Benvenuto Rambaldi da Imola (c.1320–1388), an Italian scholar and lecturer based in Bologna, is chiefly remembered for his influential Latin Comentum super Dantis Aligherii comoediam [Commentary on Dante’s Alighieri’s Comedy] (1373–88). In his gloss on Dante’s placement of Mordred in Hell, Benvenuto borrows extensively from Boccaccio’s chapter on King Arthur (VIII.19) in De casibus virorum illustrium [On the Downfalls of Famous Men] (1360; 1373). Benvenuto adds additional content from the chronicle story of King Arthur that derives from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britanniae [History of the Kings of Britain] (c.1136). Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–75), born in Certaldo, Tuscany, is best remembered today as the Father of Italian Prose owing to the immense popularity of his Decameron (c.1349–51), a collection of one hundred short stories (written in Italian prose) that are embedded in a narrative frame of a storytelling game undertaken by seven young women and three young men who fled Florence for Friesole in hopes of escaping the Black Death. During the Renaissance (1400–1600), however, Boccaccio was best remembered for his De casibus virorum illustrium [On the Downfalls of Famous Men] (c.1360). …

At the Abbey of Saint Denis-en-France, the Benedictine monk and chronicler Guillaume de Nangis (d. 1300) wrote a Latin World Chronicle from Creation to AD 1300. The text contains an account of the reign of King Arthur of Britain that includes the celebrated Sword in the Stone Episode. This iconic scene was not traditionally part of the ‘historical’ account of King Arthur’s biography. The pseudo-historical Brut chronicle story of King Arthur, which originates with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britanniae [History of the Kings of Britain] (c. 1136), has Arthur, aged …

Culturally Specific Sound Design In American And Japanese Supernatural Horror Films, Delvinder Singh
Postgraduate
This creative practice-led research project investigates sound design with the aim of exploring whether cultural influences play a crucial role in shaping sound design choices in American and Japanese supernatural horror films.
This research has two parts, a written exegesis and a creative component in the form of a sound redesign of a film scene from each culture where the research findings were applied.
The scope of this research is based on a literature review and film analysis, in the form of four case studies, specifically focusing on the influence of culture on sound design. An in-depth review of the …

Geraldo is a story about what an immigrant undergoes when he leaves one culture and tries to 'join' another culture. An immigrant suffers a triple disruption: he loses his sense of place, he enters into an alien language, and he finds himself surrounded by beings whose social behavior, norms and traditions are very unlike, and sometimes even offensive to his own. The explanation of the leading ideas in this manual help students and teachers explore the philosophical themes in Geraldo. The discussion plans, exercises, and activities are designed to foster and cultivate the process of philosophical dialogue in the classroom. …
