Fostering Inclusivity Through Community Arts Programs, Courtney Mayberry Feb 2025

Fostering Inclusivity Through Community Arts Programs, Courtney Mayberry

CAFE Symposium 2025

The utilization of community arts projects to build diverse and prosperous communities is vital in fostering inclusion rather than isolation within participating communities. Community arts projects can be built to offer individuals a means to connect with their community through self-expression and the celebration of their individuality. This is especially important in giving marginalized groups a voice, such as people with disabilities.

"Getting Something To Eat In Jackson: The Labor Of Feeding The Family", Joseph Ewoodzie Dr. Feb 2025

"Getting Something To Eat In Jackson: The Labor Of Feeding The Family", Joseph Ewoodzie Dr.

Black American Awareness Committee

Feeding oneself is labor. It is quotidian labor, and that labor is racialized and gendered--food scholars have long established this. My work adds to this conversation by exploring the socio-economic circumstances under which differently classed contemporary Black Southerners take on this labor. I share stories and insights of my time in kitchens, grocery stores, soup kitchens, and fine dining restaurants with Mississippians as they feed themselves.

This presentation was sponsored by the Black American Awareness Committee. Funding was provided by SAFAC.

“These Are Not Ordinary Criminals!” The First War Crimes Trial At The People's Tribunal And Its Implications In Post-Holocaust Romania, Stefan Cristian Ionescu Feb 2025

“These Are Not Ordinary Criminals!” The First War Crimes Trial At The People's Tribunal And Its Implications In Post-Holocaust Romania, Stefan Cristian Ionescu

History Faculty Articles and Research

This article examines the neglected war crimes trials of Holocaust perpetrators that took place at the People's Tribunal in early postwar Romania, focusing especially on the first trial (the “Macici group”). The article shows that in spite of the political interferences by the new pro-communist regime and the USSR, the Macici group trial in particular, and the first war crimes trials in general, were not Stalinist show trials or fake trials and they sentenced real war criminals and accurately captured Romania's participation in the Holocaust. Unlike the Antonescu group trial – that indicted the former pro-Nazi dictator and his closest …

Marginalized, Secularized, And Popularized? The Prevalence And Patterns Of Paranormal Belief In The United Kingdom, Tom Clark, Joseph O. Baker, Christoper D. Bader Feb 2025

Marginalized, Secularized, And Popularized? The Prevalence And Patterns Of Paranormal Belief In The United Kingdom, Tom Clark, Joseph O. Baker, Christoper D. Bader

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

There is growing recognition of the prevalence of paranormal beliefs in Western countries. However, most of this interest has been focused on the United States and robust, comparative data remain limited. This study extends this literature to report findings from a national survey of the United Kingdom designed to assess the prevalence and patterns of paranormal beliefs. Although there are many similarities to previous research, the results also suggest that there are significant differences in the scope, clustering, and patterns of paranormalism across contexts. The study makes four contributions to research on the paranormal by a) reiterating the continuing popularity …

Rutledge, Middleton, Heyward, And Lynch: Founding Fathers From South Carolina, Clayton Alexander Moss Feb 2025

Rutledge, Middleton, Heyward, And Lynch: Founding Fathers From South Carolina, Clayton Alexander Moss

Masters Theses

The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in history. It established the American colonies as independent states, and its philosophical ideals regarding freedom guided the United States and other nations worldwide. Fifty-six men signed the Declaration as representatives of their respective colonies, and each contributed to this historic document and the Revolution. The four signatories representing South Carolina, Thomas Lynch Jr., Arthur Middleton, Edward Rutledge, and Thomas Heyward Jr., were a group of young men who contributed their names and ideals during the American Revolution and the work they did before, during, and after the Second …

Cherokee Removal Along The Trail, 1838-1839: Separating Fact From Fiction, John Norman Patterson Feb 2025

Cherokee Removal Along The Trail, 1838-1839: Separating Fact From Fiction, John Norman Patterson

Masters Theses

The misinformation and misunderstandings concerning Cherokee Indian removal has resulted from how subsequent generations of historians and Cherokees have talked and written about it. The historiography of Indian removal is quite extensive but with respect to Cherokee removal not so much because most of the original documents kept by the Cherokees unexplainably disappeared in the nineteenth century. The drought of 1837-1838 was used as an excuse by John Ross and Lewis Ross to insist that the northern route be used to remove the remaining Cherokees to Indian Territory. Evidence presented clearly demonstrates that both men sought to enrich themselves at …
