Global Portraits From A Changing Climate: The Influence Of Environmental Storytelling On The Climate Narrative, Alexandra Welch

Capstone Collection

Environmental Storytelling can influence the climate narrative and serve as a catalyst to structurally alter how individuals think about the environment. The medium of the “Eco-film” allows viewers to create intimate connections with the natural world, and in turn alter how individuals engage and perceive issues like climate change. To combat climate denialism this project showcases different hopeful stories in a deliverable video collection, called “Global Portraits from a Changing Climate”. Two of these videos will be filmed in Germany, featuring the Waldrapp Team Research and Conservation project. One of the videos from Waldrapp Team will touch on the social …

Spending The Peace Dividend: Nato And The Failures Of American Diplomacy, Caleb Batman

Theses and Dissertations

Recent years have seen a massive increase in available resources pertaining to US-Russian diplomacy in the years immediately following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Using these newly available resources including diplomatic cables, declassified transcripts, and personal correspondence between President Clinton of the United States and President Yeltsin of the Russian Federation the author attempts to illustrate how the White House missed a chance for reconciliation with Russia during the first Clinton term. Additionally, this paper illustrates how it was not merely bad diplomacy that led to a resumption of Cold War hostilities, but willful policy in Washington that sought …

Women As Anti-Suffragists In The American West (1869-1920), Oluchi Angela Ekwenye Aug 2024

Women As Anti-Suffragists In The American West (1869-1920), Oluchi Angela Ekwenye

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The struggle for women’s suffrage in the American West was just as complicated as that of other parts of the United States with a lot of women on both sides of the issue. However, within the narrative of women’s suffrage lies an overlooked story that excludes the role of women who campaigned against the women’s suffrage movement in the American West. From the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, a significant portion of women who were described as “antis” vehemently opposed the quest for the enfranchisement of the female population in the American West. This opposition emerged based …

Sustainable Development Of Private Art Museums In China: A Narrative Inquiry Study, Chaoran Li Aug 2024

Sustainable Development Of Private Art Museums In China: A Narrative Inquiry Study, Chaoran Li

Education (PhD) Dissertations

Private art museums are a relatively new phenomenon in China, having first appeared in the 20th century. This brief timeline in the larger history of art museums, coupled with the fact most Chinese private art museums close after just a few years of operation, has led many to question how to promote the sustainability of these institutions. These questions became even more pronounced with the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, which brought a greater sense of uncertainty to the museum industry and society at large. This dissertation inquires similarly, asking how sustainability is conceptualized by Chinese private art museum …

Lost In The (Re)Process: Challenging Constructions Of Downtown Louisville Through The Urban Renewal Commission Photograph Collection., Cassidy Meurer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis chronicles the historical significance of the Urban Renewal Commission photograph collection, traces the history of racial capitalism in Louisville through research at Metro Louisville Archives & Records Center, and argues for alternative ways of organizing, digitizing, and presenting these archival materials in the University of Louisville’s Archives & Special Collections. I describe my methodology for breaking the photographic materials from their original order, going against typical archival processing methodologies, with the aim that the collection will more accurately represent the city’s strategic displacement of Black Louisvillians and civic prioritization of capital efficiency over community. This work emphasizes the …

Mobilizing Feminist Politics In Yugoslavia: Sanja Iveković And Vlasta Delimar’S Performance Art., Candyce Sturgeon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the radical performance works of Yugoslavian artists Sanja Iveković and Vlasta Delimar. Three performances by each artist are analyzed and juxtaposed with one another. These performances include Triangle, 1979, He is Looking at Me all the Time, 1979, and Nessie, 1981 performed by Sanja Iveković along with This was Me in 1980 when Comrade Tito Died, 1980, Visual Orgasm, 1981, and Tied to a Tree, 1985 performed by Vlasta Delimar. Throughout the paper I argue that these performances by Iveković and Delimar, along with their differing stances on feminism, create a multifaceted …

The Architect Of The Past: Heinrich Himmler's Remaking Of Germany's History., Chad M. White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the complex interplay between historical narratives, ideological manipulation, and cultural artifacts in Heinrich Himmler’s efforts to reshape Germany’s history during the Nazi regime. The study shows how Himmler used historical revisionism to mythologize Germanic history to support Nazi ideology. Himmler used the Ahnenerbe, an SS organization, to research and propagate distorted narratives, fabricating artifacts to legitimize the Aryan myth and assert Germanic superiority. Influenced by movements like the Völkisch Movement, Himmler's ideology relied on pseudo-historical narratives to shape public perception and Nazi policies. The study analyzes Himmler's writings and the spatial transformation of sites like Wewelsburg Castle …

