Black, White, And Red All Over: Tougaloo College And The Southern Red Scare, Simeon Gates Aug 2024

Black, White, And Red All Over: Tougaloo College And The Southern Red Scare, Simeon Gates

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explain the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission’s use of red baiting tactics against civil rights activists. Civil rights activists in Mississippi weathered countless physical, economic, and reputational attacks. The movement took off during the 1950s at the same time as the nation entered the Cold War. White supremacist southerners fought to preserve segregation through violent and nonviolent means. As the rest of the nation slowly came out of Cold War-fueled hysteria known as the second red scare, segregationists in the south were influenced by it. They cast the entire civil rights movement as a …

Teachers’ Self-Reported Practices Of Teaching Academic Writing In Pakistani Universities, Hafiz Yar

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study has explored teachers’ self-reported practices of teaching academic writing in Pakistani universities. The English language based developmental literacy courses in Pakistani undergraduate degrees are offered as part of the curricula rather than through specialized language centers. The three-course progression of developmental English literacy in Pakistani undergraduate curricula aims to develop academic writing proficiency besides effective business communication and technical report writing skills.

This study has used generic qualitative research methodology (Caelli et al., 2003; Kahlke, 2014; Kostere & Kostere, 2021), snowball sampling for participant recruitment, and a combination of survey and one-to-one semi structured interviews for data collection. …

“Koláče In The Blogosphere: Cultivating Food Expertise Through Domesticity, Femininity, And Ethnicity”, Cathryn Janka

Institute for the Humanities Master's Papers, Projects, and Capstones

Koláče in the Blogosphere is an analysis of food blogs to determine how female food bloggers cultivate food expertise through domesticity, femininity, and ethnicity. Their readership are predominately the adult children and grandchildren of immigrants seeking rediscovery of lost recipes or the completion of partial recipes of loved ones that have passed on. The bloggers are typically recent immigrants themselves or native writers in their home countries sharing recipes with those seeking rediscovery. Gender and food studies scholars have studied women as guardians of domesticity, ethnicity, the world of ethnic cuisine, and food authenticity along with the matrilineal transmission of …

Creating Cartoon Style With 3d Animation, Sean William Meade Aug 2024

Creating Cartoon Style With 3d Animation, Sean William Meade

All Theses

Computer-generated three-dimensional animation is often used to imitate live-action filmmaking and photorealistic objects and effects. However, it is equally possible to use three-dimensional computer-generated imagery to imitate cartoon, hand-drawn two-dimensional animation. Cartoons and hand drawn animation have their own sets of limitations which change their visual style. Animators may choose to draw scenes with elements that break continuity or are not realistic. Every choice from the color to the scene composition is different from now-conventional three-dimensional CGI. With this thesis, I investigate how to create a three-dimensional scene that closely resembles the appearance of a two-dimensional cartoon animated scene drawn …

A Historiography On Women As Anti-Suffragists In The American West (1869-1920), Oluchi Angela Ekwenye Aug 2024

A Historiography On Women As Anti-Suffragists In The American West (1869-1920), Oluchi Angela Ekwenye

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The women’s suffrage movement was initially documented by the suffragists themselves sharing their personal experiences and insights. As the movement’s historiography evolved, it transitioned from biographies of individual leaders to a comprehensive analysis of broader ideological spectrums where scholars dived into what ideas and beliefs motivated these women to fight for the right to vote. The major influence on the women’s quest for political enfranchisement according to historians included educational advancement, anti-slavery movements, broader political issues, and reforms of the period. As the suffrage movement gained momentum, contemporary historians shifted their focus from the influence of the movement to the …

Female Criminal Agency In Early Fourteenth-Century Norfolk, Anna K. Davis Aug 2024

Female Criminal Agency In Early Fourteenth-Century Norfolk, Anna K. Davis

Masters Theses

Medieval women who were on the wrong side of the law expressed agency in a specific and unusual manner. Criminal agency, as it were, was a way for them to express their wants and desires in a way that is no less valid a subject of study than actions that were legally permissible. However, this agency was constrained by medieval notions of women’s capability. This thesis examines women and their crimes found in an early fourteenth-century Norfolk gaol delivery roll to further understand how the men who ran gaol delivery “allowed” women to be criminal. As gaol delivery rolls were …

Vengeance As Piety: The Heroic And Elegiac Devil Of Genesis B, Alisa Heskin Aug 2024

