Musicians are at an elevated risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) due to repeated exposure to sound levels exceeding occupational safety guidelines. Although many strides have been made in educating music students on the potential dangers of noise exposure and the mitigating effects of hearing protection devices, the current attitudes on this topic among high school and college-level student musicians remain largely unknown. Generally file formats on modern systems are single byte streams, and there are many tools available to help identify and determine what software is needed to make use of the format. When dealing with formats born on Macintosh systems, a single byte stream is often not all that is needed to make use of the formats. On older Macintosh systems a Type/Creator code and a resource fork are often needed, and on more modern systems there are other challenges that need to be addressed. The Lender Center for Social Justice

Syracuse Futures (SF) is a research initiative aimed at strengthening arts and humanities infrastructures in historically marginalized communities in Syracuse. Led by Syracuse University’s Engaged Humanities Network (EHN), SF partners with local organizations to provide mentorship, enrichment programming, and career support through an adaptive digital portfolio system. The project addresses inequities in arts and civic education, particularly in Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and immigrant communities, by integrating university resources with community-led initiatives. SF programs, including Creative Art Lab, Breedlove Readers, and Photography & Literacy (PAL), foster creative expression, leadership, and literacy. Sally Walton's Will: Reuniting The Andrews Families Of Western Maine And Beyond, Kathrine C. Aydelott

This article demonstrates how the 1871 probate file of Sally (Andrews) (Andrews) (Clark) Walton of Paris, Maine, resolves decades of genealogical confusion among Andrews families of western Maine. Analysis of her will, codicils, and probate accountings reconstructs a fragmented sibling group and definitively distinguishes two men named Perez Andrews whose identities had long been conflated. The evidence firmly links Darius Andrews of Sumner, Perez Andrews of Buckfield and Penobscot County, and several previously untraced Andrews siblings to a single parental family headed by Ebenezer Andrews Jr. and Sarah (Elliot) Andrews. This chapter explores how religious practices and identities intersect with the home as both a construct and physical locale and surveys the social science literature on religion in/and the home. We argue that the shifting space-times of religious practice reflect and influence the changeable and porous boundaries between public and private space, the home and beyond the home. This influence is shown by reference to three areas of focus: the home as a private space of and for religion; the use of religion to cross social and spatial boundaries of home; and the reconfiguration of the home in religious practice …

It is tempting to treat the United States’ ill-fated military intervention in Vietnam in the 1960s as the desperate final gasp of a moribund Western imperial system. Certainly, scholars have described Washington’s military debacle in Vietnam as the end of America’s “short-lived empire” in Southeast Asia, emblematic of the broader, decisive triumph of Southeast Asian nationalism over western colonialism. This reading of Southeast Asian countries attaining formal independence after 1945, with tacit assumptions that colonialism and nationalism exist in binary opposition, tends to ossify when the region’s history is viewed through the lens of U.S. defeat in Vietnam.

"Monographs on the visual culture of the Soviet period are infrequent enough that the appearance of two in one year is a cause for celebration. Chicago University Press has published long-awaited books on El Lissitzky (1890–1941) and Aleksandr Deineka (1899–1969), contemporaries who occupied very different spheres in the early Soviet art system and different niches within the historiography of Soviet art. Designer and architect Lissitzky was an acclaimed member of the international avant-garde, while the figurative painter and graphic artist Deineka is still relatively little known outside the context and cliches of Socialist Realism. Reimagining Musical Improvisation Through Poetic Inspiration: A Creative Practice Investigation, Sean Foran

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This presentation explores creative practice as research through an innovative approach to musical improvisation that challenges traditional boundaries between music and literature. Working with experienced improvising musicians, this study investigates how poetic texts serve as catalysts for new creative processes and musical outcomes.

The methodology involved musicians responding improvisationally to recorded poetry narrations, followed by reflective discussion and re-improvisation, extending Hannan's concept of 'comprovisation' while maintaining complete musical agency. Significantly, the final creative works present only the improvised music, requiring audiences to read poems independently and construct their own text-music relationships.

This approach differs from established music-poetry collaborations by positioning …

This policy primer provides an overview of Nevada’s transferable tax credit program for film and other productions and reviews articles, reports, audits, and studies of film tax credits as a tool for economic development in the United States. This review considers a significant body of work analyzing the use of film tax credits in support of economic development. Studies and state audits often show that because film tax credits do not create the number and quality of full-time jobs necessary to merit their costs and do little to stimulate other related industries, they are a poor financial choice for state …

Revisiting The 64th: Assessing And Updating A Historical Collection With New Technologies, Elizabeth H. Holt

Background: In November 1940, the LSU Medical Center organized the 64th US Army General Hospital to serve in the Mediterranean from 1943 to 1945. In the 1970s, members of the unit donated approximately 3000 items to a faculty member, who then donated that collection to the LSU Health Libraries; it comprises photographs, newsletters, Army reports, interviews, and correspondences. In 2011, the Libraries faculty & staff undertook digitizing and describing the collection. In 2025, given the advances made in technology since the original project, it was decided to reassess both the physical and digital versions of the collection.

The Stony Island Arts Bank (SIAB) in Southside Chicago was designed and founded as a piece of art itself, with the organizational structure being a museum of Black cultural production. This article examines how the institution constructs an epistemology of Blackness through its archival practices, community programming, and spatial claims on the South Side. Founded by artist Theaster Gates through the Rebuild Foundation, the SIAB positions institutional design as an art medium, operating in productive tension with orthodox museum methods.
