Writing In Philosophy: Pedagogy And Practice, Sarah K. Donovan, Renée Smith Dec 2024

Writing In Philosophy: Pedagogy And Practice, Sarah K. Donovan, Renée Smith

Philosophy and Religious Studies

Even a cursory internet search of syllabi for philosophy courses shows that the tradition of assigning papers—five-page papers, ten-page papers, fifteen-page papers—is still thriving. Yet the schedule of topics, often listed on those same syllabi, very seldom reveals any course time devoted to teaching students how to write. Perhaps the assignments themselves reveal the process of writing papers, rubrics reveal the expectations, and feedback nudges students to improve their writing. But that kind of information is not transparent in many syllabi. Even if we suppose that philosophy faculty support the idea of Writing Across the Curriculum, in practice faculty across …

Ethics And Environmental Impact Of Video Games, Anushka Chokshi

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

As video games grow in popularity, concerns regarding their ethical and environmental implications are brought up. While once, topics like their impact on child development or harm to Earth might have been considered minor or irrelevant, these concerns are now voiced in numerous articles across the internet, amplifying the urgency to develop games in an ethical context before matters are blown out of proportion. For the purposes of exploring both past and present views, this work draws from older and newer sources surrounding many topics on the idea of game development in the video game industry. Essentially, video game development …

Perceived Patient-Centered Care In Marching Band Artists, A L. Merrill, Z K. Winkelmann, N A. Uriegas

Bakerman Student Research Awards

Objective: Approximately 27,000 college marching band (MB) artists in the United States could benefit from access to healthcare services and patient-centered clinicians. The purpose of this study was to explore HCPs MB artists have access to and their perceptions of patient-centered care (PCC). Methods: We used a cross-sectional web-based survey of MB artists (n=751, age=20±8 years). MB directors from 242 colleges were emailed a survey link to forward to MB artists. Participants indicated which HCPs they could access. Those who reported no access or unsure were prompted to describe what they would do if an injury or illness occurred. Participants …

Everyone Brings Something To The Table: A Culturally Sustaining Analysis Of Teacher Candidates’ Mixed Reality Teaching Simulations, Erin Scott Dec 2024

Everyone Brings Something To The Table: A Culturally Sustaining Analysis Of Teacher Candidates’ Mixed Reality Teaching Simulations, Erin Scott

Faculty Publications

Discussions of HBCU students’ content knowledge have centered around developing high impact, asset-based approaches to learning (Williams et al, 2022). So, HBCU teacher preparation providers (TPPs) can also focus efforts on culturally sustaining approaches to developing candidates’ content knowledge and researching how high impact practices, like teaching simulations, can help prepare candidates for classrooms. This exploratory case study uses critical cases (n=2); findings suggest candidates have a developing understanding of content, which forms a solid basis for increasing their knowledge. MRTSs are addressed as a potential high impact, culturally sustaining practice for building candidates’ content knowledge. Further, HBCU TPPs can …

The Process Of Creating A Visual Identity System From Scratch, Daisy L. Macias Dec 2024

The Process Of Creating A Visual Identity System From Scratch, Daisy L. Macias

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

A visual identity system is a collection of design elements that work together to maintain consistency through various applications. A study of iconic brands clarifies how a design is successfully executed. This creative project began with selecting an industry, writing a creative brief, curating mood boards for visual research, brainstorming a brand name, creating a set of graphics that aid the brand identity, and implementing these graphics together to create a successful visual identity system. For this project, an indie cinema was selected, and based on existing visual research for this industry, the design style referenced contemporary art. The final …

Architectural Narrative: Exploring The Convergence Between Architecture And Film In Narrative Construction, Cynthia A. Carbajal

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This study explores the relationship between architecture and film, focusing on how both disciplines function as storytelling mediums through spatial and visual techniques. This research analyzes how both fields help shape experiences and the built environment. The methodology employed in this research consisted of analyzing selected films and specific architectural projects to assess the compositional techniques used within these works. The findings reveal a similarity in how architecture and film use cinematic and spatial design techniques to evoke an emotional response and heighten a narrative's depth, thereby enhancing the user’s experience. This study suggests a deeper understanding of this interlinking …

Investigating Abortion Care For Women Of Color And Low-Income Women In A Post-Roe Texas: Studying Abortion Accessibility Via Planned Parenthood, Bijahn M. Prox Dec 2024

Investigating Abortion Care For Women Of Color And Low-Income Women In A Post-Roe Texas: Studying Abortion Accessibility Via Planned Parenthood, Bijahn M. Prox

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Women of color and low-income women are among the most vulnerable parties affected by restrictive abortion policies. This study investigates the accessibility-related impacts of overturning Roe v. Wade by researching Planned Parenthood’s Texas system and services, with a primary interest in abortion care. The state’s longstanding conservative political stance provides a rich landscape to study the long-term effects of conservative reproductive policies. The study’s approach is founded on feminist theory methodology, which recognizes issues on feminism and analyzes the systems that perpetrate the injustice of interest. The reproductive injustice catalyzed by Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, thereby releasing abortion …

