Ebony Heroes: The United States Colored Troops From Kentucky During The War Between The States, Robert B. Mccormack
Ebony Heroes: The United States Colored Troops From Kentucky During The War Between The States, Robert B. Mccormack
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Sergeant Major Thomas Boswell, a soldier assigned to the 116th US Colored Infantry Regiment (USCI) asserted, “We are Kentucky boys, and there is no regiment in the field that ever fought better. We can boast of being the heroes of eight hard-fought battles, and this we deem a sufficient recommendation for our discharge…” 1 The fog of history has stilled the voices of the intrepid men, the colored Kentuckians, who populated the ranks of the federal army who served during the 1861-1865 War Between the States as the United States Colored Troops. The federal government, rather than the Kentucky Commonwealth, …
Exploring Orchestration's Influence On Harmonic Analysis: A Conductor's Perspective, Tyron C. Barnes
Exploring Orchestration's Influence On Harmonic Analysis: A Conductor's Perspective, Tyron C. Barnes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite emphasizing training and conducting techniques and overall music interpretation, minimal research investigates how orchestration impacts harmonic analysis when studying music scores. Conducting textbooks often emphasize the ability to study a music score; however, they place minimal emphasis on how orchestration influences harmonic analysis. A research gap on the impact of orchestration on harmonic analysis presents potential for professional growth for aspiring and seasoned conductors. By investigating novel methodologies, conductors can enhance their comprehension of the intricate relationships between instrumental components and harmonic frameworks in wind band compositions. Examining the viewpoints of fifteen beginner and experienced band directors from public …

*Inclusive Language Reform In Catalonia And Valencia (*Some Exclusions May Apply), Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Romance languages have traditionally represented gender through binary markers (Papadopoulos, 2019; Rainer, 2020). More recently, they are shifting toward inclusive innovations, with some degree of popular support (Slemp, 2021), as well as resistance (Kosnick, 2021; Niklison, 2020). Following the recent linguistic innovation to move beyond binary markers in Spain, gender-inclusive discourse usually focuses on the Spanish language, with little research available on other languages in the country, such as Aranese, Basque, Catalan, Galician, and Valencian. This study examines Catalan and Valencian, spoken primarily in Catalonia and Valencia, respectively. Using twelve institutional documents published between 2005-2021, this analysis examines how public …

Intersectional Resistance: German Working-Class Adaptation To Nazi Control, Nyhan O’Sullivan
Intersectional Resistance: German Working-Class Adaptation To Nazi Control, Nyhan O’Sullivan
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Prior to the Nazi seizure of power, the working class in Germany held political power at the local and national level. Once the Nazi state obtained control, they took decisive action and dismantle workers institutions and control the working class. The working class was forced to adapt to these rapidly changing circumstances and push back against the Nazi state in ways dictated largely by the conditions in which workers found themselves. Workers with vastly different experiences, from forced laborers to enthusiastic fascist volunteers experiences the Nazi states contempt for workers and resisted. By examining this resistance and the effects it …

Burned In Berlin – Banned In Boston: Censorship Of Booksellers During The Interwar Period In The U. S. As Compared To Germany, 1919-1939, Aleksandra Jimerson-Mckinnies
Lawrence University Honors Projects
During the twenty-year interwar period from 1919-1939, two vastly different nations faced their own personal wars with the censorship of booksellers. Germany—at first the Weimar Republic, then later the Nazi Regime—underwent such a transformation that Berlin went from one of the literary capitals of the world to the site of the most infamous of censorship crimes: the book burnings. Meanwhile, the United States was a long-standing democratic nation in which freedom of speech was one of its cornerstone tenants. Despite the differences of governments and the scope and scale of the censorship, there were major similarities between the tactics and …
Desire, Disobedience, And Drag: My Lesbian Fangirling Of Emily Dickinson, Aaron Copland, And Alena Smith, Nina Schifano
Desire, Disobedience, And Drag: My Lesbian Fangirling Of Emily Dickinson, Aaron Copland, And Alena Smith, Nina Schifano
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Taking an interdisciplinary approach that sits at the intersection of musicology, literary studies, and queer studies, I undergo a queer reading of Emily Dickinson’s writings and subsequent interpretations of her works. I begin my analysis with a queering of genre, using archival evidence to consider the complex ways gendered genre norms affected how Dickinson wrote, how her works were edited and published, and how people have since read her. I then undertake a genre-queer reading of some of the writings that she sent to Susan Dickinson, her sister-in-law and lifelong love. I turn next to Aaron Copland’s 1950 setting for …
The Improvement Regime: Public Trusts, Real Estates, And India’S Urban Futurities, Anwesha Ghosh
The Improvement Regime: Public Trusts, Real Estates, And India’S Urban Futurities, Anwesha Ghosh
Articles
Over the last two decades, since scholarly writing on India witnessed an “urban turn,” numerous historians have analyzed the role of the improvement trust in the redevelopment of Indian cities in the twentieth century, most specifically those of Bombay, Calcutta, and Delhi. This paper revisits and reassesses some of their key arguments to suggest that rather than studying the “failures” of the individual trusts to foster sanitary built environments, we should pay attention to the contingent workings of the city trusts that were constitutively designed for such failures. Using a comparative analysis of the Bombay and Calcutta improvement trusts, this …
The New Right-Wing Populist: The Blonde “Mother Of The Nation”, Christina Charie
The New Right-Wing Populist: The Blonde “Mother Of The Nation”, Christina Charie
Political Science Undergraduate Theses
The rise of right-wing populism in European politics has come along side an increased presence of female representation in political affairs. What aesthetic decisions are being made by far-right female populist politicians? How do moderate right and left-wing women politicians differ in their presentation styles from populist women? While right-wing politics have gained traction in Europe before, this time women are the face of many right-wing populist movement, even though much of the ideology is rooted in misogyny and the presence of strong, masculine figureheads. With women taking center stage within these right-wing movements that are historically masculine, understanding their …
Unknown, Unnoticed, Unheard İlahiler: Turkish-Christian Hymnody As Liturgical Theology, Jeremy Perigo
Unknown, Unnoticed, Unheard İlahiler: Turkish-Christian Hymnody As Liturgical Theology, Jeremy Perigo
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
For the estimated 5–8,000 Turkish Evangelical Christians, challenges surrounding religious identity in this Muslim-majority context are particularly evident in corporate Christian worship, where indigenous local expressions of worship and matters of faith formation can, at times, create a sense of divided dual belonging. Questions of corporate identity go beyond the simple binary comparisons of Christian versus Muslim, Western versus indigenous, or local versus global, and include layers of influences and meanings. Using data collected during Spring 2019 of the congregational song repertoires of five diverse Turkish Protestant communities, we shall seek to examine the public meaning of liturgical texts (i.e., …
