Reforming Community Structures: The Public Library's Impact On The Midwestern Author, Mary Sabo
Reforming Community Structures: The Public Library's Impact On The Midwestern Author, Mary Sabo
English: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Public libraries, though increasingly overlooked, are pivotal spaces for Midwestern communities. Public libraries are fundamental institutions for those in their community and have consistently remained this way, due to the safety they provide as constant outlets for public life. Established in the late 1800s, the emerging public library system developed itself with the foundational goal of reforming society and addressing issues of “public vice” such as “drinking, gambling, and prostitution” (Goldstein 214). The following research discusses public libraries and librarians' continuous support for the moral health of society and how the public library has influenced Midwestern literary careers, specifically that …

The Hidden Atrocity Of The Kafala System: Addressing The Domestic And Sexual Abuse Against Female Migrant Workers In Qatar, Sarah Lee
Global Studies Senior Capstone
The Kafala System is a labor sponsorship program in the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jordan, and Lebanon, originally created to be beneficial for migrant workers by providing a legal framework that provides advantages for both foreign workers and their local sponsors. However, this program has turned into an avenue for human trafficking, with different forms of exploitations increasing through it. This paper focuses on this system in the context of Qatar, discussing the history, nature of the Kafala System, as well as it’s impact on female migrant workers. Female migrant workers face a different set of struggles compared to their male …

Gender In Tanzania: People’S Perceptions On Changing Female Gender Roles In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Samantha Rice
Gender In Tanzania: People’S Perceptions On Changing Female Gender Roles In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Samantha Rice
Tanzania: Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology
Traditional gender roles have existed in Tanzania for centuries and are only now beginning to change as the country becomes increasingly globalized and more immersed in the global scene. Many studies in Tanzania focus on the lived experiences of women and women’s equality from an outsider’s perspective. Few focus on the general population’s perception of the state of gender roles and how they are changing. The city of Dar Es Salaam is uniquely exposed to external influences, being a large commercial city growing more rapidly than most cities in Africa. By using a questionnaire and the general population of Dar …
Seeds Of Dependency: How Neocolonialism Acts As A Barrier To Sustainable Agriculture In Cameroon’S Centre Region, Joseph Caltagirone
Seeds Of Dependency: How Neocolonialism Acts As A Barrier To Sustainable Agriculture In Cameroon’S Centre Region, Joseph Caltagirone
Cameroon: Development and Social Change
This paper aims to answer how neocolonialism has acted as a barrier to sustainable agriculture in the Centre region of Cameroon. This research draws on primary data from interviews with government officials, NGO employees, and farmers, as well as observations conducted in the village of Sa’a, and a review of literature on Cameroon’s colonial history and agricultural practices. It reveals that the barriers to sustainable agriculture are rooted in entrenched economic incentives driven by foreign investors and multinationals, with the complicity of the Cameroonian government, domestic NGOs, and producers. Findings uncovered that these financial incentives in turn encourage export driven …

From Conflict To Classroom: The Impact Of The Anglophone Crisis On Displaced Students' Education In Yaoundé, Sitota Therese Blomquist
Cameroon: Development and Social Change
The Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon has caused significant disruption to the education of students from the Northwest and Southwest regions, leading to displacement and resettlement in Francophone areas such as Yaoundé. This study explores the educational experiences of displaced Anglophone students aged 18+ in secondary education in Yaoundé, focusing on the challenges they face in adapting to a Francophone education system, their coping mechanisms, and the support they receive from schools, local organizations, and the government. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research conducts in-depth interviews with displaced students and key stakeholders, revealing that language barriers, cultural differences, and financial constraints …
The Ideological State Apparatus Of Cameroon: Molding Consciousness, Ethan Levine
The Ideological State Apparatus Of Cameroon: Molding Consciousness, Ethan Levine
Cameroon: Development and Social Change
The ideological state apparatus is a concept introduced by French Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser that refers to the body of institutions–educational, cultural, religious, and communications–that shape the popular class’ values, beliefs, and political ideas to legitimize and reproduce the conditions of production. This framework is essential for my research because it offers a material basis–the economic foundations–of the institutions that mold consciousness. Simply put, the education and media in Cameroon, as in every state, are guided by the underlying logics of their mode of production. Using this framework, my research explores the political consciousness of the working class in Yaoundé …

Ai-Powered Appointment Prioritization System For Resource-Poor Settings, Ayman Wadud
IPHS 391: Interdisciplinary AI Frontiers
This project presents an AI-driven multi-agent system for managing and prioritizing patient appointments in a physician's chamber in a resource-poor setting. By employing a multi-agent architecture and a vector database, the system dynamically adapts to real-time events like patient check-ins, and supports the manual reordering of appointments. Built using Python, LangChain, and the ChromaDB vector database, the system can be accessed via a simple UI on Streamlit. The objective is to enhance patient flow, reduce wait times, and provide an adaptive and efficient appointment system in a Bangladeshi clinical setting.