Vengeance As Piety: The Heroic And Elegiac Devil Of Genesis B, Alisa Heskin

Masters Theses

In Christian theology, the fall of Lucifer and his fellow rebel angels details the origins of angelic sin and prefigures the fall of humanity. The narrative had a strong literary tradition in early medieval England, appearing frequently in both poetry and prose. The Junius manuscript, one of four codices preserving the majority of Old English poetry, contains three accounts of the fall of the angels, with the most extensive versions being found in the poems known by scholars as Genesis B and Christ and Satan. Much of the scholarly attention Genesis B receives pertains to its interpolation into the longer …

Psychopathy And Moral Decision Making, Dimitra Kourtesi Aug 2024

Psychopathy And Moral Decision Making, Dimitra Kourtesi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Since the 1800s, psychopathy has been regarded as the absence of morality. The goal of our study was to explore whether psychopathic traits can affect the moral decision-making process in sacrificial moral dilemmas. Participants completed multiple self-report measures of psychopathic traits, utilitarian tendencies, and 16 sacrificial moral dilemma vignettes. After each hypothetical vignette, participants decided whether they believed it was morally right, permissible, and whether they behaviorally intended to sacrifice one person to save five people. Positive correlations emerged among all variables, which allowed us to perform a mediation analysis. Instrumental Harm – the idea of sacrificing one individual to …

A Transcription For Piccolo Trumpet With Historical Context And Methodology: Oboe Quartet Kv 370/368b By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christopher Massa

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This document explores the challenges of transcribing Mozart's Oboe Quartet for piccolo trumpet, emphasizing performance practices. Both oboe and trumpet navigate mid-high to high ranges with fluidity, underscoring the importance of mastering flexibility through study and practice. This document examines the process of transcription by comparing other successful transcriptions.Achieving balance among instruments is crucial due to the piccolo trumpet's volume compared to the oboe or violin. Careful dynamics adjustment ensures harmonious blending within the ensemble, allowing each instrument to shine without overpowering the others. Breath management poses another significant challenge, and while similarities between oboe and piccolo trumpet breath control …

On The Varieties Of Religious Experience In Latter-Day Saint Temples, 1836–1940, Jared Gage Bennett Aug 2024

On The Varieties Of Religious Experience In Latter-Day Saint Temples, 1836–1940, Jared Gage Bennett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

From 1836 to the present, the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have constructed and undertaken rituals in buildings called temples. In the first temple in Kirtland, Ohio, its 1836 dedication was the scene of visions and speaking in tongues, much like those the apostles had at Pentecost in Acts 2. The second temple in Nauvoo, however, had none of these, and the third set of temples built in Utah, with the first completed in 1877, again saw a number of religious experiences but of a radically different form: mainly the appearance of the spirits of …

Lessons Learned Over A Growing Development Cycle In Medical Simulation, Alex Pacheco-San Martin

Master of Fine Arts in Digital Media Culminating Experience

For the last five years, East Tennessee State University’s Department of Digital Media has partnered with the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in downtown Knoxville to create a collection of training modules for their nursing staff. Dozens of students have devoted thousands of hours both inside and outside of the department’s various production courses to build the eleven modules currently in use today. However, development has not been without its hurdles, particularly in moving from one project to the next. Poor documentation and miscommunications compounded with faults in the projects’ design philosophies to repeatedly delay production. While each deliverable was playable …

An Emerging Voice In United States Literature: 19th-Century Poetry In Los Angeles, Savannah Salazar

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The 19th century was a time when British and American literatures

flourished greatly. This period is a favorite among students of English

studies and it has produced works that instill a great sense of pride in

British and American readers. However, in the realm of American

literature, there exists an entire body of literature that has been forgotten

to time and archived away. 19th-century Los Angeles was occupied by

Spanish-language newspapers that produced a body of poetry that has

rarely been researched or discussed.

This thesis will be close-reading poetry from 19th-century Angeleno

newspapers, such …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In 2011, NATO ended the 42-year-long rule of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi, and plunged the country into over a decade of unending strife, while an arc of crisis emanating from Libya struck much of the region. This study examines the United States' geostrategic approach in the Libyan intervention to illustrate the dialectic intersectional relationships between processes of globalization, American hegemony over the world-system, and American foreign policy in the post-Cold War period (1992-2024) with consideration to world-systems analysis to characterize the United States post-Iraq warfighting strategy in Libya as an adaptation of the purposeful destabilization of Afghanistan and cultivation of an …

