The Relationship Between Evangelism And Social Action, Isaac Rex Oct 2024

The Relationship Between Evangelism And Social Action, Isaac Rex

Mission Theology & Strategy Papers

Evangelicals take multiple perspectives on the relationship between social action and evangelism. However, all evangelicals tend to agree that both evangelism and social action are deeply important. This paper examines the relationship between evangelism and social action while both affirming the priority of evangelism and the necessity of social action.

The Columns From “The Tomb Of Charlemagne” Between Aachen And The Louvre: A Modern Spoliation Saga, Brigitte Buettner Oct 2024

The Columns From “The Tomb Of Charlemagne” Between Aachen And The Louvre: A Modern Spoliation Saga, Brigitte Buettner

Art: Faculty Publications

In September 1794, the French army, after conquering much of Belgium and the Netherlands, marched into Aachen. This early campaign of military conquest turned into the first laboratory for the systematic plunder of cultural assets enacted by various post-revolutionary and Napoleonic regimes from 1794 to 1815. Works of art “liberated” from the tyranny of aristocratic and religious ownership were earmarked for the newly opened Musée Central des Arts (now the Louvre) to showcase the enlightened cultural supremacy of Paris. From Aachen, the conquerors took more than the usual loot of movable assets: they “extracted” some forty columns from Charlemagne’s famed …

Optimizing Mlb Roster Selection With Moneyball Ai Scouting Agents: Using High Fidelity Synthetic Data To Optimize Team Performance, Parker Gibbons, Jon Chun

IPHS 391: Interdisciplinary AI Frontiers

This project utilizes artificial intelligence Agents to generate high-fidelity synthetic data for Major League Baseball hitters and their statistics over a single 162 game season. The AI evaluates each player based on a five-tool scale, comparing their abilities to one another. Finally, optimization techniques are applied to select an optimal set of thirteen hitters (half of a full MLB roster of twenty-six players), maximizing overall performance while adhering to a specified salary cap. The operating hypothesis is that artificial intelligence can effectively generate high-fidelity synthetic data for baseball hitters and evaluate player performance based on a five-tool scale, given a …

Pitchai: Streamlining Investment Banking Pitches Using Llms, Dillon Cleary

IPHS 391: Interdisciplinary AI Frontiers

Investment banking professionals spend significant time and effort creating client-facing pitch materials, synthesizing large volumes of financial data, and crafting compelling narratives. This project proposes a novel pipeline that leverages large language models (LLMs) and synthetic data generation to streamline and automate the creation of investment banking pitch documents. By drawing on publicly available filings and investor materials of comparable companies, the system generates high-quality, anonymized financial datasets and seamlessly transforms them into investor-ready deliverables—such as valuation ranges and pitch deck materials The result is a more efficient, consistent, and secure approach to preparing client presentations, freeing bankers to focus …

Surrealist Photography: Past, Present, And Future, Carmen Kennedy

Honors Projects

Surrealist Photography: Past, Present, and Future is a research project diving into surrealist photographers, contemporary photographers, and AI. The surrealist photographers I researched are Man Ray, Angus McBean, and Claude Cahun. Then, I analyze the works of Erik Johansson, Pat Brassington, and Aida Muluneh and how their work is inspired by or has the vibe of surrealist photographs from the movement. Lastly, I start to explore the …

The Embrace Of Religion And Spirituality In Indonesia, Olivia Cotton Oct 2024

The Embrace Of Religion And Spirituality In Indonesia, Olivia Cotton

Indonesia: Arts, Religion, and Social Change

This thesis offers a contemporary investigation of the extent to which historical contexts contribute to Indonesian people’s reservations towards political conversations and social movements, such as protests and demonstrations. The historical contexts in question are focused on the Soeharto dictatorship from 1966-1999 and its long reign of censorship, citizen violence, and general human rights violations. The research employs a mixed-methods approach focused on cultural and participant observation, social media analysis, and interviews. Social media analyses offer insights into activism, particularly that of students and the youth, that are not generally available in scholarly sources. Interviews with Indonesian citizens and local …

