“Virtual Reality And Creativity: Evaluating Immersive Painting Experiences And Art-Based Mindfulness” Presented By Heli Puhakka, Heli Puhakka
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
New affordable head-mounted displays and interactive virtual technologies provide opportunities for researchers and practitioners to create and experience mindfulness. The use of virtual reality for art-based mindfulness practices is novel and promotes full-body, immersive experiences to improve mood, however, researchers and practitioners have a limited understanding of mindfulness and creativity in the virtual environment. This paper identifies the research gap by examining how active art-based mindfulness practices in virtual reality promote mindfulness, compared to passive methods such as viewing a virtual image to experience relaxation. Fourteen participants were interviewed in the qualitative ethnographic study. Methods included semi-structured interviews, direct observation, …

A Lesson Featuring The French Pronoun On That Teaches Us About Imperceptibility, Ngọc Hải Nguyễn '26
A Lesson Featuring The French Pronoun On That Teaches Us About Imperceptibility, Ngọc Hải Nguyễn '26
Previously Language Studies Research Symposium
The French pronoun « on » presents a unique political case study. According to the French Academy, the pronoun, though limited to the subject position of a sentence, has potential usage to refer to any person or group of people. In everyday usage, the pronoun simply replace the French 'we' equivalent (nous). However, on does not limit itself to just the aforementioned use—instead, it can (and has been) used to replace any personal pronouns (I-je, you-tu, you-vous, il-he/it, elle-she/it, ils/elles–they [gendered accordingly]), and even certain undefined/indefinite ones (like someone, anyone, one, etc.). On is a good discussion point about the …

Neuroarts And Neuroaesthetics, James Hutson, Piper Hutson
Neuroarts And Neuroaesthetics, James Hutson, Piper Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Recent advancements in neuroarts and neuroaesthetics have elucidated the relationship between artistic engagement and neural processes, emphasizing the impact of aesthetic experiences on cognitive and emotional well-being. Central to this exploration is the NeuroArts Blueprint initiative, which consolidates interdisciplinary research to better understand the impactful role of the arts on brain function and health outcomes. Empirical studies highlight how exposure to art, such as music or visual stimuli, activates neural circuits involved in emotion regulation, memory, and reward processing, particularly engaging the medial orbitofrontal cortex. Innovations such as haptic and electro-tactile devices have introduced novel sensory modalities that not only …

The Golem, Sayanti Ganguly Puckett Dr.
Sabbatical Projects
My research explores the Jewish mythical figure of the golem and the symbolism behind it from contradictory angles that juxtapose the figure as a subservient defender of the oppressed Jews and as a monster over whom his creator has lost control and who then runs amok slaughtering those it is created to protect. My research attempts to make sense of these clashing propensities to understand how this figure can become such a bewildering yet ominous figure to Christians and Jews alike. Additionally, in the ultimate destruction of the golem, I would like to explore societal anxieties, fears, and securities about …

Oral Histories
Abstract
Interviewer: Mark Naison, Ryan Purcell, Shellae Versey
Interviewee: Kazambe Balagun
In this second part of an interview with Kazembe Balagun, he discusses Co-Op City’s neighborly qualities in depth, specifically in regards to the community it fosters for all ages. Kazambe’s knowledge is direct evidence that defies the stigmatized viewpoints and negative stereotypes on public housing. This viewpoint is transcended through Balagun’s passionate dialogue on the importance of children and the development of the youth in Co-Op City, his engagement with community-based activities, as well as his extensive knowledge on local politics. As Balagun stresses the importance of political involvement …

Exploring The “4-Trans” In Bi/Multilingual Teacher Education: Introduction To The Special Issue, Sandra I. Musanti, David Martinez-Prieto, Xiaodi Zhou
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
In this introductory essay, the editors of the special issue on the 4-trans in bi/multilingual teacher education, highlight the contributions of one or more of the “4-trans” lenses—transnationalism, transculturalism, translanguaging, and transdisciplinarity—to explain, question, challenge, or propose new ways of understanding bi/multilingual teacher education. Eight articles that challenge monolithic perspectives of teacher education are presented.

