Group Painting As A Means Of Self-Expression And Communication For Mentally Retarded Persons: Three Case Histories, Yaeko Steidel

Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations: The Photograph As Fact And Other Aspects Of Ed Ruscha's Books, Henri Man Barendse Dec 1978

Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations: The Photograph As Fact And Other Aspects Of Ed Ruscha's Books, Henri Man Barendse

Art & Art History ETDs

This paper analyzes the fourteen books California artist Ed Ruscha published from 1962 to 1972. Initial discussion of the emergence of Pop Art and the so-called "L.A. Look" form the background for a review of the artist's life and career. This is followed by a brief chronology and descriptions of the books establishing their impact and influence on contemporary art and photography. The publications are discussed in relation to significant movements during the decade, such as Conceptual Art, and it is concluded that they are unique and therefore escape easy categorization. Ruscha's inconoclastic attitude and "styleless" approach to photography as …

Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman Dec 1978

Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman

Art & Art History ETDs

Many of the concepts for my imagery are drawn from an attitude of affirming the decorative in art and a personal choice to further explore those possibilities. Ornamentation can enhance art, not because it is superfluous and not because it can embellish life with beauty, but as in the ornamental arts themselves it can magnify qualities already present in material life and work. In this presentation I present my decorative ideas in art from a contemporary perspective in terms of an art historical context a well as through my individual vision represented by paintings, lithographs, and paper pieces. Both sections …

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa Dec 1978

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa

Art & Art History ETDs

The "picto-reliefs" are a solution for the integration of painting and sculptural elements. This integration is resolved by an abstract format where lines, planes and bands are projected in a constructivist manner. In this paper, an examination is made of the relationships that exist between visual images and "sonorous" images, between visual rhythms and musical relationships, and between color and certain qualities of sound. The bands are a key element in the "picto-reliefs". The bands create a three-dimensional form in the painting, therefore transforming the painting into a relief. The bands also possess ''musical power”, since according to the color …

While federal water agencies claim that these dams provide multiple benefits for the general public, Native Americans seldom receive these advantages.

Romantic Deviance And The Messianic Impulse In American Masculinity: Case Studies Of Moby-Dick, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, And Sometimes A Great Notion, William Carl Baurecht Dec 1978

Romantic Deviance And The Messianic Impulse In American Masculinity: Case Studies Of Moby-Dick, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, And Sometimes A Great Notion, William Carl Baurecht

American Studies ETDs

Masculinity is largely a product of myth that collides with reality in the modern world, evoking tensions, dilemmas, and contradictions, while prescribing idealized virtues. Manhood is defined by custom, mores, taboo, and the collective social illusion called the American Dream, a dream founded upon democratic idealism. This dissertation examines male national character. Renditions of manhood in three novels are discussed to explain the contemporary male ethos. Masculinity is engendered within the culture in either-or terms. However, in various ways, the protagonists of this investigation have been found to express a potential for a polymorphous masculinity, one which adheres to the …

Porfirian Investment Policies, 1876-1910, Kennet S. Cott Dec 1978

Porfirian Investment Policies, 1876-1910, Kennet S. Cott

History ETDs

Studies of Mexican economic development during the era of Porfirio D1az (1876-1911) have focused on foreign investment and the resultant modernization. Little has been written about the policies which promoted development. This study, based on newspapers, government memorias, and the correspondence of Vicente Riva Palacio and Porfirio Diaz, examines those policies and explains how they were formed. Porfirian development policies emerged from a consensus which evolved after Independence. Its major features were that Mexico was potentially rich and that its potential would be realized with the establishment of order and security, development of a transportation system, successful promotion of immigration, …

The next series of photographs was created between 1976 and 1977, shortly after I began my post-graduate studies at the University of New Mexico. The third body of work is entitled "The Interrupted Landscape" …

An Exploratory Examination Of Age, Attitudes Toward Death, Experience With Death, And The Christian Religion, Barbara L. Sanders

Theses

This exploratory study by Barbara L. Sanders investigates the complex relationships between age, personal experiences with death, attitudes toward mortality, and Christian religious beliefs. Motivated by personal and professional encounters with individuals across the lifespan, the author seeks to understand how these variables interrelate and challenge commonly held assumptions—such as the belief that Christians are more accepting of death or that children fear death more due to inexperience.

