Since 2015, the Trasimeno Regional Archaeological Project (TRAP) has been conducting research in the territory of Castiglione del Lago (PG). Born from the collaboration between Italian and American researchers, together with the Municipality of Castiglione del Lago, the project intends to bring to light the archaeological heritage of the area, in particular from the Roman era, and make it accessible to the public. The research has three components: the development of a historical GIS of the territory, the excavation of selected sites and the establishment of a new archaeological museum in Castiglione del Lago. The work presents a preliminary set …

It scrutinizes the consequences of profit-driven technological progress, particularly in VR, brain-computer interfaces, and AI hallucinations. Critiquing the dominance of industry leaders in AI safety discussions, the paper advocates a balanced, inclusive approach.

Philosophical perspectives on AI and VR prompt questions about their impact on human experience. The paper proposes an educational shift to cultivate human attributes alongside technological skills. Examining AI hallucinations and gaming glitches, it raises concerns about the potential blurring of reality and virtuality.

Connecting technological advancements with environmental challenges, the paper …

The Relationship Between Social Network Typology, L2 Proficiency Growth, And Curriculum Design In University Study Abroad, Tripp Strawbridge

Modern Languages & Literature

This study utilizes social network analysis to characterize a typology of study abroad sojourner experience, detailing the relationship of social experience types to second language (L2) proficiency growth and study abroad program design. In contrast with previous research, the study performs a quantitative analysis of structural and compositional network features to identify a typology of social networks. Participants were 30 L2 Spanish learners from five US-based semester-long university study abroad programs in Spain. Social network data were collected using a social network questionnaire, while L2 development was measured through an elicited imitation task. Results identify four prominent social network patterns, …

Boundary Setting Program, Alyssa Gehrke Dec 2023

Boundary Setting Program, Alyssa Gehrke

Goal 2: Life Skills Narrative

It is difficult for anybody, but especially teens and young adults, to understand what their boundaries are and to know how to communicate them with others. This impacts this age group (teens and young adults) most specifically because when we are young, we are both implicitly and explicitly told to mold and change our wants and needs to make others feel more comfortable. So, when living away from home for the first time and living with and being surrounded by new people who they are just getting to know it can be natural for them to want to continue molding …

Une Histoire Pragmatique Du Politique, William J. Novak, Stephen W. Sawyer

Articles

Apples And Oranges, Daragh Henchy Dec 2023

Apples And Oranges, Daragh Henchy

Postgraduate

This exegesis delves into the complex relationship between cinema and art, focusing on the development of story documents within the cinematic arts. Positioned within the realm of practice-led research, it is an academic companion to a creative work—a fantasy murder mystery augmented treatment set in Paris, 1914. The exegesis and the creative work collectively aim to describe an aesthetic experience akin to that of fine art, drawing upon Gilles Deleuze’s taxonomy of cinema, specifically the concepts of movement-image and time-image.

. Central to this study is the exploration of how cinema, as a form of art, engages with philosophical ideas …

Attitudes Of Experiential Designers Across Design Disciplines, Danielle Degarmo Dec 2023

Attitudes Of Experiential Designers Across Design Disciplines, Danielle Degarmo

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The expanded use of the term scenography is widening its understanding of the word to encompass many experiential design disciplines beyond its origin in theatre. At its essence, scenography is the culmination of a designer’s collaborative efforts to take a prompt, whether it be a client program, a script, or other, and produce a holistic assemblage of experiential design elements to spatially engage an end user. Many experts in across design fields have acknowledged that there is disciplinary cross over among those practicing in experiential design fields in terms of design output or intention. By means of designer surveys and …

Vozick Hans, Alexandra, Sophia Maier Garcia Dec 2023

Vozick Hans, Alexandra, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Alexandra Vozick Hans was born to Canadian parents, who, upon moving to New York, lived in the Amalgamated Housing Cooperative, where she grew up. She remained in the Bronx until she graduated college in 1966. After college, she moved to Boston and became a social worker.

Hans and her family were socialists, and Hans recalls tensions between the socialists and the communists in the Amalgamated. She also recalls tensions over the issue of integration in the building: the Amalgamated was not integrated, and residents complained about the lack of integration. Overall, however, Hans looks back with great fondness on the …

Mark Twain On The Soviet Silver Screen: Stalinist Laughter And Anti-Racism In Tom Soier, Cassio De Oliveira Dec 2023

Mark Twain On The Soviet Silver Screen: Stalinist Laughter And Anti-Racism In Tom Soier, Cassio De Oliveira

