The general theme of Twenty-two Poems is man and environment. This theme is divided into several more specific ideas--man's being defeated by the environment, man's sense of himself as defined by the environment (often an environment is the closest possible definition of its inhabitants,) and man's finally understanding the environment. The order of these ideas is the order in which the poems deal with the theme, and the general progression of poems is from despair to optimism. The first poem, "Bear," deals with a character totally defeated by environment, and the last poem, "Heuros," with a character with such complete …

Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines Apr 1976

Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines

Theses & Honors Papers

My thesis concentrates on Mrs.Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin, a Southerner who published between 1889 and 1899, and who, for years, was considered an obsolete Local Colorist. She is now enjoying a revival of interest which must be attributed to her importance as a writer who exhibited those precepts upon which modern literature is based - those found in the movements of Realism and Naturalism.

With literary roots in the Local Color mode,Mrs.Chopin's early works exemplify, to some extent at least, all of its principles. While she falters somewhat in the dominant literary technique, we find the Local Colorist's emphasis on geography, …

Mark O. Hatfield And The Search For An Evangelical Politics, Robert James Eells Apr 1976

Mark O. Hatfield And The Search For An Evangelical Politics, Robert James Eells

American Studies ETDs

Twentieth century American evangelical Christians have not been known for their social and political involvement with the world. Chapter one of this study provides a brief explanation of evangelical historical non-involvement, showing that the primary reason for this inactivity has been the presence of theological dualisms in evangelical thought. The opening chapter also reveals that beginning in the 1940's and 1950's, evangelicals have rediscovered the social question, and that some are even turning their attention, for the first time, to politics as a possible area of Christian witness. The remaining chapters concentrate on one individual, Senator Mark O. Hatfield, Republican …

Aspects Of Photography As A Means Of Growth, Bruce H. Patterson Apr 1976

Aspects Of Photography As A Means Of Growth, Bruce H. Patterson

Art & Art History ETDs

Photography is a mechanical process which produces a pictorial representation upon a two dimensional surface. In that it produces a particular kind of two dimensional representation photography can be associated with the traditional criteria of art appreciation as far as line, form, tone and subject are concenred. In this paper photography is considered as that and as it acts as a mediator between the photographer and the world in which he lives. Photography is considered as a real time function furnishing contemplative data for later involvement. The questions of our emotional involvement to the world and to that part of …

My Work As A Visual Exploration Of Human Conditions, Robert J. Sanchez Apr 1976

My Work As A Visual Exploration Of Human Conditions, Robert J. Sanchez

Art & Art History ETDs

In this thesis I discuss important goals that occupy my attention as a visual artist. Included with the written material are slides of creative work I have done this semester.

I characterize my work as a kind that exhibits intense human emotions (hatred, violence, depression, etc.), and I make reference to other artist such as Bosh, Beckmann, and various “primitives” who have had similar concerns. Through-out the paper I make clear that it is my intention to visualize various aspects of the human condition, through a personal, figurative art. The human figure is the fundamental subject around which the thematic …

The Published Writings Of Alfred Stieglitz, Sarah E. Greenough Apr 1976

The Published Writings Of Alfred Stieglitz, Sarah E. Greenough

Art & Art History ETDs

The life and art of Alfred Stieglitz, more than any other photographer in the short history of this medium, has been subjected to seemingly endless analysis. However, biographers, thus far, have relied on interpretations of the thoughts of Stieglitz rather than his own published articles. This thesis, therefore, is directed to an extensive analysis of the published writings of Stieglitz and the new insights they afford into the personality of this seminal figure in American art and the controversies surrounding him. Also included is a compilation of all known published works by Stieglitz which number over 260 articles and letters. …

The Circulation Of Elites In Twentieth Century American History: The New Deal As Case Study, Diane Theresa Volk Apr 1976

The Circulation Of Elites In Twentieth Century American History: The New Deal As Case Study, Diane Theresa Volk

Dissertations and Theses

Reviewing the scope and credibility of C. Wright Mills' provocative study, The Power Elite, for a seminar on U. S. in the Sixties prompted my interest in the validity of assessing the historical process by means of the elitist perspective. This coupled with my belief that the New Deal era ushered in a new chapter in the political history of the United States precipitated an investigation of the elitist perspective and how that perspective illuminated the conditions of historical change effected by the New Deal.