The research was conducted through a questionnaire distributed among 60 participants across three distinct age groups: adolescents (10–15), adults in their early middle years (36–49), and older adults (65+). The questionnaire assessed …

An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease Dec 1978

An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper is to devise a codification of twentieth-century cadential techniques used by some of the major representative composers. It is because Debussy had such a profound impact upon twentieth-century music -·because of his innovations and influences upon this century's composition - that he is included in this paper. His music will serve as the beginning step away from traditional cadence procedures. Twentieth century compositions which are non-tonal and basically tonal will be studied for their non-traditional cadential procedures. Traditional procedures refer to those classical clichés which one expects to hear at cadence points, such as: IV-V-I; …

This study investigates the influence of Alexander Bain (1818-1903) and Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) upon William James (1842-1910). James had become familiar with the psychological writings of Bain and Spencer early in his career, and he used Spencer's The Principles of Psychology and later Bain's The Senses and the Intellect and The Emotions and the Will as textbooks for his course in psychology at Harvard. In the past, this function was performed by the society's religious institutions.Today, as in the past, people who want solutions.to the problems they experience, or who want to gain pathways to possible solutions, look to their religion, their church organization, their clergyman, to their God. The clergymen of a community are apt to be the first professionals of that community to be consulted when the need for help is felt.

Christology And The Cleansing Of The Temple: Integrating Biblical And Dogmatic Theology, Gerhard Bode

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

Although extremism4 is to be avoided, both Christology "from above" and "from below" can make a valuable contribution to the overall study of the doctrine of Christ. A biblical, historical approach to the study of Christ is vital. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the integration of dogmatic and biblical theology, specifically demonstrating how the findings of biblical theology can be implemented by dogmatic theology to enhance the understanding of the person and work of Christ.

After the war, Blackmar engaged in a number of unsuccessful partnerships but continued to publish music until his death in 1888. He also established business in New York and San Francisco for brief periods. It was primarily as a Confederate music publisher that A. E. The Cosmic Powers In Paul’S Theology, Ebong Sam Ukpong Nov 1978

The Cosmic Powers In Paul’S Theology, Ebong Sam Ukpong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis deals with neither the meaning of the terms nor with the exegesis of the passages in which these terms are found. Nor shall we attempt to re-interpret or relate what Paul said about "cosmic powers" to the modern thought-forms. The purpose of this work is rather to examine, first of all, the terms employed by Paul to describe the forces of evil in the light of his own Jewish background. We shall not be concerned so much with the question: What does Paul mean? as with the query: Where did Paul get the terms and ideas for what …

The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda Sep 1978

The Defense System In Libya During The I-Vi Centuries A.D., Ramadan A. Geddeda

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis will examine the significance of the defense system that was a result of the Libyan wars against the Romans, Byzantines, and the Vandals. For economic and strategic reasons these nations were involved in long and bitter wars which lasted over six centuries. The policy of the long distance military expeditions, which was the main instrument of the Romans in subduing the natives in the early Empire, had failed to achieve its goals. Thus, the alternative was to erect a network of roads and forts in strategic spots such as water points, commanding hills, along the caravan routes and …

Chicano Literature In Spanish: Roots And Content, Erlinda Viola Gonzales-Berry Aug 1978

Chicano Literature In Spanish: Roots And Content, Erlinda Viola Gonzales-Berry

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

One of the most patently visible facets of Chicanos' efforts to assert themselves through a form of cultural nationalism has been a burgeoning corpus of creative literature which, above all, has served as a vehicle of self-knowledge. In their task of accumulating evidence for a collective self-portrait, Chicano writers have explored their past, revitalized and mythesized their cultural values, indicted Anglo culture and confronted the question of what it means to be human. In this study I have examined the works of a small group of writers whose most distinguishing and isolatable feature is their use of Spanish as a …
