Spa 111 - Elementary Spanish I, Pablo Moraga

This in-person course is designed to build a strong foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish while fostering cultural and intercultural competence. Guided by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, students will engage in basic spontaneous and rehearsed spoken and written communication on familiar topics, interpret multimodal texts related to everyday life, and express meaning in personally relevant contexts. The Flexi Disc, popular between the 1960s and 1990s, was an innovative product which brought decades of cheap music distribution to the homes of many Americans. Within the Plastic Artifacts Collection at Syracuse University are several flexi discs used as advertising, ranging from current musical artists to large food chains preserved in mailing envelopes from several decades of the 1900's. Observing these artifacts provided data and information to answer the question: how were flexi discs able to be manufactured at such low costs while maintaining a profitable market? Dolls of Our World is a geography game from around the 1950s in SCRC’s Plastics Artifacts Collection in which the player matches a doll to their flag based off outfit and short description. I wanted to know why Africa was not included, and overall, how geography games and teaching diversity have changed. I read several papers, including on plastic-color technology and the history of Black dolls. Jack Milgrom was a plastics researcher and consultant, publishing reports on the marketability of plastics, packaging, and recycling, several of which can be found in SU’s SCRC. Through Milgrom’s work, I ask how responsibility for plastic waste landed on the shoulders of consumers and not manufacturers during the peak of environmentalism. Milgrom’s reports offer a timeline as to how the plastics industry shifted its language and marketing methods to mirror the goals of environmentalism. By analyzing this shift against environmental writings of the time, which demonstrate an urgency to handle plastic waste, Milgrom reveals an awareness of what consumers want, …

Plastics emerged after World War II as a material associated with progress, cleanliness, and possibility. In medicine, plastic replaced fragile glass tools and enabled inexpensive, standardized production of devices such as syringes and medicine dispensers. Yet the rise of pediatrics concerned itself with the emotional needs of children raises questions about whether this flexible material was used to create more child-friendly forms of care. This project strengthens the Syracuse University Department of Drama’s ability to document its theatrical productions through high-quality digital photography. With support from the SOURCE grant, the department acquired updated photography equipment that enables students to capture clearer, more accurate images of performances. In 2025, Utah State held an exhibition celebrating 50 years of Undergraduate Research (UR) . As a freshman art history major, I was the lead student curator in charge of the exhibition. The overall story I wanted to highlight was how research is much more than STEM projects, and students across majors can conduct research on subjects they are passionate about.

A Free Black Farming Community In White Clay Creek Hundred, James Jones

History Faculty Publications

Although Delaware remained a slave state until the end of the Civil War, free Blacks were able to acquire land before that.  A small group settled along Delaware’s northern border with Chester County, even though Pennsylvania offered greater legal protection against enslavement.  This article describes what is known about the four families that settled along Hopkins Road in White Clay Creek Hundred, and the factors that affected their decision to remain in Delaware.

Exploring Two Approaches Towards Gender Inclusive Language In The Philippines, Eduardo Victor J. Valdez

In this paper, we shall take a look at the role of the Philippine government in encouraging the use of gender-neutral Philippine-English. We shall also glimpse at Philippine gayspeak as a player in the development of the Filipino language game. We endeavor to learn if a top to bottom program for language inclusivity from the government down to the citizenry is effective in promoting inclusivity in Philippine-English. On the other hand, a minority to majority development was the route that Philippine gayspeak took in adding their form of life into the gender-neutral Filipino language.

As psychologists and students of psychology make sense of and respond to the good and bad within human behavior and its study, theological tools benefit their discernment. This paper presents two Neocalvinist theological concepts — common grace and antithesis — as tools for psychologists. These concepts help psychologists recognize God’s common gifts to humanity while also identifying what must be corrected. Such applications benefit psychologists in clinical cases and as they consider theoretical frameworks. When used together, these tools encourage us to anticipate both the true, good, and beautiful things in the world and the need at times for redirection. …

The second week of Olympic competition began with the Pairs and the Women’s Figure Skating Events. In the past, these two events were the most anticipated events in the Winter Olympics. In recent years, the Pairs Event seems to have lost some of its luster, at least for me. It may have been eclipsed by Ice Dancing in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. In their free skate that year, Cristopher Dean and Jayne Torvill ice danced to Ravel’s Bolero and received a perfect score for artistic expression.
