Articles
Chronic pain is a common condition that has significant negative effects on individuals and society. Opioids continue to be the primary treatment provided to the billions of individuals with chronic pain, despite their general lack of efficacy and significant negative side effects. A growing body of research supports the potential of therapeutic hypnosis for helping individuals better manage their chronic pain. However, access to this treatment is limited. The availability of a hypnosis digital therapeutic has the potential to address this access problem. The current study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of a digital therapeutic hypnosis prototype (not yet …

Familiar New Histories: Promenade Theatre And Local Amateur Actors In A Creative Heritage Project, Jayne Gold
Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Building upon previous work in the creative heritage sector, in this paper I analyse A Time Traveller’s Guide to Theatrical Brecon, a promenade production funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, performed on the streets of Brecon in mid Wales, UK in 2021. The performance involved local amateur actors from Brecon Little Theatre and was accompanied by a map and educational resources and workshops for local schools. It brought to life stories from Brecon’s theatre history for its local residents. Brecon Little Theatre members created and performed the promenade performance, creatively engaging with historical material to write, direct, rehearse, …

Personalizing And Decolonizing General Education: A Case Study In Gamifying Global Art History Curriculum, James Hutson, Trent Olsen, Robyne Elder
Faculty Scholarship
This study explores the transformation of general education art history courses at a liberal arts college, shifting from Eurocentric surveys to a decolonized, gamified, and student-centered curriculum. Through a longitudinal mixed-methods design, the research evaluates the integration of global narratives and innovative teaching strategies to enhance student engagement and global competencies. Data from pre- and post-implementation surveys with faculty, students, and instructional designers demonstrate significant improvements in student satisfaction, cultural openness, and engagement with global art. Challenges include navigating demographic skews, addressing the complexity of gamified structures, and refining assignment instructions. Findings highlight the value of curriculum redesigns that promote …

“By The Sound Of Sparrows, I Knew It Was Dawn”: The Impact Of Women’S Latest Protests In Iran, Antonia Felix
Educational Leadership Department Publications
In Iran, men and women have protested against human rights abuses and other damaging actions and policies by the clerical leadership since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Major uprisings in the past 25 years include the Green Movement and widespread protests against economic crises. I’d like to share some facts about the two most recent movements, powerful campaigns built on decades of Iranian women’s fight for justice.

“Tikkun” Viewed From The Perspective Of Systems Philosophy, Martin Zwick
“Tikkun” Viewed From The Perspective Of Systems Philosophy, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Understanding the idea of tikkun, as it appears in tikkun olam and tikkun ha’yetser, can be enriched by ideas from systems philosophy. From a systems perspective, “moral evil“ – the flaws of individual human beings, which create the need for tikkun ha’yetser – is a special case of “natural evil” – the dangers to life and especially to humanity from the natural world and from societal moral evil, which create the need for tikkun olam. Natural evil is in turn a special case of “metaphysical evil” – flaws in olam (which include those of yetser) that are ubiquitous, …
Spoken Word Percussion And Its Intersection With Communication, Gwen Leuschen
Spoken Word Percussion And Its Intersection With Communication, Gwen Leuschen
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Music is a form of communication, whether expressing emotion, telling a story, or delivering information. Communication is widely used in music. This communication takes place by conveying ideas through the sound produced by performers. This form of musical communication cues the audience into the messages, information, and emotions the composers intended. However, when text or spoken word is implemented into music, how does this affect the communication, and how can this be analyzed? This paper explores the history of music and spoken word, explains applicable communication theories, and finally applies these theories to music with spoken word, emphasizing percussion.

Harriet Beecher Stowe: Saints And Sinners Analysis Of The Moral Suasion And Motivations Behind The Creation Of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Makendric James Bowman
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
This project examines the motivations behind Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (UTC), focusing on how her desire for both financial gain and moral reform shaped her writing. Stowe’s use of religious themes to expose the moral and human costs of slavery positioned her novel at the center of national debate, forcing both defenders and opponents of slavery to confront uncomfortable truths. Her book ultimately made her the best-selling author of the 19th century, selling 300,000 copies mostly by door-to-door subscriptions. This is equivalent to about 4.4 million Americans today who do not have access to Amazon or bookstores. Even …

Recovering Palestinian Lives: Qudsiyya Khurshid From Mandate Palestine To Postwar Pennsylvania, Andrea L. Stanton
Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
This article works to recover the life story of Qudsiyya Khurshid, a once well-known Mandate Palestinian intellectual and educator, who wrote essays for publication and for broadcasting on the Palestine Broadcasting Service, while working as a principal at girls’ schools in al-Bireh and Jerusalem. One of a number of educated women active in the Mandate public sphere, she disappeared from public consciousness after the Nakba. But in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where she had moved with her husband, a naturalized U.S. citizen, she became a prominent figure in civic work and as a community speaker on Palestinian and Middle Eastern life …

The Valley of Cuelgamuros, until recently known as the Valley of the Fallen, lies about 35 miles outside of Madrid. Inaugurated by the dictator Francisco Franco in 1959, this landmark comprises a vast underground basilica and houses the mostly anonymous remains of 34,000 Spaniards who died during the civil war (1936–1939) and its repressive aftermath. Since the early 2000s, the Valley has been a political lightning rod in a country that has long struggled with how to address the legacies of its authoritarian past. Ongoing debates among politicians, scholars, and journalists have revolved around the possibility of the Valley’s ‘resignification’ …

Whether it be through her decades-long commitment to NYCHA and NAACP, or through her countless efforts to sustain and grow with Co-Op City, Peterson has shaped her surroundings. Being a ‘community-minded’ person reverberates throughout her academic and professional career, having even managed Edenwald houses at a point in her life. Through this and many other management opportunities, Peterson shares the impact of her understanding on the technicalities of how to progress a community. Peterson has beautifully contributed to all aspects of Co-Op City, especially in regards …
