Opposites Attract: The Melding Of Jazz Harmony And Pop Songwriting Sensibilities In The Music Of Norah Jones And Jamie Cullum, John Paciga
Composition/Recording Projects
Modern commercial songs have become increasingly difficult to categorize within a singular genre. This trend, as well as my own mixed musical background, inspired me to investigate the ways in which the seemingly disparate styles of pop and jazz can be synthesized. My research focuses primarily on how this synthesis is achieved in the musical works of Norah Jones and Jamie Cullum, two of the most successful crossover artists of the early 21st century. Drawing on musical elements from each of Jones's and Cullum's catalogs, I wrote and recorded five original songs. My analysis of these songs will help to …
Beyond The Didactic: The Morally Edifying Impact Of Pure Aesthetic Experience, Hayley A. Madden
Beyond The Didactic: The Morally Edifying Impact Of Pure Aesthetic Experience, Hayley A. Madden
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
During the late nineteenth century, British artists and writers sought to create a new kind of beauty to combat the growing tedium and materiality of industrialization. This movement became known as Aestheticism, and those who practiced its tradition believed art should be created with the sole intention of eliciting aesthetic pleasure. According to the Aesthetes, art is amoral by nature and any attempt to infuse social commentary into an artwork is fundamentally wrong, adhering to the concept of “Art for Art’s Sake.” This research argues that despite the artists and writers of the Aesthetic Movement claiming that their works exist …

“Every Mother A Missionary”?: The Vlogs Of Mormon Mothers, Celia Golden
“Every Mother A Missionary”?: The Vlogs Of Mormon Mothers, Celia Golden
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) places high expectations on mothers because their role in the church is to rear children into godly adults. When their lives are made public through social media, Mormon mothers online avoid religious expectations by withholding information about their Mormon faith and scarcely showing their husbands on-camera. Mormon husbands are expected to be the providers for the family, but as demonstrated through mothers’ vlogs on Instagram, husbands’ erasure allows for mothers to market their expertise to others as a paid product to earn their own revenue. Through descriptive coding, this study …
An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Investigation Of Consciousness, James Guy Lundie
An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Investigation Of Consciousness, James Guy Lundie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Questions of phenomenal consciousness have troubled intellectuals for millennia. Theologians, philosophers, and scientists continue to grapple with the problem of how our minds interact with our brains and bodies. From Anaxagoras and Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas, Nagel and Goff, and Koch and Hameroff, the brightest among us have been unable to solve the riddle of how we are conscious, unique, self-aware thinking beings. Uniting our efforts by considering the reasoning of interdisciplinary scholars and integrating the thoughts of others with our own can only enhance our chances of success. This paper offers a pathway toward a multidisciplinary theory of consciousness …

The Sound Of Disruption: The Effects Of Music Streaming Services And Technological Change On The Music Industry, Adam J. Kays
Honors Thesis
Technological changes within the music industry, particularly through streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, have completely altered how artists and labels function in 2025. This thesis examines the change from physical to digital music consumption, the economic realities of streaming royalties, and the mental and physical effects on artists in the modern age. Additionally, this thesis will discuss the utilization of playlisting methods and algorithms, as well as how artists and labels utilize these new features to their advantage. Through this research, this study analyzes and criticizes the sustainability of music streaming models.
Le Kabary Et Le Fokonolona Au Grand Écran, Josh E. Coster
Le Kabary Et Le Fokonolona Au Grand Écran, Josh E. Coster
French Honors Papers
The cultural elements of kabary and fokonolona have played varying roles in Malagasy society and history. Once appropriated by the forces of colonization, these elements today occupy a liminal space in Malagasy culture but undoubtedly represent parts of the island’s heritage. In this project I argue that film can be seen as a new kind of kabary wherein Malagasy films become the cultural expressions themselves not only through their representations of the essential elements of the kabary, but by their inherent tendencies towards social, political, and environmental activism. The community that these filmmakers create represents a modernization of the traditional …

