Librarian Publications & Presentations
These prompt cards were inspired by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and American Indigenous Library Association (AILA) presentation on “Talk Story: Centering Oral Traditions to Advance Literacy Justice and Transform Community Relationships” at the ALA Annual Conference 2023. One representative from APALA and one from AILA shared an oral storytelling experience. Afterward, a panel discussion was held discussing “Talk Story as a community of practice to recenter youth literacy programs as intergenerational literacy opportunities with an emphasis on oral histories and traditions, intersectional community building, and cultural sensitivities.”1 The APALA Family Literacy Focus Committee decided it would be …
Gamified Bodies And The Illusory Meaning Of Muscle, Orlando Woods
Gamified Bodies And The Illusory Meaning Of Muscle, Orlando Woods
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper foregrounds the agency of the body to explore how it is “gamified” in the pursuit of a desired self-image. Gamified bodies are those that are tricked into metabolising in ways that suit the representational aspirations of the self. The aspirations that I consider in this paper are those of muscle, and how individuals trying to build muscle pursue various metabolic tricks to try and overcome, or otherwise suppress, the in-built agency of the body. Exploring and understanding these tricks contributes to feminist understandings of the body generally, and of muscle specifically, and its unruly nonconformity to the gendered …
Of Light And Shadows: Buddhism, Cinema, And The Question Of Diffused Religion In Modern China, Teng-Kuan Ng
Of Light And Shadows: Buddhism, Cinema, And The Question Of Diffused Religion In Modern China, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
While the scholarship on premodern Chinese Buddhism has explored the tradition’s rich diffusion throughout various realms of sociocultural life, the study of modern Chinese Buddhism leans heavily towards its monastic, institutional, and overtly “religious” forms. This split mirrors the logic of modern secularization, whereby religion should be rationally differentiated from the broader social fabric, institutionalized, and delimited within its own discrete functional sphere. This article rethinks the putative rupture between Chinese Buddhism’s past and present incarnations. Through the prism of cinema, a technology that arrived on Chinese shores at the same moment as the Western concept of religion, I illuminate …
Intersections Of Trauma And Grief: Navigating Multilayered Terrain In Music Therapy To Support Youth Through Bereavement, Katherine Myers-Coffman Phd, Mt-Bc
Intersections Of Trauma And Grief: Navigating Multilayered Terrain In Music Therapy To Support Youth Through Bereavement, Katherine Myers-Coffman Phd, Mt-Bc
Music Therapy: Faculty Publications
Experiencing the death of a loved one as a young person is challenging in its own right, and underlying trauma can complicate one’s bereavement. With little available research exploring the intersections of trauma and grief, this paper aims to provide a foundational understanding of how trauma contexts and histories manifest in music therapy bereavement support programming for young people. Theoretical models that are culturally grounded, resource-oriented, and adopting an ecological, multisystemic lens are presented. The impacts of interpersonal trauma, trauma from systemic oppression, collective trauma, and intergenerational trauma are explored within the context of bereavement support. Diverse music therapy approaches …

Роль Микро- И Макроструктуры Словаря Терминов В Решении Задач Синтеза Русского Глагола, Irina V. Ivliyeva
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Courts And Intercollegiate Athletics, Richard C. Crepeau
The Courts And Intercollegiate Athletics, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Over the past several weeks, the world of college sports has witnessed considerable turmoil and the prospect of major change. The future of the NCAA is in doubt, at least in its current form. The myth of the “student athlete” under the banner of amateurism is dead. The term should be laid to rest and never be seen in print again. It was a fabricated term created by former NCAA president, Walter Byers, designed to allow the NCAA to keep the money earned from intercollegiate athletics for itself, and out of the hands of the athletes.

I our 21st C. world there are multiple cellphone companies and multiple plans to which one can subscribe, in order to facilitate communicate; however, God's communication plan is singular, always available, and unlimited. God is always ready to communicate with human beings; it is our responsibility to choose to access Heaven's cellphone service. God is open to any and all communication, but we must understand that He will not always answer our petitions, according to our desires; because He knows the end from the beginning. He answers our prayers with either yes, no, later, we must have faith that He …

The Closing Of The Rock 'N' Roll Camp For Girls In Portland, Sarah Dougher
University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
The 2023 closing of the Rock “n” Roll Camp for Girls (founded in Portland, Oregon in 2001) was due to many factors, some of which were present in its founding. Using interviews, scholarly literature, and archival materials from the camp, this paper explores elements contributing to its end, including changing categories of gender, dynamic ideas about what constitutes women’s and girls’ empowerment, an altered music industry landscape, changes in technology, and rampant gentrification.

