Surviving The Void: Identity Threats And The Plague Of Violence In Rawi Hage’S De Niro’S Game, Yasmine Nabil M. A. Ahmed Dr

Computer Science

Abstract In the postcolonial era, many third-world countries, instead of enjoying prosperity, were driven into longterm civil wars and political unrest. Among the Arab countries which were plagued by a prolonged social conflict is Lebanon where the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) lasted nearly 15 years, devastating the social fabric of the country. Among the novelists who capture this critical period in the history of Lebanon is the Lebanese-Canadian author Rawi Hage. Characterized by his nihilist and apocalyptic tone, Rawi Hage portrays, in his De Niro’s Game (2006), the chaos of war and its impact on personal and national identities. Through …

A Disruptive Innovation: Teaching Students To Take Risks In The Creative Industries, Jessica Hughes May 2025

A Disruptive Innovation: Teaching Students To Take Risks In The Creative Industries, Jessica Hughes

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This article addresses the reluctance of creative industries students to embrace risk in their critical analyses and creative projects, often leading to formulaic work. Drawing on pedagogical reflections, it outlines the introduction of a revised project structure, 'The Disruptive Innovation,' designed to deliberately encourage students to reach beyond their creative comfort zones. This new structure asks students to intentionally disrupt and transform their initial, 'safe' creative work. By applying flow theory and shifting assessment emphasis toward the documented process of experimentation rather than the final product, the approach aims to build resilience against anxieties about failure. This pedagogical shift seeks …

The Creative Classroom: A Phenomenological Study Of Engagement In Students With Adhd, Kathleen A. Johnson

Art 895 Research Papers

Qualitative research guides this engagement study with a Phenomenological approach. The researcher aims to examine how creative expression fosters increased engagement among students with ADHD. Students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often approach their education differently than neurotypical students. Neurodivergent students frequently encounter challenges related to focus, impulse control, and organization. However, the cognitive benefits of art education enable these students to utilize their creative thinking and problem-solving skills, resulting in engagement that aligns with their natural abilities. The art classroom provides experiential learning opportunities that benefit engagement. By exploring the unique intersection of creativity and learning, this research highlights the …

Meeting People Where They Are At: Accessible Approaches To Ceramic Design And The Artistic Process, Molly E. Thompson

Publications and Research

This paper explores accessibility for disabled people in ceramics, drawing upon my personal experiences as a disabled potter at Artistry Community Arts Center in Vermont. I begin with a discussion of how the process of creating pottery can be made more accessible, with a list of adaptable tools I have discovered and anecdotes about how pottery instructors can adapt their teaching styles to different needs. I then explore different examples of adaptive pottery made specifically for disabled people, including some of my own work. While recounting my own successes and failures in pottery production, I conclude that imperfection is the …

Code To Cast, Shahrzad Motallebi May 2025

Code To Cast, Shahrzad Motallebi

Graduate Artistry Projects and Performances

This dissertation explores the intersection of algorithmic jewelry design, digital fabrication, and cultural memory. By integrating parametric modeling software such as Rhino and Grasshopper with traditional lost-wax casting methods, this research creates a dialogue between historical Persian geometric patterns and contemporary wearable art. Through this hybrid approach, the work contributes to contemporary jewelry discourse, demonstrating how ancient motifs can be algorithmically reinterpreted into innovative, culturally resonant forms. The practice engages directly with themes of identity, heritage, and technological innovation, referencing the approaches of contemporary artist-jewelers like Giovanni Corvaja, Nora Fok, David Huycke, and Dries Verbruggen. Results include unique collections of …

Balance, Liberty, And Law: Montesquieu’S Legacy In U.S. Constitutional Thought, Christian Yockey May 2025

Balance, Liberty, And Law: Montesquieu’S Legacy In U.S. Constitutional Thought, Christian Yockey

History Student Research

In 1787, a Constitutional Convention was convened to revise the weak Articles of Confederation. However, the delegates at this convention ended up creating an entirely new system of government—that is one with a much more powerful structure of federal power. This paper examines the influence of the French philosopher Baron de Montesquieu on this process and the creation of early U.S. political culture. While previous academic scholarship has acknowledged Montesquieu’s influence on this process of writing the Constitution, this paper seeks to explore further the specific ways his influence shows itself in the U.S. Constitution and the creation of U.S. …

Rose, The Commissioner, And The Hall, Richard C. Crepeau May 2025

Rose, The Commissioner, And The Hall, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It seems that the biggest news in baseball this week is off the field. Usually, that is not a good thing. Yesterday, the Commissioner of Baseball, Rob Manfred, announced that Pete Rose and sixteen other players have been re-instated from baseball’s “permanently ineligible” list. Among the sixteen others are several players caught up in the Black Sox scandal of 1919.