Toward A Transformal Icon, John D. Werenko Apr 1976

Toward A Transformal Icon, John D. Werenko

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to provide an outline for a personal construct on the nature and function of painting. This paper is the beginning of a work which will be continually revised in the years ahead. The revisions will be based on the development of my creative work. Two approaches to the form of this paper were available to me. The first method would have been a purely formal and descriptive analysis of the work. This method of writing would have made the surface of the painting more accessible to the reader but it would have done little …

La ProblemáTica Socio-ÉTnica En La Obra Narrativa De José MaríA Arguedas, Amos Leon Bright Apr 1976

La ProblemáTica Socio-ÉTnica En La Obra Narrativa De José MaríA Arguedas, Amos Leon Bright

American Studies ETDs

José María Arguedas (1911-1969) is considered by most critics to be the best interpreter of cross-cultural conflict in Peruvian letters. This dissertation first explores briefly the historical background of the Quechua-speaking peoples of the Peruvian highlands and Arguedas’ relation to them before analyzing his development as a writer. The most recent studies by literary critics indicate that Arguedas should not be included in the list of indigenista authors. However, Chapters III and IV of this dissertation show that analysis of that literary current and of the author’s work leave little doubt about his close affiliation with indigenismo.

James's Pragmatism: The Possibility For Meaning, Virginia Bergin Cravens Apr 1976

James's Pragmatism: The Possibility For Meaning, Virginia Bergin Cravens

Philosophy ETDs

The problem of this study was to determine if William James‘s philosophy of Pragmatism offers the possibility for discovering meaning in life for the person who unexplainably suffers depression and melancholia, and a religious explanation for the evolutionary scientific person who suffers a religious-scientific crisis.

The methods used were to examine William James’s lectures, letters, and books, and research the literature for his interpretation of Pragmatism as a philosophy. The procedure analyzed the possibilities James offered for finding meaning in life, with or without religion, by using the Pragmatic Theory of truth. This involved a consideration of James's belief that …

The Possibility Of Being-With-Others For Kierkegaard's Individual (Den Enkelte), Patricia Morrison Cutting Apr 1976

The Possibility Of Being-With-Others For Kierkegaard's Individual (Den Enkelte), Patricia Morrison Cutting

Philosophy ETDs

Søren Kierkegaard in his journals and papers, as well as in his published writings, emphasized the category of the individual so strongly that it has been assumed by some readers that he advocated a hermit-like existence which precludes relationships with other individuals. Kierkegaard, himself', was cognizant of this interpretation of his writings in 1848 when he wrote in his journal: “I am accused of leading young men to rest satisfied in their own subjectivity.”

Taking Or Making Photographs: Intuitive And Cognitive Decisions Of The Art Process, Edward Kenly White Apr 1976

Taking Or Making Photographs: Intuitive And Cognitive Decisions Of The Art Process, Edward Kenly White

Art & Art History ETDs

The scope of this "exegesis" is to discuss the creative principles underlying my photographs. In order to to so, I first lay down a preliminary introduction to the making of the art product and my own personal philosophy regarding artistic creativity and photography. Then I include relevant data about my educational background which bears on my decision-making faculties. After this grounding in creative theory and definitions of the specific vocabulary utilized, I discuss the two types of creative responses which I propagate when making photographs. The first chapter relates photography to the art process in general terms of a tri-partite …

A Discussion Of My Work, Illona M. Petrovits Apr 1976

A Discussion Of My Work, Illona M. Petrovits

Art & Art History ETDs

The object, as we know it in actual, physical form, has long been a source of visual, emotional, ad sensual interest to me. I have been involved with making drawings from or about various objects and materials for a number of years. The work done during my M.A. program at the University of New Mexico has clarified the importance of the object to myself and to my work, and helped me to define the sources of intrigue within the object -- visually, emotionally and sensually. This thesis is a discussion of the sources for the drawings, my methods of working, …