SPARK Symposium Presentations

1813 was a big year for Chatsworth, although no one living there knew it. In theory, it was a year like any other. William George Spencer Cavendish, the 6th Duke of Devonshire, had inherited the estate from his father two years prior, and just a year ago had made an impressive purchase of the entirety of the Bishop of Ely’s library–his book-adoring mother, of course, would be proud. William had no marital prospects, nor would he ever. In thirteen years, he would begin work with famous architect Joseph Paxton. Unbeknownst to twenty-three-year-old William, this partnership would result in some of …

Transformer-Based Joint Learning Approach For Text Normalization In Vietnamese Automatic Speech Recognition Systems, The Viet Bui, Tho Chi Luong, Oanh Thi Tran

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this article, we investigate the task of normalizing transcribed texts in Vietnamese Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems in order to improve user readability and the performance of downstream tasks. This task usually consists of two main sub-tasks: predicting and inserting punctuation (i.e., period, comma); and detecting and standardizing named entities (i.e., numbers, person names) from spoken forms to their appropriate written forms. To achieve these goals, we introduce a complete corpus including of 87,700 sentences and investigate conditional joint learning approaches which globally optimize two sub-tasks simultaneously. The experimental results are quite promising. Overall, the proposed architecture outperformed the …

Ethel Bird: A College Woman's Life And Legacy From 1901 To 1905, Bryn A. Morris

Student Publications

This essay is a case study of the experiences of Ethel Bird, a middle-class student at Beloit College at the turn of the twentieth century. Through an analysis of the first-person accounts of her college life, as reported in hundreds of letters sent to her parents, the essay will expand upon previous explorations of gender and postsecondary education to examine specifically the middle-class experience, as well as how this experience led to the entry of women into the workforce. Furthermore, it will examine how Bird’s college experiences fit into the broader history of women’s education in the United States, especially …

‘More Love Letters, Please!’: Portuguese Love And The Literary Legacy Of Sincere Feeling, Manuela MourãO Oct 2024

‘More Love Letters, Please!’: Portuguese Love And The Literary Legacy Of Sincere Feeling, Manuela MourãO

English Faculty Publications

This essay traces the formation of the myth of Portuguese Love, and demonstrates both its transcultural reach and its importance for literary history. Sparked by the tragic love of Pedro and Inês de Castro, the notion of Portuguese Love was crystallized in seventeenth-century France by Lettres portugaises, influenced European letters for centuries, and became an enduring myth in Portuguese culture. Anchored by Roland Barthes’s critique of the contemporary disparagement of sentimental love, the essay argues that Portuguese Love’s continued affirmation, from nineteenth-century literary iterations to current manifestations, demonstrates the power of a discourse of genuine feeling to counter ideological …

Good Kid M.A.A.D City A Study Analyzing The Root Motivation For Why Jordanians Join Jihadi Salafist Groups, Vincent Tocci

Jordan: Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East

This study examines the motives of Jordanians who join Jihadi Salafist groups. Particularly, the researcher focuses on social and economic factors that could motivate Jordanians to join these groups. Drawing from interviews with experts, a review of the 2018 Sociology of Extremism and Terrorism in Jordan study, and historical analysis, the researcher identifies three primary motivators: government failure, identity crises, and economic challenges. Key findings highlight that the failure of Arab states to provide adequate governance and public services to their people caused mistrust and a feeling of discrimination among the Arab people. Identity issues, a deep sense of isolation, …

Written History And Lived Legacy Of Cape Town Jazz, Grace E. Runner Oct 2024

Written History And Lived Legacy Of Cape Town Jazz, Grace E. Runner

South Africa: Multiculturalism and Human Rights

This paper examines the historical and current implications of Cape Town Jazz in juxtaposition with the genre's written history and lived experiences of four key members of the jazz community. Drawing from the interviews with a musician, promoter, educator, and enthusiast, this study explores the influence of Cape Jazz as a subgenre rooted in the Coloured community's cultural heritage and the apartheid struggle. While Cape Jazz remains practiced through its legacy, the current jazz scene in Cape Town reflects a broader global influence that is evolving through younger musicians' interpretations of local and global musics. Key areas of issue as …