Dialogic Foundations Of The “4-Trans” Framework: Towards A Comprehensive And Dynamic Understanding Of Multilingual Teacher Education, David Martinez-Prieto, Sandra I. Musanti, Xiaodi Zhou
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
In this article, we develop the “4-trans” framework by reflecting on the way current multilingual teacher preparation scholarship has addressed translanguaging, transnationalism, transculturality, and transdisciplinarity either in compartmentalized or integrative manners. While current literature has addressed some “trans” intersections, we propose the enunciation of the “4-trans” as permeable and complementary principles in multilingual education that can serve to better examine the experiences and challenges of multilingual pre-service teachers. To amalgamate the “4-trans” to examine the development of multilingual pre-service teachers, this article describes the construction of a multidimensional framework based on a dialogic conception of social …

Detangling Beauty, Curly Hair, And Race: (Re)Interpreting Beauty And Latinx Racial Identities Through Natural Hair Narratives, Katie Duarte
Detangling Beauty, Curly Hair, And Race: (Re)Interpreting Beauty And Latinx Racial Identities Through Natural Hair Narratives, Katie Duarte
Latin American and Latino/a Studies: Faculty Publications
The natural hair movement aims to encourage people from the Black diaspora to embrace their natural afro-textured hair, which has facilitated a cultural change in the United States. This article asks how Dominican and Dominican-American women in New York City interpret the racialized and gendered discourse through narratives about their hair. Dominican racial identity has historically relied on a rhetoric of Indo-Hispanicity (“brownness”) for its simultaneous proximity to whiteness and distance from Blackness. However, afro-textured hair is becoming more popular among Dominicans in the Dominican Republic and the United States. This article utilizes hair as a cultural tool to trace …

Seeking Common Ground With A Conversational Chatbot, Judit Dombi, Tetyana Sydorenko, Veronika Timpe-Laughlin
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Conversational AI is advancing rapidly, enabling significant improvements in chatbots’ conversational abilities. Currently, available conversational chatbots (e.g., Snapchat’s MyAI) appear to generate fairly realistic, often human-like output. As collaboration between humans and machines becomes more common, and AI systems are increasingly viewed as more than just tools, understanding human communication in such contexts is crucial. Despite the vast array of applications and the increasing number of human-bot interactions, research on how humans interact with conversational chatbots is scarce. One possible reason for this gap is that studying human-computer communication may require adaptations of existing pragmatic frameworks, due to the unique …
“Give A Girl An Education”: Jane Austen On Women’S Academic And Intellectual Enrichment, Ellie Ward
“Give A Girl An Education”: Jane Austen On Women’S Academic And Intellectual Enrichment, Ellie Ward
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis explores how Jane Austen, through her novels Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Mansfield Park, contributed to the cultural conversations surrounding women’s education in Georgian-era England. While women’s education at the time was limited and controversial, Austen critiques the prevailing system and supports the intellectual growth of women. Moreover, this thesis analyzes the influence upon Austen's position, beginning with her own educational history and expanding to consider the effect of Enlightenment ideology, particularly the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, Thomas Gisborne, and Hannah More, on Austen’s thinking. Ultimately, Austen challenges the restrictions placed on women’s …

Javier Milei, Fenómeno Barrial: Political Slogans As Narrative, Sawyer J. Deshon
Senior Honors Theses
Javier Milei won Argentina’s 2023 presidential race to the surprise of many. His prolific use of political slogans on social media has continued into his presidency, contextualizing his agenda and the potential image he seeks to project when pursuing reelection in 2027. This investigation conducts a critical reading of Javier Milei’s political slogans through the lens of Walter R. Fisher’s narrative paradigm, identifying a clear narrative arc that portrays Milei as a populist political outsider, villainizes the political elite of Argentina, and promises a thriving Argentina rooted in libertarian fiscal policy. The subsequent rhetorical analysis integrates quantitative and qualitative assessments …

The Icarian Dilemma: The Battle Of Faith Versus Identity Addressed With Scenic Design, Allistar G. Barrett
Senior Honors Theses
American Christians and the LGBTQ+ community have long been in a cultural war with one another. However, queer Christians – individuals who are both LGBTQ+ and Christian – have rarely found solace in either community, instead being shunned and ostracized for their beliefs and identities. Using the transformative art of theatre to address cultural divides, a theatrical scenic design was developed for Joe Calarco’s Shakespeare’s R & J, a retelling of the traditional Romeo and Juliet script through the lives of four Catholic school girls. This design uses the Greek mythology of Icarus, Catholic culture, the original Romeo and Juliet, …