Khet खेत: Board Game Development As A Knowledge Producing Mechanism For Agroecological Development In Nepal, Margaret Mclaughlin
Khet खेत: Board Game Development As A Knowledge Producing Mechanism For Agroecological Development In Nepal, Margaret Mclaughlin
Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya
Sustainable agriculture is a frequently weaponized phrase with a varying degree of intentions and applications world-wide. For Nepal, true sustainability lies within cultivating traditional indigenous agricultural practices in favor of imported western methods which are ill suited for the unique geography of Nepal and the longevity of the people and place they call home. Agroecology, or the focus on the importance of biodiversity conservation and attention to the greater natural balance lies at the heart of agricultural development and community building efforts which sustain Nepali agriculture at its core. By using board game play as a facilitator of cooperative knowledge …

Faith In The Floodplain Environmental And Religious Change In The Bön Village Of Lubra, Mustang, Lily R. Smith
Faith In The Floodplain Environmental And Religious Change In The Bön Village Of Lubra, Mustang, Lily R. Smith
Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples
In the Nepali Himalayas, the village of Lubra, Mustang is contending with how to adapt to intensifying flash floods. Lubra is a religiously and culturally unique village, as it is the only village in Mustang entirely practicing the Tibetan indigenous religion of Bön and contains multiple well-preserved old Bön monasteries. The people of Lubra have a strong historical and spiritual connection to their village and this connection is increasingly being strained by the effects of climate change, development of infrastructure, and outmigration. Residents are looking for ways to adapt to change, and wondering how they will keep their culture and …

The Spiritual Well‑Being Scale In The Polish Catholic Setting: Construct, Structure, And Relationships With Psychological Well‑Being, Beata Zarzycka, Kamil Tomaka, Michał Grupa, Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The population of Poland could be of particular interest to researchers studying religion and spirituality. Catholicism has played a significant role in shaping the country’s culture, history, and tradition and is considered a national religion. More recently, however, the processes of moving away from regular participation in religious services and loosening ties with the institution of the Catholic Church are marked (Polish Public Opinion Research Center, CBOS). The Polish Catholic setting may modify the associations between psychological variables that have been studied in their relationships with spirituality, which have been investigated in religious contexts differing from a Polish Catholic one. …

Female Representation In Jazz, Melonee Gray
Female Representation In Jazz, Melonee Gray
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, the list of jazz greats goes on and on. These are the people who developed the culture, style, and rules of jazz we know and love today. The question lingers, where are the women? In most other genres, styles, and even in pop culture, most people can list one or two women who had an impact on the development. However, in jazz, there are seemingly no women who made a lasting impact on the genre. Women were incredibly prevalent in the development of jazz, but they are not remembered by history. Although …

The Tide Taken At The Flood: The Black Suffrage Movement During The Dorr Rebellion In The State Of Rhode Island (1841-1842), Caleb T. Horton
Dorr Scholarship
This essay by Caleb Troy Horton provides a brief history of the Providence, Rhode Island, African American Community and their involvement in the Dorr Rebellion.
The essay recounts the actions of the Rhode Island Anti-Slavery Society, its members, and Rhode Island Black leaders—headquartered in Providence—during the conflict that ultimately, through their agency, granted Black men suffrage in the 1842 Rhode Island State Constitution (a.k.a. the Law and Order Constitution) enacted in May 1843.
Songs For Dead Sailors, Toby Wren
Songs For Dead Sailors, Toby Wren
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
Songs for Dead Sailors is a psychological exploration of love and loss in the era of tall ships; a song cycle about leaving a home and loved ones, to journey with no promise of a return. The work was scored for a sextet of improvising musicians and reflects my interest in the creative process and my experiences teaching creative practice research. I consider my personal musical language to be a kind of novel amalgam of my influences, and so from the start I conducted a kind of archeology of influences, documenting my own musical choices in relation to the works …