In God’S Time: Pastoral Care And Migrant Faith In Mexico And The Borderlands Of The United States Of America, Katherine Rocky Marshall

Mexico: Migration, Borders, and Transnational Communities

Katherine Marshall, a student of Religious Studies, responds to the following question by recounting a series of interviews with professors and pastoral care practitioners from Mexico and the United States of America: “With a focus on the Catholic Church, what is the importance of pastoral care for people migrating through Mexico to the United States of America?” Pastoral care is a part of many religious traditions, but, in a Christian context, it is a practice that involves becoming a physical reminder of God’s constant presence. Pastoral care practitioners make deep listening the core of their work, responding to various needs …

Madhesi Dalit Women’S Experience With ‘Development’ And Its Limitations In Nepal, Chloe Peyton

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

In the study of development, the thoughts, viewpoints, and overall experience of beneficiaries contribute a humanitarian viewpoint to an often abstracted and speculative realm of study. This research focuses on Dalit women in the Madhesh province of Nepal and their experiences with development, thereby providing context to beneficiaries' and non-beneficiaries expectations and desires regarding development, as well as the unresolved challenges faced by Dalit women despite development efforts. Madhesi Dalit women are the focus of this research as their intersectional identities place them in a uniquely challenging position to attain equal treatment and opportunity, and these women, in particular, are …

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko Oct 2024

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. Observations of EMI classes and non-academic spaces on school grounds, in addition to interviews and focus groups with students and …

The Joining Of Wisdom And Compassion: Tibetan Buddhist Nuns' Intellectual Agency And Sectarian Identity At Dolma Ling Nunnery, Isabella Infante Oct 2024

The Joining Of Wisdom And Compassion: Tibetan Buddhist Nuns' Intellectual Agency And Sectarian Identity At Dolma Ling Nunnery, Isabella Infante

Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples

Historically, Tibetan nuns have had limited access to debate-based philosophical study or any formal monastic education, primarily being trained in ritual practices. While debate has been practiced by other sects, it is largely understood as a major component of the Gelukpa study program. This essay attempts to explore the introduction of debate at Dolma Ling, a non-sectarian nunnery, and how the practice of non-sectarianism is reflected in the curriculum, especially in a context where women have historically been excluded from the design of their own curriculum. While Dolma Ling's non-sectarian approach offers a platform for intra-sectarian dialogue, the Gelugpa-centric curriculum …

Ontological Commitment In Nāgārjuna’S Madhyamaka On Inherent Existence And The Emptiness Of Emptiness, Alexander Shin

Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples

This paper explores Nāgārjuna’s Madhyamaka philosophy, particularly focusing on the ontological consequences of his doctrine of emptiness and rejection of inherent existence. In it, I will examine Nāgārjuna’s nuanced anti-realist ontology that both denies the ultimate existence of all entities while preserving their conventional reality. Through an analysis of several aspects of Nāgārjuna’s Madhyamaka and their logical consequences, this study aims to demonstrate the internal coherence of Nāgārjuna’s thought. I additionally address potential objections to Nāgārjuna, attempting to defend Nāgārjuna’s philosophy as both consistent and rigorous, with enduring relevance to both Buddhist thought and contemporary philosophical discourse. This project was …

“Christ For The World We Sing”: What Twentieth-Century Churches Of Christ Sang About Missions, Monty L. Lynn, Derran Reese, Kelly Cross Elliott, D. J. Bulls

Management Sciences

What twentieth-century members of acapella Churches of Christ sang to one another about missions informed, reinforced, and reflected congregational perspectives and practices. Fifty-four missions hymns from hymnals used within Churches of Christ suggest thirty-nine themes that encourage urgent and empathetic responses to spiritual distress, near and far. Hymns resonate with the trajectories of missions among Churches of Christ and provide insight into the ethos of congregations.