The Conservative Approach To Informed Consent: The Evidentiary Model And An Antidote To The Problem Of Framing Effects In Medical Decision-Making, James D. Polk
Honors Theses
Since the latter part of the 20th century, there has been a gradual but significant shift of the doctor-patient relation from paternalism to a more patient-centric approach. As such, informed consent – the legal and moral requirement that a physician fully disclose relevant details to their patient and gain their consent – is a central doctrine to patient-centric care. Gone are the days of the doctor governing the patient: the patient is now considered a valuable and important decision-maker. Achieving informed consent is the foundation of patient centric medicine. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that philosophical consideration be …
Drag Attack, Chase Jones
Drag Attack, Chase Jones
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Drag Attack is a single-player beat 'em up game built for PC. Players take on the role of Chicago drag artist Molly Jolly Christmas, as she fights to stop the evil president Billy the Bigot from passing HB69, a bill that will ban drag once and for all. With mechanics inspired by classic games in the genre, and the addition of drag-inspired actions like purse smacking and gown spinning, the game provides a cathartic outlet for queer gamers who are ready to fight back against hateful rhetoric and legislature. Enemies are based on proponents of anti-drag legislation, such as conservative-leaning …

Examining Shifts In Reader Identity Through Explicit Fluency Instruction, Mercedes Allen
Examining Shifts In Reader Identity Through Explicit Fluency Instruction, Mercedes Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Fluency-a reader's ability to read accurately, with correct expression, speed, and prosody-is a main component of the science of reading (Rasinski, 2016). Although the science of reading has been a significant topic surrounding the issue of improving literacy in schools, there is little focus on the teaching of fluency at the secondary level (Shanahan, 2021; Steinle, 2022; Wexler, 2008) and how fluency influences reader identity. This article seeks to explore this question through the lens of the dialogical self (Hermans, 2001). In this case study, three 11th grade students participated in a series of lessons targeting components of fluency-accuracy, speed, …
Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl
Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl
Honors Projects
When first looking at a children’s book, it appears to be a simple creative project. However, when one finds out the components that go into making one, it becomes clear that simplicity is deceiving. Research, ideation, rough drafts, and scripts are just a few of the necessary components for the finished product, and each one of these components can take multiple days or weeks to complete. This essay is a reflection on my experience of creating a picture book in one semester as I attempt to answer the questions “What if the most efficient process for creating a children's picture …
Epic Fantasy As A Postsecular Genre: The Stormlight Archive's Approach To Religion And Belief, Liz Busby
Epic Fantasy As A Postsecular Genre: The Stormlight Archive's Approach To Religion And Belief, Liz Busby
Theses and Dissertations
Epic fantasy as a genre has often been neglected due to its perceived conservative roots that clash with critical reading practices. This paper proposes that a postsecular lens may be more suitable to the critical study of epic fantasy and examines perhaps the most popular contemporary epic fantasy, Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, through a postsecular lens, First, the paper examines how the Stormlight Archive combines the premodern, fantastical worldview with modern and post-modern concerns to reinvigorate its exploration of the religious "big questions" through a renewed focus on the spiritual nature of the individual. Next, it examines how Sanderson presents …

"To Keep Men In Awe": Religious Subversion And Anti-Providentialism In Marlowe's Tamburlaine And The Jew Of Malta, Will White
Honors Theses
In early modern England, the term “atheist” held quite a different meaning from its modern usage. Most often, it referred not to person who rejected God’s existence, but who rejected the validity of divine providence: the notion that God exerts control and order over the events of Earth. This understanding of atheism informs the reading of the 16th century playwright Christopher Marlowe, whose connection to atheistic ideas is perhaps more visible than any of his contemporaries. In this thesis, I argue that the unifying element of religion in Marlowe’s drama is anti-providentialism – a rejection of providence. I examine two …

Harnessing Strengths Through Peer Coaching: Supporting The Well-Being Of Novice Esl Teachers, Joclyn M. Farrales
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the effects of strengths-based peer coaching on novice ESL teacher well-being. Language teachers often face challenges in job security, teacher and financial status, institutional demands, and burnout. Novice ESL teachers especially face concerns about balancing teaching and student roles, building knowledge of the realities of teaching, and scaffolding a support system. The Virtues in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) was used to identify participants' strengths, and teachers were assigned a peer to collaborate with who shared similar strengths. These teachers met with their assigned peer coach eight times throughout the semester to discuss ways of implementing strengths …
A Comparison Of The Relationship Between Campus Writing Centers And Developmental Writing Programs At Two- And Four-Year Institutions, Kiley Truex
English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Throughout the history of American composition instruction in higher education, the question of how best to support students who struggle with or come into college unprepared for academic writing has been a debated one. Two of the most commonplace models for additional student writing support are basic writing courses and writing centers, and institutions often have both. Furthermore, there is also a distinction between writing education at the four-year college level and writing education at the two-year college level, and this distinction comes into particularly sharp focus when it comes to examining both basic writing pedagogies and well as the …

Women living with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience inequities, policy imbalance, and the feeling of overwhelming unfairness from those who govern policy. This qualitative phenomenological study was developed to focus on woman living with the disability of cognitive impairments in the MS paradigm that are not discussed, inadequately measured nor treated, making it difficult for those living with the disease to remain in the workforce and gain access to healthcare. Little research exists that identifies the unmet needs of those with MS and their relationship to cognitive impairments. Due to the progression of the cognitive impairments those living with MS have …
Focus On Form: Perceptions Of Portuguese Immersion Teacher When Implementing The Capa Model, Priscila Isabel Rebicki Prestes
Focus On Form: Perceptions Of Portuguese Immersion Teacher When Implementing The Capa Model, Priscila Isabel Rebicki Prestes
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers' perceptions when implementing the CAPA Model, a structured Focus on Form Instruction (FFI) approach aimed at improving grammatical accuracy in content-based learning. While immersion students develop strong communication skills, research highlights persistent grammatical inaccuracies due to the emphasis on meaning-based instruction. The CAPA Model seeks to bridge this gap by integrating explicit grammar instruction, fostering metalinguistic awareness, and enhancing linguistic accuracy without detracting from content learning. Findings reveal that teachers recognize the model’s benefits but face challenges such as limited planning time, a lack of pre-adapted materials, and difficulties implementing all …
The Most Beautiful Under Heaven: Selecting Views Of Modern China Through Travel Photography In Liangyou Huabao (The Young Companion), 1926-1937, Anne Marie Watson
The Most Beautiful Under Heaven: Selecting Views Of Modern China Through Travel Photography In Liangyou Huabao (The Young Companion), 1926-1937, Anne Marie Watson
Theses and Dissertations
Liangyou huabao (The Young Companion) was a prominent Chinese pictorial magazine, with 174 issues published monthly between 1926 and 1945. Liangyou entertained its Chinese audience with a variety of photographs documenting modern life. This thesis examines photographs of domestic travel photography in the magazine, arguing that editorial captions encouraged readers to associate images of China with allusions to traditional art and aesthetics. This occurred within a historical context where modernity was often associated with the pressures of Westernization, and where Chinese culture and civilization was sometimes characterized as outdated or irrelevant. By using travel photography to demonstrate how traditional culture …
A Tale Of Two Faiths: Contemporary Protestantism In The Spanish-Speaking Catholic World, Jackson B. Mitchell
A Tale Of Two Faiths: Contemporary Protestantism In The Spanish-Speaking Catholic World, Jackson B. Mitchell
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the shifting religious landscape of the Spanish-speaking Catholic world through the lens of Protestant growth, particularly Pentecostal and Evangelical movements. Beginning with a historical account of Spain’s Catholic hegemony and its colonial export of Catholicism to Latin America, the study traces how Latin America’s religious identity has gradually diverged from its Spanish roots. Over the past half-century, Protestantism has grown rapidly across Latin America, challenging Catholic dominance and reshaping the region’s spiritual and social fabric.
The thesis then turns back to Spain, where rising immigration from Latin America and changing cultural dynamics have facilitated the reintroduction of …
Lived Experiences Of Adult Christian Men Navigating Religious Beliefs And Internet Pornography Use, Chiante' Josiah Jemison
Lived Experiences Of Adult Christian Men Navigating Religious Beliefs And Internet Pornography Use, Chiante' Josiah Jemison
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Religious individuals who engage in pornography use often experience guilt, shame, and cognitive dissonance, creating internal conflict that may lead to anxiety, depression, and strained personal and spiritual relationships. Guided by cognitive dissonance theory, this qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 15 adult Christian men (ages 18-44) who struggled with problematic internet pornography use and scrupulosity. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using Yin’s five-step process to identify recurring themes. Findings revealed that faith served both as a source of strength and a contributor to emotional distress, with participants experiencing cycles of guilt, secrecy, and relapse. …
"She Could Worship Now Even In The Desert": The Monastic Life As An Escape To Higher Consciousness In The Works Of Henry James, Tabetha A. Madsen
"She Could Worship Now Even In The Desert": The Monastic Life As An Escape To Higher Consciousness In The Works Of Henry James, Tabetha A. Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
Stephen Koch has argued that Henry James is a writer that is deeply concerned with consciousness (93). Many critics acknowledge James's attention to the metaphysical. What fewer critics have observed is that the study of the metaphysical was not simply an intellectual process for James. Instead, James's study of consciousness often reads like the private experiences of the mystic. Much of the mysticism in James's work comes from his frequent use of monastic images and values. James's use of the monastic image--characterized by the qualities of obedience, silence, celibacy, and escape--explores the limitations and possibilities of consciousness in a more …
Cultivating A New Agricultural Ethos: An Environmentalist Reading Of John Steinbeck And Barbara Kingsolver, Will Fletcher
Cultivating A New Agricultural Ethos: An Environmentalist Reading Of John Steinbeck And Barbara Kingsolver, Will Fletcher
English Honors Theses
This thesis examines the agricultural criticisms of John Steinbeck in conversation with those of Barbara Kingsolver. It argues that Kingsolver answers Steinbeck’s agricultural criticisms in her own works with a vision of an improved food system that benefits farmers, consumers, and the environment. The first chapter looks at the 1939 classic The Grapes of Wrath, arguing that Steinbeck levels four main criticisms against industrial agriculture, all of which point towards a social movement aimed at protesting against the exploitation of the natural world. The second chapter opens with a dialogue between Steinbeck (informed by The Grapes of Wrath and Travels …
Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale And The Best, The Worst, And The Betwixt: The Intertwined Women Of Arthurian Literature And Victorian Society, Hannah Johansson
Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale And The Best, The Worst, And The Betwixt: The Intertwined Women Of Arthurian Literature And Victorian Society, Hannah Johansson
Theses and Dissertations
The late Victorian and early Edwardian artist Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale’s illustrations and paintings have been largely marginalized in the larger world of Arthurian art and criticism. This thesis argues that her work, focused on the illustration Enid, Guinevere, and Vivien, is impactful in its exploration between Arthurian characters and Victorian women. Critiquing with a feminist ideology, Brickdale attempts to break down Victorian stereotypes on women by visually breaking down the socially congruent labels placed onto the women of Camelot. In doing so, she both critiques Victorian society and artistically argues for a much needed social reconstruction.
Recovering The Lost Art Of Medicine: A Role For Ignatian Spirituality, Cecilia Motherway
Recovering The Lost Art Of Medicine: A Role For Ignatian Spirituality, Cecilia Motherway
College Honors Program
Throughout history, medicine or healing has been deeply associated with religion and spirituality, from the ancient Greek healing god Asclepius to the medieval monastic medical tradition and beyond. This lies in their common cause: addressing the vulnerability of our human existence. Humanity has long recognized that our suffering and death raise existential questions concerning our mortality that may require perspectives greater than biology and rationality can provide. However, at the turn of the 20th century, as medical technology rapidly advanced, raising the average global life expectancy by decades, the medical field removed all non-scientific, non-secular influences to position itself as …

The purpose of this thesis is to showcase the interesting, yet inevitable effect that the medium of podcasting had on the 2024 United States Presidential Election Cycle. Throughout the history of the U.S. voters have looked towards the ever growing frontier of technology to shorten the gap between them, and their candidate of choice. From Franklin D. Roosevelt and the radio, to Barack Obama and the internet, the impact these leaps in communication have had on presidential elections are undeniable. Between the two candidacies of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, it was Trump who made full use of the medium …
Aristotle And Mencius, Comparisons Of The Good Life, Cormac I. O'Brien
Aristotle And Mencius, Comparisons Of The Good Life, Cormac I. O'Brien
Undergraduate Theses
Aristotle and Mencius are both renown philosophers in the field of ethics and moral teaching. Using the Nicomachean Ethics and The Works of Mencius, we can analyze their respective theories to come to a better understanding of what the good life is in the eyes of these two great philosophers, as well as how an individual can work towards achieving a fulfilling life.