It has been a very busy last six weeks or more for me and in the world of sport. There have been any number of things that have attracted my attention and normally would have prompted some comment here. At some point, I will return to some of those issues and events. Today, I will concentrate on one.

The presentation explores the use of artificial intelligence singing software in the compositional exploration of spiritual concepts. Synthesiser V is used as a "virtual singer" throughout the composition. This technology represents a shift in resources akin to the availability of sampled orchestral instruments, with the added factors of presenting the "composer's voice". This is significant as the author is autistic and has alexithymia, so the questions around the link between the compiser's emotion and the expression of a synthetic voice are relevant.

Discerning The Missional Implications Of Context: A Demographic Study Of Great Falls For The Great Falls Church Of Christ, Matthew C. Burleson
DMin Project Theses
The purpose of this Lipscomb University June 2024 Doctor of Minstry project thesis was to discern the missional implications of GFCC’s (Great Falls Church of Christ) context. Three components comprised the larger purpose. First, the purpose was to survey the mission of God in Scripture with a team made up of members from GFCC. This survey would facilitate the missional aspect of discerning the missional implications. Second, the purpose was to acquaint this team with practices and principles of spiritual discernment. Acquainting the team with these practices would facilitate the discerning aspect of discerning the missional implications. Third, the purpose …

Genealogical Ethics In The United States And The Popularization Of Genealogical Research In The Digital Age, Thomas Daniel Knight
Genealogical Ethics In The United States And The Popularization Of Genealogical Research In The Digital Age, Thomas Daniel Knight
History Faculty Publications
This article examines genealogical ethics in the digital age. At a time when more resources for research are available digitally than ever previously, digital media also pose challenges for the large-scale dissemination of false or misleading information as well as the incautious presentation of more careful research that then might be misconstrued by some. This article first reviews the literature about the development of academic genealogy and professional ethical standards. It then provides a series of case studies, each of which examines particular situations in which ethical questions have arisen about the presentation of research findings. This article argues for …

Preface
A lot has happened in the world, and in e-literature, since my essay débuted as a conference presentation then a publication in electronic book review in 2018. Global protests against the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor during the pandemic summer of 2020 sparked reckoning with how banal, mainstream, and lethal is white supremacy. Six months later, in response to specific critiques about access and equity inside the Electronic Literature Organization, its Board of Directors published a statement about Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) as a core value. As an editor of the Electronic Literature Collective Volume 4, …

As human beings on this tiny planet in the cosmos we call Earth, we live as ‘citizens’ in a variety of people-determined land demarcations that we call countries, each with its own unique version of politics. Citizens in the United States and people in the world, therefore, are engaged in a variety of political dramas. It is fair to say that in the United States and globally, the current political climate is very divisive. In the United States and globally, humanity is at an inflection point in the evolution of its consciousness at individual and collective levels. Out of fear, …

Excerpt:
"The Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University is celebrating this year as a ‘Year of Human Origins’ because 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of ‘Lucy’. The discussions on human origins and Lucy provokes one to seriously think about human life and where we come from.... The momentousness of the discovery of Lucy, a cardinal juncture that pegged firmly our existence in the scientific idea of evolution, cannot and must not be undermined."

Empathy In The Classroom: How Great Books Create Meaningful Discussion, Courtney Whitaker
Masters Theses
Every day it seems there is another news story detailing our problem of division and polarization, especially where race is concerned. In this thesis, I will explore the ways in which teachers can facilitate empathy within their students, especially through utilizing literary works that address prejudice and division. I intend to approach this topic through the lens of a biblical worldview and draw from current scholarship in making a case for literature as a lesson in empathy. I will conclude with addressing a variety of well-known literary works and the practical ways in which teachers can utilize them in the …

The Keeper: A Ring’s Promiser follows three parallel plots; two reside in the present, the other in the past. The knowledge revealed in one increases the precariousness of the other. While in the very beginning, these three perspectives were intended to volley within one book, the course has evolved. Due to this becoming a series, the plots will intertwine slower than intended. The introduction of the others will be woven later than intended. In this first novel, the reader will follow the dynamic journey of a young Amara Knightfall. The soon-to-be queen, Elaraina Wastereon, will be tied into the plot …
