Economy And Society In Baroque Portugal, 1668-1703, Carl Aaron Hanson Aug 1978

Economy And Society In Baroque Portugal, 1668-1703, Carl Aaron Hanson

History ETDs

During the late seventeenth century the ancien regime in Portugal encountered difficulties which fostered tentative movement toward fundamental socio-economic change. Largely in response to a lengthy recession which depressed economic activity throughout Europe after 1670, the government of D. Pedro II contemplated a variety of mercantilist programs as it sought to cope with a worsening situation. These measures included proposed financial support from New Christian merchants, establishment of domestic manufactures, and numerous projects designed to extract greater revenues from Portugal's farflung colonies. Two of these measures--receipt of New Christian funds in exchange for a general pardon from inquisitorial persecution and …

Richmond And The Sturdy Beggar : A Local Study Of Unemployment Relief 1929-1935, Dorothy Herin Brinkley

Master's Theses

While studying the Great Depression's impact on the United States in a graduate se.minar, the period of 1933 and Roosevelt 's New Deal programs for the unemployed appeared to mark a major dividing point in attitude toward public treatment of the unemployed. Searching for a way to investigate this idea, I began a study of Richmond, Virginia, to determine whether Richmond's experience with unemployment during the depression had resulted in any lasting changes in its view of unemployment relief. The method chosen was a chronological study of unemployment relief in Richmond from 1929 to 1935 to accomplish the following purposes: …

Jehan Alain: Selected Organ Works, Mark Weston Unkenholz Aug 1978

Jehan Alain: Selected Organ Works, Mark Weston Unkenholz

Theses and Dissertations

This project is a study of selected organ pieces (from the 24 published) of French composer Jehan Alain (1911-1940). Although a catalogue of works of Alain lists 93 titles, the works for organ represent the composer's major field of concentration during the last six years of his life. Alain, who died during World War II at the age of 29, made a significant contribution to the twentieth-century organ repertory despite his short lifetime.

The procedure of study was, first, to examine existing secondary sources--a biography by Bernard Gavoty, and an article on the performance of Alain's organ music by the …

The Overman And The Unity Of Nietzsche's Philosophy, James Ashton Greig Iii Jul 1978

The Overman And The Unity Of Nietzsche's Philosophy, James Ashton Greig Iii

Philosophy ETDs

The question of unity is the central problem facing the reader of Nietzsche's philosophy. In his apparent lack of system, Nietzsche seems to be confused, contradictory, and chaotic. This dissertation argues that Nietzsche's philosophy is not irrational in these ways but is consistent and orderly, for the concept of the overman unifies virtually all of his work. In explaining how the overman so functions, this dissertation attempts to proceed from Nietzsche's self-reflexive, anti-philosophical and anti-academic perspective; yet, for present purposes, it also recognizes the need to reorganize Nietzsche's non-linear patterns of thought into more conventional lines. It does so by …

The first part of the study compares the written word with its graphic interpretation, utilizing twenty-seven portrayals of Faust in his Study. The second section traces the iconography of the scene in a broader context, using twenty-eight prototypes which correspond to the depictions. …
