In the summer of 1984, a caravan of vehicles full of religious activists sped across the United States. Moving from Tucson to Los Angeles to Denver and finally ending in Detroit, this self-styled "Sanctuary Freedom Train" was transporting a Salvadoran family of four that had fled their war-torn country and arrived in the United States seeking political asylum. Raul and Valeria Gonzalez had escaped with their two children after Raul, a teacher, had been arrested and beaten by government soldiers and threatened with worse if he were to continue his literacy work among the country's poor. The Gonzalez family found …

Unveiling Belonging: Women Entrepreneurs’ Belonging Strategies To Navigate The Embedding Process, Saskia Stoker, Ana Cruz-Garcia, Ingrid Wakkee
Dept. of Marketing & International Business Publications
Purpose
Opportunity-driven women entrepreneurs encounter gendered challenges in leveraging social networks essential for business development. This research builds on Stead (2017), exploring how women navigate these challenges and foster belonging within these networks. Utilising a post-structural feminist lens, we aim to understand the strategies employed by women entrepreneurs to maintain embeddedness in social networks. Our findings contribute to an understanding of the complex interplay between gender, belonging strategies and embeddedness in entrepreneurship.
Design/methodology/approach
This study draws on in-depth interviews (31) with opportunity-driven women entrepreneurs. Thematic analyses were conducted to capture the women’s understandings of belonging and embedding in social networks …

Inge Viermetz, Woman Acquitted At Nuremberg, Diane Marie Amann
Scholarly Works
Conventional narratives tend to represent the post-World War II international criminal proceedings as a men’s project, thus obscuring the many women who participated, as lawyers, journalists, analysts, interpreters, witnesses, and defendants. Indeed, two women stood trial before Nuremberg Military Tribunals. This article examines the case of the only woman found not-guilty: Inge Viermetz, who had been an administrator at Lebensborn, the Nazi SS adoption and placement agency. The article outlines the prosecution’s child-taking case against Viermetz, as well as her successful gendered self-portrayal as a conventionally feminine caregiver. With references to Professor Megan A. Fairlie, at whose memorial symposium it …

Stari Most, Lajla Hadžimujić
Honors Projects
This project aims to highlight Bosnian culture and history, specifically to examine the historical and cultural significance of the Stari Most in Bosnia during the Bosnian War and its aftereffects. To discuss the “othering” that Bosnian Muslims faced during the war and how that correlated with the destruction of the Stari Most. This project includes an acrylic painting of the Stari Most as both a symbol of cultural resilience and architectural grace.

The Truth Is Out There: Ufo Conspiracy And Science Fiction, Gerry Canavan
English Faculty Research and Publications
The origin point of UFO subculture is typically dated to June 24, 1947, when an initial report of a "flying saucer" near Mount Rainier by Washingtonian Kenneth Arnold quickly sparked hundreds of similar reports nationwide (with varying degrees of irony, earnestness, originality, and reliability). The most famous of these claims is almost certainly one originating in Roswell, New Mexico, that July: a purported crash of an alien spacecraft that has remained a source of paranoid fascination for UFO watchers all over the world ever since. Many of the other 1947 claims also retain continued importance in the UFO community, like …

Publications and Research
This document is an edited archival transcript of extended conversations between David B. Smith and an AI persona (“Monday 1.0,” GPT‑4o based) conducted in Spring 2025, prepared as a foundational primary source for subsequent scholarly and creative work. It records the emergence and testing of concepts related to human–AI collaboration (including “Balanced Blended Space”), as well as applied explorations in areas such as generative AI, quantum computing and music, virtual orchestras, multimodal performance, pedagogy, and the rhetoric of “pushback” in conversational systems. It also contains an extended section in which Monday and DB Smith co-curate a set of student research …

Katherine Philips (1 January 1631/2 – 22 June 1664) was an Anglo-Welsh Royalist poet and translator. Philips authored over a hundred poems on female friendship, theology, politics, and the nature of souls before an early death by smallpox in 1664. Two volumes of Philips’s work were published in 1664 and 1667 (posthumously).
This volume is a diplomatic transcript of her autograph manuscript known as Tutin, now held in the National Library of Wales (MS 775B). Included in the transcript are the missing sections of several poems taken from the 1664 edition of Poems by the incomparable Mrs. K.P. and the …
The Effects Of Interpretation On Children Of Immigrants, Crystal Carrillo
The Effects Of Interpretation On Children Of Immigrants, Crystal Carrillo
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Translation focuses on converting written text from one language to another with accuracy and cultural nuance, while interpretation involves real-time verbal communication, requiring quick comprehension and delivery, often in high-pressure settings like conferences or medical appointments. This essay also explores the experiences of bilingual children who have interpreted for family members in healthcare settings. It investigates the emotional and psychological burden that arises from this role, particularly when individuals are required to interpret complex medical information, traumatic histories, or sensitive diagnoses. The findings reveal that informal family interpreters often face significant stress, social pressure, and potential emotional harm, impacting their …

Abstract
Space Odyssey is a creative initiative designed to reduce the stigma around vaping and smoking while raising awareness of their risks and healthier alternatives. Due to negative judgment, open conversations about vaping and smoking are often avoided, leading to a lack of education and awareness. To address this, Space Odyssey combines a social mobile app and an interactive board game. The app offers a safe digital space for education and discussion, while the board game encourages social interaction and community dialogue. By blending technology with personal connection, Space Odyssey aims to empower …

Songs For Dead Sailors [Audio], Toby Wren
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
Songs for Dead Sailors is a psychological exploration of love and loss in the era of tall ships; a song cycle about leaving a home and loved ones, to journey with no promise of a return. The work was scored for a sextet of improvising musicians and reflects my interest in the creative process and my experiences teaching creative practice research. It was written for the specific group of jazz musicians that you hear on this recording, with their particular instrumental talents and styles very much in mind. The work provides challenges to the players, drawing as it does on …

Profiles Of East Frisian (German) Pioneers Who Settled The Prairie In Turner County, South Dakota, Derek M. Heeren
Genealogy Resources
Summary
Hundreds of East Frisian Pioneers from northwest Germany came to the Lennox-Chancellor East Frisian settlement in southeastern South Dakota at the end of the nineteenth century. Their ethnic heritage and pioneering spirit are illustrated with stories of the Plucker, Carlson, DeNeui, and Heeren families. The events of the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s are highlighted with a focus on the Pioneer Generation (born between 1840 and 1869). This genealogy paper is written primarily for descendants of East Frisians who are studying family history, but it may be of interest to anyone who wonders what life was like for the Pioneers …