How Comics Impact The Process Of Instructional Design, Aaron M. White Aug 2024

How Comics Impact The Process Of Instructional Design, Aaron M. White

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite growing evidence and professional consensus of the educational benefits of comics, the medium has not received much explicit attention within instructional design literature. This very lack of attention leaves instructional designers (IDs) and subject matter experts (SMEs) without the necessary means to integrate comics into higher education curriculum. Drawn from theoretical and empirical evidence found in Mayer’s Multimedia Learning (2021) and Cohn’s The Visual Language of Comics (2014), this dissertation explored how incorporating comics as anchor text into three different courses (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) at three different higher education institutions in the Midwest impacted the dynamics of the …

The Q Is Chaos: Freedom 4 Artists Is Ostranenie, Cristian J. Alba-Dominguez Aug 2024

The Q Is Chaos: Freedom 4 Artists Is Ostranenie, Cristian J. Alba-Dominguez

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In this thesis, I suggest that ostranenie is the artistic equivalent of chaos and it can be used by artists to grab and maintain the perception of an audience through the disruption of norms or pre-established conditions. Ostranenie, the device of art introduced by Russian Formalist Victor Shklovsky in his essay, “Art as Device,” is a device that gives absolute freedom to the creative person who isn’t afraid to use it to create original and engaging work. In the novel, 1Q84, Haruki Murakami utilizes ostranenie to tell a simple love story in a manner that prolongs the reunion of his …

Examining The Theory Of Planned Behavior As An Explanation For Why Some Creatives Learn To Use Generative Ai Tools, Navrose Bajwa Aug 2024

Examining The Theory Of Planned Behavior As An Explanation For Why Some Creatives Learn To Use Generative Ai Tools, Navrose Bajwa

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can create art which earlier was restricted to humans. This involvement of AI in creating art poses risks of automation for the arts and design industry. One way with which artists can respond to this threat is to engage in proactive coping behavior and learn to use generative AI (GAI) for their work. Using an expanded version of Theory of Planned Behavior, this study looked at the predictors of graphic designer’s intentions to learn how to use GAI for art and design work. It was hypothesized that attitudes, social norms, perceived behavioral control and automation awareness would …

Everything And Nothing: Exploring The Connection Between Gender Microaggressions In The Family Of Origin And Intimate Adult Relationships, Stephanie Dizenzo-Priestley

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Experiences with gender microaggressions have been shown to negatively impact mental health and self-esteem in women. Cisgender women are faced with pervasive gender microaggressions throughout life, including within their homes and families. This study sought to explore cisgender women’s experiences with gender microaggressions within two critical family systems, the family of origin and intimate adult relationships. Utilizing Postmodern Feminist Theory and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, three overarching themes were identified related to how cisgender women experience and make meaning of gender microaggressions: 1) Rigid Roles and Expectations for Women; 2) Impact of Power Dynamics; and 3) Identifying Pathways to Lasting Change. …

Shared Shame And Affect In Nella Larsen's Passing, Claudia Ludwick Aug 2024

Shared Shame And Affect In Nella Larsen's Passing, Claudia Ludwick

All Theses

This project focuses on the negative affect of shame in Nella Larsen’s 1920s American novel, Passing. While shame is a universal feeling everyone feels, the project argues that Larsen’s two main characters, Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, feel a specific type of invisible shame that pulls on them differently. For Irene, this shame is reactive and aggressive, but for Clare, this shame is passive and often ignored. The project details where and how the shame manifests for each character, particularly focusing on how shame can be seen visibly and invisibly in and on the body. Because no other character recognizes …

A Retrospective Of “Comfort Culture:” A Paradigmatic Study On The Creation Of The “Comfort Women” System Constructed By The Imperial Japanese Military From 1932 To 1945, Emma Nicolini

All Theses

From 1932 to 1945, the Imperial Japanese military sexually enslaved approximately two hundred thousand Asian women from Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Philippines. This institution was known as the comfort women system, which the Imperial Japanese government created to ensure the sexual and mental health of Imperial Japanese military personnel. This provision of comfort for Imperial Japanese military personnel was enabled by cultural influences introduced in the Early Modern period of Japan, which normalized a contemptuous attitude toward sexual labor. This blend of Early Modern Japan, as well as the beliefs that facilitated the need for comfort women, …

Friendship Intimacy: A New Approach To Valuing Friendship, Benjamin Lugo Aug 2024

Friendship Intimacy: A New Approach To Valuing Friendship, Benjamin Lugo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a tradition in moral theory that holds that friendship is necessary for living well. That is, if our aim is to live a good life or a flourishing life, then that life will include building and maintaining friendships. Aristotle and Plato both share this view and express similar claims about the necessity of friendship for the pursuer of a good life. Contemporaries of both have spent time interpreting their claims and have long commented on the intrinsic value of friendship. I pick up on a strand of the debate by exploring the purported value of friendship. While considerable …