Weaving An Alternative Food System: The Implications Of‬‭ Campesino‬‭ Community‬ Structures For Food Sovereignty In New England‬, Torrance Wagner May 2025

Weaving An Alternative Food System: The Implications Of‬‭ Campesino‬‭ Community‬ Structures For Food Sovereignty In New England‬, Torrance Wagner

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

This exploration seeks to detangle the diverse lines of thinking, reasoning, and acting that make up the concept of food sovereignty, and to do so with the intention of understanding what its most actionable principles are. The topic is inspired by the traditional community-scale agriculture of campesino communities throughout Latin America, but specifically in the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca, Mexico. The ultimate questions are if and how the collectivity that often exists in these cultures can be applied to local food systems in New England to support regional food sovereignty. The ideas presented are drawn from personal experience, theoretical academic …

Children As Legacy: Fostering A Viable, Interracial Future In Chesnutt’S The Marrow Of Tradition, Allison Marchand May 2025

Children As Legacy: Fostering A Viable, Interracial Future In Chesnutt’S The Marrow Of Tradition, Allison Marchand

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Charles W. Chesnutt believed The Marrow of Tradition (1901) would be his magnum opus. In a letter to Booker T. Washington, he described it as “by far the best thing I have done” and in another, described how he sent it to Theodore Roosevelt, hoping it might help the president understand the race problem (McElrath 159; 169). The novel details the events of and leading up to a race riot in the fictional Wellington, North Carolina. Inspired by the 1898 coup d’etat and massacre in Wilmington, North Carolina, Chesnutt wrote The Marrow of Tradition with “the hope that it might …

The Interconnectedness Of Fun Home On Page And Stage, Livia M. Nocito May 2025

The Interconnectedness Of Fun Home On Page And Stage, Livia M. Nocito

English and Creative Writing Independent Study Projects

In Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel, instances of Alison’s emotional “rise,” or openness in being queer, and Bruce’s “descent,” or need to conform, in the book are further supplemented by translations made into the musical through leitmotif and musical composition. This cements not only their roles as Daedalus and Icarus respectively in the metaphor Alison presents in her memoir, but also highlights their lived experiences in a way that truly extends Alison’s liberation as a lesbian to be elevated in grandeur and Bruce’s stifling life to be as damning as Icarus’s fall into the sea.

"Just Keep Telling The Story": Wes Anderson's Carefully Crafted Vessels Of Loss, Claire Lewis May 2025

"Just Keep Telling The Story": Wes Anderson's Carefully Crafted Vessels Of Loss, Claire Lewis

Honors College Theses

Wes Anderson’s 2023 feature film Asteroid City was met with a more polarized critical and audience response than any of his prior films. Evident in this response is an increasingly apparent distinction between the formal conventions of his films – encompassing elements such as visual aesthetic, filmmaking techniques, and storytelling structure – and the emotional and thematic content. In this paper, I examine the critical response to Asteroid City as well as the perceived dissonance between these two major aspects of his filmmaking in order to explore the relationship between the two, specifically as it pertains to the themes of …

This study will provide potential insights that result …

Adaptive Art Teaching Strategies: Empowering Students And Paraprofessionals In The Inclusive Art Classroom, Kameran Dostal May 2025

Adaptive Art Teaching Strategies: Empowering Students And Paraprofessionals In The Inclusive Art Classroom, Kameran Dostal

Art 895 Research Papers

In the art room, differentiation for students with exceptional disabilities presents unique challenges. Some art educators teach in self-contained settings (e.g. adaptive art classes), other art educators teach in inclusive art room settings (where students with disabilities are integrated into the art room), and others teach a combination of both. The research on adaptive art programs and adaptive teaching practices has the potential to impact students with disabilities as a piece of advocacy to showcase the impact of the visual arts on their IEP goals and fine motor skills. The intention is that this research re-examines best practices in teaching …

Developing Anti-Racist Teaching Practices To Represent A Diverse Student Population, Naomi Brumm May 2025

Developing Anti-Racist Teaching Practices To Represent A Diverse Student Population, Naomi Brumm

Art 895 Research Papers

The issue that this case study will address is the need for an anti-racist high school art curriculum. In order to better represent today’s diverse society, educators need to incorporate anti-racist teaching practices both within their curriculum and their classroom environments. I will examine how systemic racism as a society has led to lack of diversity within the field of art education and identify what anti-racist pedagogical practices can be put into place to combat it.

A Movement In Process: The Effects Of Post-Dictatorship Politics On The Legalization Of Abortion In Argentina, Corinne J. Robbins

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

Access to abortion is an inherently critical aspect of sexual and reproductive rights. That is to say that access to safe abortions is of equal importance to guaranteeing a person’s right to safety during the pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period. This research primarily focuses on the trajectory of the legalization of abortion in Argentina after the end of the last military Dictatorship (1976-1983), the factors that impacted the movement, and how the movement is received in Argentina today. Argentina’s current administration has been unsupportive of the current abortion law, but past successes demonstrate that abortion rights activists in Argentina are …