This thesis pays attention to how racism and discrimination functions to isolate certain groups of people from reaching social mobility. The first chapter analyzes Mrs. Warren’s Profession to demonstrate how Mrs. Warren decision to enter into prostitution cannot simply be reduced to a question of morality, but rather a question of society’s conditions that place women into certain …

A Phenomenology Examining Factors Influencing College Experience Among First-Generation College Student Women, Micki Hall Aug 2024

A Phenomenology Examining Factors Influencing College Experience Among First-Generation College Student Women, Micki Hall

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

First-generation college students (FGCS) differ from their traditional peers in that they are considered unprepared for both the intensity and cost of college. Many times, the families of these students have little background in higher education. As a result, earning a college degree can be extremely difficult as well as isolating for FGCS. Alongside this, historically, the majority of FGCS are women. The need for more research on FGCS women is growing, especially considering current developments in higher education. There is a significant amount of research on FGCS as well as specific groups of FGCS women. However, there is a …

Transatlantic Memory And Identity: The Legacy Of Colonel Heg And The 15th Wisconsin In Norway And Norwegian America, Remi Berg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While memory studies of the American Civil War flourishes, ethnic and immigrant perspectives remain obscured. This project attempts to uncover how Norwegian-Americans remembered the 6000 Norwegian immigrants who fought in the Union Army. It explores the processes behind commemoration of Colonel Hans Christian Heg and the 15th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment from 1914 to 1928. It reveals that Norwegian-Americans commemorated Colonel Heg on three different and connected levels. Nationally, Norwegian-Americans raised a statue of Heg in Wisconsin after the individual determination of Waldemar Ager to challenge nativism and Americanization. Transnationally, Ager cooperated with the organization Nordmands-Forbundet who facilitated the erection of …

Gustav Mahler’S Naturlaut In The Anthropocene: A Musical Landscape Of Early Environmentalism, Alexis Rose

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration of the perceived roles and potential functions of music and art in environmental movements. I focus on Gustav Mahler, a composer historically associated with nature, as a case study of the relationship between nature and art in Austro-German Romanticism and early environmentalism. In the first chapter, I connect Mahler’s idea of nature as influenced by Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Wagner, and Arthur Schopenhauer to the ideas and rhetoric of nineteenth-century environmentalists in Austria and Germany. This context serves as the background for my second chapter, in which I analyze Mahler’s Seventh Symphony through an ecocritical lens. …

Wired For Success: A Neurobiological Approach To Improving The Academic Outcomes Of Middle School Boys, Allison Emery

University Honors Theses

Male accomplishment in scholastic settings has been declining globally for the last decade, leading to long-term consequences for boys and men. Possible neurobiological underpinnings of the gender gap in education are discussed in this literature review. While male and female differences have, in the past, largely been considered socialized, recent science also confirms neurobiological variances between male and female development. These distinctions are assessed for their potential ties to the decline in male academic success, and are correlated to classroom practices, strategies and interventions meant to increase boys' engagement and performance.

Does The Doctrine Of "Separation Of Church And State" Matter?: Examining The Experiences Of Black Christian Families In Massachusetts Public School System, Stephanie Denise Okwudi Aug 2024

Does The Doctrine Of "Separation Of Church And State" Matter?: Examining The Experiences Of Black Christian Families In Massachusetts Public School System, Stephanie Denise Okwudi

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Students have full freedom under the law to practice religion in public schools. This is especially important for Black students, for whom religion has been shown to improve academic achievement and to mitigate many stressors they face. However, due to misinterpretations of the “separation of church and state” (or the “establishment clause” of the First Amendment), schools may inadvertently suppress the religious freedom of students instead of actively providing a safe space for religious practice. For this research, a single embedded intrinsic case study was conducted to determine how the separation of church and state doctrine manifested in the experiences …

Celebrating The Texas Centennial: A National Register Nomination For The Stone Fort Museum, Melanie Caddel Aug 2024

Celebrating The Texas Centennial: A National Register Nomination For The Stone Fort Museum, Melanie Caddel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the 1920s, the idea of commemorating one hundred years of Texas independence sparked an interest in Texas history. Texas boosters held meetings leading up to the 1936 Texas Centennial and planned how to celebrate and bring public awareness to Texas history. In addition to the exposition in Dallas, many towns and cities across the state celebrated the 1936 Texas Centennial with smaller fairs, erected monuments, museums, restored historic buildings, and completed other projects. As a testament to local and state history, the Stone Fort Museum has lacked the national recognition it deserves as a representation of early Nacogdoches history …