What Is A Person? How Does One Become A Morally Good Person? The Intuitive View!, Tancredo Tivane Aug 2024

What Is A Person? How Does One Become A Morally Good Person? The Intuitive View!, Tancredo Tivane

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis centers around two philosophical problems: the concept of a person and the process by which one becomes a morally good person. Drawing on the works of philosophers such as Harry Frankfurt, Strawson, and A.J. Ayer, it begins with an inquiry into what it means to be a person. It argues that while humanhood, with its rational capacities, is a contingent rather than a necessary condition, it can serve as an accurate predictor of personhood. The thesis posits that personhood is an achievement rather than an inherent state, facilitated by interactions within a social framework that refine these rational …

Understanding The Livelihood Diversification Of Arkansas Women Involved In Agricultural Production, Oluwatoyin Elizabeth Abati Aug 2024

Understanding The Livelihood Diversification Of Arkansas Women Involved In Agricultural Production, Oluwatoyin Elizabeth Abati

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Agriculture as a livelihood activity entails significant risks and uncertainties, which expose agricultural households to a low standard of living, poverty, and a lowering of their food security status. Women's responsibilities in agriculture are expanding and becoming more critical, and farm women are now broadening their duties to include roles off-farm. More research is needed in Arkansas about agricultural women's roles, challenges, and essential job characteristics. Using a quantitative survey, this research aimed to provide a resource on how women involved in agricultural production diversify their livelihoods. Participants were asked to describe their livelihood diversification by identifying their activities on …

Creation Of Eco-Terrorism: A History Of Actions By The Earth Frist!, Earth Liberation And Animal Liberation Front From The 1980s-2000s, Zachary Smith, Zachary C. Smith

History Theses

From the nineteen eighties to the early two thousands, the United States saw a raise in awareness and activity from ecological activist groups. The United States government labeled ecological activist groups as the one domestic terrorist group that was the largest threat to the safety and well-being of the American public. Given the current environmental crisis facing the world, there should be encouragement and rise of green activism not an active dismissal. How did these activists become the number one on the United States government list? The groups that are primarily responsible for this claim are Earth First!, Earth Liberation …

The Ambivalent Muse: Women's Music In Euripides, Christopher Robertson Aug 2024

The Ambivalent Muse: Women's Music In Euripides, Christopher Robertson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the use and depiction of women's music in three plays of Euripides. Chapter One looks at the intersection of music, magic, and gender in Medea, linking the chorus' discussion of muse-granted female sophia (wisdom, authoritative knowledge) to Medea's skill in magic. Chapter Two proposes a novel interpretation of the first stasimon of Trojan Women, arguing that the famous kainoi hymnoi of line 512 -- translated here as "new and woeful songs" -- are emblematic of the play's depiction of lament. Chapter Three examines various ways in which the choral odes of Bacchae reflect the threatening …

Desire Lines: Reading Queerly Through The Forests Of Medieval Love Literature, Brianna Skye Oliver Aug 2024

Desire Lines: Reading Queerly Through The Forests Of Medieval Love Literature, Brianna Skye Oliver

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation conducts queer eco-sensitive readings of a selection of medieval love texts in Middle English and Old French. Informed in turns by the works of feminist, queer, and ecocritical scholars, each chapter engages with a different iteration of literary queerness by bringing the representation of natural spaces and objects (especially the forest) to the fore and reading through nature depicted in the texts. The readings all share a broad goal of inviting modern audiences to play with desire and its manifestations within each text to make meaning and compel intimacy between the work and its current audience. Chapter 1 …

White Guilt: An Ameliorative Proposal, William Moix Aug 2024

White Guilt: An Ameliorative Proposal, William Moix

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Common in the philosophy of race literature – notably those centered on critiques of whiteness and the oppressive structures therein – we find that guilt is looked upon rather divisively. On one hand, representative of what I call the “abolitionist” position, we find that such states serve no function but to stifle progress towards social justice. Feeling such emotions in relation to one's race seems to lead necessarily to a retreat from the social endeavor of racial justice, resulting in selfish requests for absolution. On the other hand, representative of what I call the “proponent” position, we find prescriptions to …

Moore’S Paradox, The First-Person, And Self-Knowledge, Matthew Warren Aug 2024

Moore’S Paradox, The First-Person, And Self-Knowledge, Matthew Warren

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that Wittgenstein’s remarks on Moore’s paradox can be useful in resolving several debates concerning self-knowledge, particularly as that knowledge is manifested in avowals of belief, taking the form of sentences like “I believe that P”. Usually, sentences like these are taken to have a special first-person authority, epistemically privileged in comparison to their third-person counterparts ("He believes that P") and yet free from any reliance on evidence or observation in order to be made justifiably. It is also assumed that these avowals are functioning uniformly as reports on the speaker's mental state. Often, accounts of self-knowledge are …