A Study Of My Work And Its Influences, Vickie Kallies Apr 1976

A Study Of My Work And Its Influences, Vickie Kallies

Art & Art History ETDs

Many factors, both real and imaginary, have influenced my work. Childhood experiences, my magical fantasies, and the work of certain other visual artists have directly affected my choice of subject matter as well as my techniques in picture-making. Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Persian miniatures and naive artists are discussed in terms of philosophies or styles which I consider similar to my own. This thesis is an analysis of these influences and how the resulting images, my paintings, remain unique.

Evolution Of A Theme: From Simplicity To Complexity, Bruce M. Meisner Apr 1976

Evolution Of A Theme: From Simplicity To Complexity, Bruce M. Meisner

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is a description of the processes and steps that have occurred in the development of my work and its change from literal depiction of objects and things to non-representational concerns. Spatially the work has developed through the use of various scales and perspectives. The silk screen medium, with its process of overprint layers of color has contributed to my liberation from traditional spatial statements. Forms, shapes, and brushstrokes have become more imaginative and personal. Color has changed from a local translation to a more expressionistic, rich and intense approach. I have also discussed similarities and differences between my …

La Poesia De Efraín Huerta, Ricardo D. Aguilar Apr 1976

La Poesia De Efraín Huerta, Ricardo D. Aguilar

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This dissertation is the first serious effort towards the evaluation of Efraín Huerta's poetry, and the defining of his place in Mexican letters. The introduction focuses on the lack of any biographical study and on the meager criticism that exists on his very important work. It proceeds to formulate a bio-bibliographical statement compiled from scattered materials in reviews and dictionaries of literature with the purpose of correcting that situation. The first chapter undertakes the structural analysis of the poet's work through the explaining of stratification in his verses, poems, and his books. Stratification is based upon the concept of simultaneity, …

A Christian Telephone Crisis Intervention Manual, John Calvin Kennington Apr 1976

A Christian Telephone Crisis Intervention Manual, John Calvin Kennington

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In our society individuals face crisis situations regularly. From the beginning of life to its conclusion in death, a spider in the bathtub or an unkind remark, life moves from one crisis to another. Some things cause small emotional disturbances while others cause permanent psychological damage. What ever the cause, no crisis is small to the person going through it, and finding the resolution can become an all-consuming task. The problem of dealing with such emergencies is not new. Every generation has had to grapple with crises.

An Analysis Of The Salt Program, James R. Tusant Apr 1976

An Analysis Of The Salt Program, James R. Tusant

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

"We are all parts of Christ's body, and it takes every one of us to make it complete, for we each have difficult work to do." Romans 12:4, The Living Bible.

As Christians we are the body of Christ. Our calling as individuals and our mission as a church will be accomplished only so well as each of us, as parts of the body, are functioning in ministry. We each have God-given gifts and we are called to use these gifts in service to each other and the world. This concept of lay ministry and its importance in the life …

A History Of The Pacific Northwest District Conference Of The Evangelical Free Church Of America, Robert A. Rapp Apr 1976

A History Of The Pacific Northwest District Conference Of The Evangelical Free Church Of America, Robert A. Rapp

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Evangelical Free Church of America is a merger. It should be noted that the Free Church groups that merged in 1950 to form the Evangelical Free Church of America, each had early beginnings in the Northwest.

The first Free Evangelical witness in the Pacific Northwest occurred in the decade of the 1880s, following the historic meetings of organization at Boone, Iowa, and Boston, Massachusetts in 1884. The first churches of both the Swedish and Norwegian-Danish groups were centered in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Progress and growth were impeded in those early days by language and distance barriers. By the time …

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey Apr 1976

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey

Theses and Dissertations

The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.

The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …
