The Role Of Livestock Cooperative Societies In Providing Information On Livestock Production In Northwest Nigeria, Suleiman Idris, Abdulkadir Tsagem Mamman Jun 2024

The Role Of Livestock Cooperative Societies In Providing Information On Livestock Production In Northwest Nigeria, Suleiman Idris, Abdulkadir Tsagem Mamman

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Livestock cooperative societies play an important role in disseminating information related to livestock production practices to farmers in Northwest Nigeria. These societies aim to support farmers by sharing knowledge that can help strengthen animal husbandry techniques, improve productivity, and increase farm incomes. Through organized events, training programs, and distribution of educational materials, the livestock cooperatives in the region seek to provide farmers with the latest research-based information on topics like animal breeding, feeding, disease prevention, and market access. The objective of this study is to assess the types of information services provided by livestock cooperative societies to address the information …

Leo Strauss On Machiavelli: Athens Vs. Jerusalem Or Ontological Assumptions About Human Nature And Power, Dickson Tiphaine, Jokić Aleksandar Jun 2024

Leo Strauss On Machiavelli: Athens Vs. Jerusalem Or Ontological Assumptions About Human Nature And Power, Dickson Tiphaine, Jokić Aleksandar

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article we focus on the true nature of a disparity asserted in Leo Strauss's discussion of Machiavelli to amount to a virtue battle of sorts between Athens and Jerusalem. To convey this conflict Strauss is drawing both on his once Talmudic scholarship and his expertise in the history of political philosophy. We explore the stunning distortions, both theological and philosophical, in Strauss's discussion that appears aimed to support a conservative position on leadership, which calls for the magnanimous few to exercise power over the many (the lowborn, the poor and the vulgar). Not only does Strauss distort the …

Visual Images As A Gateway To Scholarly Inquiry In Information Literacy Instruction, Carolyn White Gamtso, Susanne F. Paterson Jun 2024

Visual Images As A Gateway To Scholarly Inquiry In Information Literacy Instruction, Carolyn White Gamtso, Susanne F. Paterson

Faculty Publications

In this interactive session, participants will engage in activities that use student-generated questions about visual images as entry points to research literary criticism of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. The presenters collaborated on a student-centered, inquiry-based information literacy lesson (IL) focused on visual literacy, critical thinking, and research question design in an introductory literary analysis course. The co-instructors decentralized the classroom by empowering students to ask probing questions about illustrations from an early 20th-Century edition of Hamlet. Workshop participants will experience the presenters’ lesson firsthand by using the Right Question Institute’s Question Formulation Technique (QFT) as a springboard to research question development, …

Ford Madox Ford’S Unusual War: Ongoing Worry And Modernity, Nur Karatas Jun 2024

Ford Madox Ford’S Unusual War: Ongoing Worry And Modernity, Nur Karatas

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In Parade’s End, Ford Madox Ford approaches the experience of trauma in an unusual way—it is no longer just past experiences, but the expectancy of dismal events that become as traumatic. Ford chooses worry for such rendering. In order to make the correlation between suffering and sensibility, he places worry in the lives of his characters, which reflects on Ford’s own life. This discussion will introduce the idea that worry is going to be a major component of Ford’s psychologising of war. I explore this worry-driven sensibility and the ways it is reflected, especially in the characters’ obsession with the …

Let Us Feast! The Long Tradition Of The Feast And How It Has Featured Through Time In Literature And Film, Anke Klitzing Jun 2024

Let Us Feast! The Long Tradition Of The Feast And How It Has Featured Through Time In Literature And Film, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Why do we celebrate so often with good food? Festive meals are as ancient as they are contemporary, and have featured in books, films and stories since we began to tell them, from Beowulf to Big Night (1996). Feasts strengthen interpersonal and communal bonds, but also offer the chance to showcase wealth and generosity; however, being a host can be a challenge as well.

Style Guide For Afit Dissertations, Theses, And Graduate Research Papers, Graduate School Of Engineering And Management, Air Force Institute Of Technology

AFIT Documents

A primary component of graduate education at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is the scholarly presentation of research results. In most programs graduates must submit a dissertation, thesis, or graduate research paper as the final step in fulfilling degree requirements. These documents make a statement about the student and the quality of the student’s research, the student’s department, and AFIT’s academic standards. Therefore, the purpose of this guide is to help students present their research results in a form that is acceptable to AFIT.

The student’s research committee will guide the intellectual content of a student’s research manuscript …

Japan’S Assimilation Of Okinawa, Alex Thompson Jun 2024

Japan’S Assimilation Of Okinawa, Alex Thompson

ASPIRE 2024

. My research shows that the initial motivation for assimilating the Okinawan people was to create a national cohesive culture in Japan. Still, it fell short because of the actions of the average citizen in Japan and the governmental strategies. The idea of racial superiority and discrimination kept the Okinawans from ever being recognized as Japanese citizens. In this paper, I will discuss the Japanese government's assimilation practices and how Japanese people contributed to the assimilation policies. After exploring Okinawan culture and how this unique culture was formed, I will examine how the average Japanese citizen's racial superiority complex, humiliation …

Burning “Between Two Fires”: The Individual Under Erasure In Hassan Blasim’S “The Nightmares Of Carlos Fuentes”, Gautam Basu Thakur Jun 2024

Burning “Between Two Fires”: The Individual Under Erasure In Hassan Blasim’S “The Nightmares Of Carlos Fuentes”, Gautam Basu Thakur

Humanities and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay uses Freudian–Lacanian psychoanalytic theory to interpret Hassan Blasim’s short story “The Nightmares of Carlos Fuentes”. Blasim’s story depicts the psychological struggles of an Iraqi emigrant relating to his embattled sense of belonging in a Dutch society due to the recurrent nightmares of his “traumatic” past. It challenges his assimilationist fantasies. I develop Lacan’s idea of ontological lack as a structural susceptibility that is exacerbated by actual experiences of trauma to underline how racialized refugees from the war-torn global South are doubly vulnerable to experiencing subjective dehiscence between their efforts to forget past war traumas and the challenges of …

Avoiding Pragmatic Oddity: A Bottom-Up Defeasible Deontic Logic, Guido Governatori, Silvano Colombo Tosatto, Antonio Rotolo Jun 2024

Avoiding Pragmatic Oddity: A Bottom-Up Defeasible Deontic Logic, Guido Governatori, Silvano Colombo Tosatto, Antonio Rotolo

Centre for Computational Law (2022-2025)

This paper presents an extension of Defeasible Deontic Logic to deal with the Pragmatic Oddity problem. The logic applies three general principles: (i) the Pragmatic Oddity problem must be solved within a general logical treatment of contrary-to-duty (CTD) reasoning; (ii) non-monotonic methods must be adopted to handle CTD reasoning; (iii) logical models of CTD reasoning must be computationally feasible and, if possible, efficient. The proposed extension of Defeasible Deontic Logic elaborates a preliminary version of the model proposed by Governatori and Rotolo [15]. The previous solution was based on particular characteristics of the (constructive, top-down) proof theory of the logic. …

Community Pantry As A Form Of Bayanihan In The Light Of Albert Camus’ Concept Of Rebellion, Carl Jayson D. Hernandez, Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, Charles Aldrin A. Delgado Jun 2024

Community Pantry As A Form Of Bayanihan In The Light Of Albert Camus’ Concept Of Rebellion, Carl Jayson D. Hernandez, Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, Charles Aldrin A. Delgado

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

Filipinos are known for their traditional value called bayanihan. Bayanihan is a deeply embedded Filipino cultural idea symbolizing social solidarity and collaboration. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipinos created community pantries as a support system. This paper aims to analyze the idea of community pantry as a form of bayanihan through the Camusian perspective. The paper has three main parts. First, we will discuss the community pantry as a new form of bayanihan. This traditional value has been culturally passed to Filipinos and continues to live on as an identifier of the nation’s resiliency. Second, we will discuss Albert Camus’ concept …

Class And Class Consciousness According To E. P. Thompson, Daniel Cunningham Jun 2024

Class And Class Consciousness According To E. P. Thompson, Daniel Cunningham

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this article, I extract a theory of class from E. P. Thompson’s historical works of the 1960s and 1970s, focusing especially on his 1963 magnum opus The Making of the English Working Class, the articles later collected in the 1991 volume Customs in Common: Studies in Traditional Popular Culture, and the essays “The Peculiarities of the English” and “Eighteenth-Century English Society: Class Struggle without Class?” In the first section, I argue, following Ellen Meiksins Wood, that Thompson developed a genuinely historical materialist theory of class formation as a “structured process” that moves from class struggle to class …

Poetry Style Experimentation, Ian Mcguckin Jun 2024

Poetry Style Experimentation, Ian Mcguckin

Honors Projects

This project is an experimentation in different craft and stylistic approaches to poetry. Each week, a different major contemporary poet was studied through one of their collections. Their work was analyzed and dissected to reveal some of the main stylistic choices they make to achieve their individual effect. After analysis, a handful of these elements were chosen to replicate in the author's own poems. Guided by crafted prompts created to inspire the author towards the chosen poet's style or subject, two to three poems were drafted each week and then revised at the end of the week. In total, this …