Challenging Myths & Addressing Intimate Partner Sexual Violence In Lgbtq+ Relationships, Nora K. Whitten Dec 2024

Challenging Myths & Addressing Intimate Partner Sexual Violence In Lgbtq+ Relationships, Nora K. Whitten

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Intimate partner violence (IPV), including intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV), is a public health crisis that disproportionately affects members of the LGBTQ+ community. This paper draws upon related, though limited, research to identify the five prevalent myths surrounding IPSV in LGBTQ+ relationships, addressing the following misconceptions: 1) IPSV can only occur in heterosexual relationships, 2) IPSV in LGBTQ+ relationships is not as severe, 3) Women cannot commit acts of sexual violence, 4) The more “masculine” partner is always the perpetrator, and 5) IPSV is a “mutual fight” among partners of the same sex. These myths perpetuate victim-blaming, minimize the severity …

Frederick Crews: An Ode To Joy, Stewart Justman

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

Even critics of Frederick Crews seem to recognize that there is something wonderful about his biography of Freud. Unlike the skepticism which is simply intellectual negativity, Crews’ skepticism is affirmative in character, delighting in the burden of argument. Crews celebrates a world in which reasoned inquiry is possible. His work breathes joy.

In The Mix: Hip Hop's Impact On Genre Development And Cultural Influence In African And Jamaican Music, Kinzi Kabadeh

Postgraduate

In this exegesis, I contend that certain compositional elements and production methods of dancehall, amapiano, and afrobeats demonstrate hip hop’s influence on contemporary Jamaican and African electronic music. In particular, the drum programming, track mixing, and use of sampling demonstrate a cross-pollination and cultural transfer between the two forms of music (on one hand, the African and Jamaican genres of dancehall, amapiano, and afrobeats, and on the other, the African American music of hip hop). These genres are fundamental to contemporary Black culture and share origins as vehicles for resistance to oppressive forces.

This chapter concerns the development of a First World War Digital Humanities project at a small US liberal arts college. The project, based on a manuscript collection of documents, photographs, artefacts, and nearly 300 letters (primarily written between 1915 and 1919), was designed from the beginning to be truly collaborative, featuring the creative and scholarly work of undergraduate students, a faculty member, a librarian, and an archivist to tell a unique story from the Western Front. What initially began as a project to digitally preserve and promote primary source materials for a wider audience adapted and changed over the course …

Burgeoning global trade and colonial policies promoted transformations in land use and agriculture throughout tropical regions in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the local and regional ecological consequences of landscape changes are still being identified and analysed. The Philippine Archipelago, which experienced successive colonial regimes across more than 7100 islands, exemplifies the multiplicity of ecological outcomes produced by these transformations. To better characterise diverse landscape change, we use colonial censuses and datasets to assess land use, production and agricultural yields in the Philippines during the late Spanish and early U.S. colonial periods (ca. 1870–1925). Our novel digital, quantitative analysis …

Gamified Learning: Applying Game Design Thinking In Education, Qiaoxin Deng

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

Gamification is an Education Strategy It has gained popularity in recent years. Gamification is a means to foster student engagement and improve their learning journeys. It's about applying game design elements in non-game contexts. This is primarily used in educational settings. Gamification of learning makes it more engaging and fun by introducing rewards, challenges, and competition. By adding rewards, challenges, and competition, gamification makes learning more interesting and interactive (2020).In this essay, I will be discussing the concept of gamification. Its advantages and disadvantages will be explored. It will also give examples, including Duolingo and Quizlet, to illustrate how it …

The Evolution And Preservation Of Video Games: An Artistic And Cultural Journey, Dhru Fuletra Dec 2024

The Evolution And Preservation Of Video Games: An Artistic And Cultural Journey, Dhru Fuletra

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

From the first time I held a game controller, video games have been a fundamental part of my life. They started as simple, pixel-filled adventures on early consoles and have grown into the vast, immersive worlds we explore on today’s advanced systems. For me, they’ve always been more than just a way to pass the time; they’ve been gateways to alternate realities where creativity, interaction, and storytelling seamlessly come together. Over the years, video games have transformed from casual hobbies into intricate cultural phenomena and, importantly, into a recognized art form. In this essay, I contend that video games are …

Valorant's Interlinked To Theory Of Representation (Race And Culture) And Feminist Coflict Theory, Gerald Susanteo

ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies

A brief introduction to Valorant to new ears and eyes is that Valorant is a video game and what I will be calling a media that was released by Riot Games in 2020, Valorant is a tactical FPS (first person shooter) game that blends strategic gameplay with an immersive sci-fi narrative. The setting of the game takes place in a world destabilized by the mysterious "First Light" event which gives these agents called Radiants their powers and abilities. The game first introduces the organization called Kingdom Corporation as a central antagonist exploiting the Radiants who, like I explained earlier, are …