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is an analysis of the Soviet film Tom Soier, an adaptation of Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn released in 1936, at the height of the Stalinist period. In the article, the author places the film in the context of the Soviet support of the Black struggle against racial segregation in America by showing how Tom Soier creatively combines the plots of Twain’s novels in order to propagate an antiracist message. Furthermore, by casting African American actors in the roles of Black enslaved characters, the film also engages with what Steven Lee has called the ethnic …

Unraveling The Tapestry Of Indigenous Maize In North America: A Case Study Of Pawnee Ancestral Maize, Kahheetah Barnoskie Dec 2023

Studies on Indigenous ancestral landrace maize in North America has significant historical and scientific importance. Indigenous peoples, such as the Pawnee people, have been cultivating maize for thousands of years, resulting in diverse varieties adapted to their local environments. This study aims to deepen the knowledge of Indigenous maize by examining specific varieties from the Pawnee, including a comparative analysis of the genetic makeup through DNA sequencing. This study used Genotyping by Target Sequencing (GBTS) method to examine the genetic variation and characteristics among the multiple varieties the Pawnee people once grew historically, providing valuable information about the evolutionary history …

“Do It Again”: Chart-Topping Worship Songs And The Churches Behind Them, Adam Perez, Shannan Baker, Elias Dummer, Marc Jolicoeurd, Mike Tapper Dec 2023

“Do It Again”: Chart-Topping Worship Songs And The Churches Behind Them, Adam Perez, Shannan Baker, Elias Dummer, Marc Jolicoeurd, Mike Tapper

Funded Scholarship

Since the introduction and expansion of the internet, the number of songs available to worship leaders has grown exponentially. Though the “industry” as such was nascent in the 1970s, there existed already a few popular performing groups and non-church entities that functioned as primary sources and conduits for new songs such as the Scripture in Song series (by Dave and Dale Garrett), the Maranatha! Praise albums, and by the mid-1980s, Integrity’s Hosanna! Music tape series. In fact, several regional and para-church-type organizations were founded in the 1970s and 1980s to help collect and codify a core repertory of new songs …

Imperfect Church, Perfect God, Claire N. Barr Dec 2023

Imperfect Church, Perfect God, Claire N. Barr

Honors Projects

Jesus’ death on the cross demonstrates the most radical act of love. So when the church, which is biblically supposed to reflect Jesus’ love, causes pain and disagreements, there is no doubt as to why people choose to leave, completely stay away from the church, or lose their faith altogether. Despite this, the solution remains in Jesus. Through His ministry represented in scripture, one can see the way in which the church is called to care for the world. Despite this, the church has come short of Jesus’ example, often skewing people’s perspective on Christ. When on Earth, Jesus defied …

“Coming-Of-Age” In South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, And Kimberly Akimbo, Sabrina Shah Dec 2023

“Coming-Of-Age” In South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, And Kimberly Akimbo, Sabrina Shah

Honors College Theses

This paper discusses the ways in which the theme of “coming-of-age” is explored in South Pacific, The Sound of Music, and Kimberly Akimbo. I use the term “coming-of-age” because that is the colloquial phrase for stories about maturation, however this term can include any transition from an innocent mindset to an enlightened one. This change often results from encountering harsh realities of the real world and learning to accept them. Although the transformation often happens in tandem with growing older, it is the process of experiencing the world which catalyzes it. Growing older can mean challenging your beliefs, exploring where …

Minority Reports: Registering Dissent In Science, Haixin Dang Dec 2023

Minority Reports: Registering Dissent In Science, Haixin Dang

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Consensus reporting is valuable for presenting unified scientific evidence to the public. When a consensus does not exist, I argue that scientists ought not to default to majority reporting in its place. Majority reporting has several epistemic drawbacks because it can obscure underlying justifications and lines of evidence, which may be in conflict or contested. I argue that minority reporting, in conjunction with majority reporting, is an epistemically superior mechanism for scientists to report on the full range of reasons and evidence available within a group. This paper addresses several objections, including worries over group cohesion, fringe reporting, and elite …

Black Digital Spaces: Theorizing Resistance In The Wake Of Racist Technology, Shannan Moore Dec 2023

Black Digital Spaces: Theorizing Resistance In The Wake Of Racist Technology, Shannan Moore

Graduate Student Research Fellowship

In the wake of major technological advancement, social media has increasingly become a communal space of daily congregation, particularly for Black people. This paper specifically explores how the Black Diaspora navigates these spaces at a complex intersection of social media and transnational Black histories. I draw from critical Internet studies, Black Diaspora studies, Black feminisms, and media studies to investigate how new technology allows Black folk to engage in conversations about our identity, community, and resistance. Employing a critical ethnographic approach, this paper analyzes online discourse within the Black community about Marvel's Black Panther (2018). This analysis emphasizes the parallels …
